Dude, if you have all the numbers anyhow, you should make this a weekly thing and just post all numbers for the time, and not a daily thing :|

I haven't tried e-mailing the dude yet because I have exams. Once they're done, I'll send off a nice e-mail for pre-1994 numbers :)

Oh cool! Have you looked over his PDF paper yet? If he doesn't respond I'll get ioi to e-mail him. And if he continues to ignores us...I'll have every member of GAF e-mail him until he does!

Not yet, just very breifly. I've got an exam on Computer Architecture coming up - which is NOT easy. And I just had one for Programming Techniques. Then a 21st then work. Next week I'll get on it :p

Yes, keep it up Square2005 you are doing a fantastic job!!

It's a hello and welcome to Zelda: LTTP!

The issue with how often to post charts- as I said in my pm why not do it weekly but put say 3 months worth in the thread, that way we're not getting a new thread daily but as CVX and others have said I wanna find out about DKC, Yoshi's Island etc, the N64 games, MK 64, Goldeneye and I don't wanna be waiting a year to find out really !!!

Thanks a lot for the top 40s though, if nobody else appreciates them then I certainly do :D

Did you give the bundle breakdowns for Jun / Jul?

I am reminded of what life was like when I didn't know how many copies of XXX was selling each month. But then again, I wasn't attached to the Internet 24-7 either...

BTW, POOR Streets of Rage 3. No wonder you don't have a sequel.

I blame all of you for this travesty of gaming.

Wow. From January to Frebruary the 3D0 dropped over $200 in price? That's not a good sign.

Yet people expect PS3 to do this sometime next year...

I really can't believe how soundly the Genesis was beating the SNES.

I'm amazed as well...makes Sega's decline from the top of the food chain all the more incredible really. But it can happen, which is why people who handed Sony the next generation crown a year ago were always a little premature in my view (if not for being #1, then in completely dominating like the current generation).

The numbers for the second half of '94 and the first half of '95 would be really interesting to look at...I assume there was a pretty significant shift during that period.

Also a shame portable numbers aren't included...I always felt Game Gear did better than most people thought.

yeah damn fraking tease now posting like once a week / month??

:lol

Post once a week, but post a few months worth at a time.

So maybe do the rest of 94 this week or whatever, then maybe do 4 months at a time.

Especially in quiet months such as these- The only new releases between April and July have been Super SF II, the rest of the games have just seen a steady decline and slight jostle for position- can you see how easy it is to predict sales trends to those people who don't like what is done on E&N?

Awesome!! Thanks Square2005! I wonder if you can tell us what the best selling 3DO and Jaguar games were, I'm surprised they never made the top 40. Seems like 3DO did better in Japan than in the US!!

I can agree with that. 2-4 months at a time per thread would make for some interesting conversation. Up to you though, Square2005. :)

I say, 3 months at a time, once a week.

Anyway, I was under the impression that the Genesis always undercut the SNES in price, since it came out so much earlier. I guess they abandoned that strategy when it became clear that they were pwning Nintendo?

I don't have SW sales for 3DO and Jaguar. Yes, I believe 3DO sold more in Japan (600k shipped).

Since Q4 (calendar year) is the biggest quarter, I say draw that one out to give us more time to discuss. If all of Q4 comes out at once, there's no roller-coaster surprise going from November's numbers to December's numbers. :(

Q1 - 1 week
Q2 - 1 week
Q3 - 1 week
Q4 - 3 weeks (1 month/week)

Also since Q4's numbers are usually almost an order of magnitude larger than the other months, can we have more than the top 40 for those months? Maybe top 100? If you're only doing one month per week for October - December, you'll have more time to get that listing together. :)

It's nice to see that Zelda:LttP is still selling 2+ years after the fact. Getting the 26-40 numbers definitely helps for games that came out a while back. :)

I'm thinking about posting two months per thread until Christmas, where I'll post November and December separately. If I do that I'll post August '94 in this thread then next week I'll post September/October. Followed by November two weeks from now and December three weeks away. Then go back to two months per thread.

Also you guys need to realize how much slower games sold back then. Few games had very much anticipation so most titles started slowly in their first month but picked up the next month or so. So when you see what Super Metroid or Stunt Racer, etc. did (what you believe is poor or a bomb) in it's first month doesn't mean it bombed... you must take into consideration the following months. Like Super Metroid, which did 56k in it's opening month (which may seem like a bomb today but was a success back then) but will go on to sell 600k! I know today if a title sells 56k initially it most-likely won't reach near 600k but games had longer legs back then. People bought games whenever they happened to be at a store not when a new title was released.

Metroid sold 600k? That's very interesting as I only have it at 470k shipped :-S

Games did sell slower and had much longer legs back then- in the US as well as Japan.

I still think 2 months per week may be a little slow going (it'll take two months to get through a year, or a year to get to 2000) but it depends on what everyone wants I guess!

It is interesting to see that even in 1994 Nintendo's games sold well in the long term. What I didn't know is that Genesis sold so well in USA. It would be interesting to see the difference with Japan.

vs. weekly average (just Genesis vs. SNES shown)

SNES_GEN_1-94_7-94.png

By monthly totals, you'd have thought that Genesis went up in March and had a big downturn in April. By weekly totals, you can see that Genesis' downturn in April was actually a continuation of its downturn from February to March.

The varying weeks in NPD is why, to get a truer comparison, I like to break it down to weekly average. :)

Super NES continues to barely stay ahead of Genny thanks to more HW bundles and Metroid, Ken Griffey, SSFII, etc. But Sega's planning to make a comeback and steal Christmas for the fourth year in a row w/ Sonic & Knuckles and more EA Sports. We'll see...

Plus the Super Metroid/SNES bundle: 18,000 = 618,000

ioi, where'd you get your shipment totals?

Well I'll be totally honest for Metroid it is a little crude in that I took the Japanese total from the World total and then just split the US / Others data by the same ratio as the overall software (about 3:1). The game obviously sold very little in Europe then.

SNK Neo*Geo - 4

What i wish these threads would be like is how the old NPD threads with bunkum and Amused_to_Death were, they posted every single software number they had, even if sales were in the few hundreds. That way people could collect YTD and LTD with ease, but i like the fact we are getting any numbers at all so im not really going to complain.

Thanks again!

You call that sound beating? Considering the SNES still pulled away with the victory, I'd beg to differ.

It was a similar situation to today in some ways- Nintendo games sell on the SNES and other games sell about 50% (a lot more today) better on the other system(s).

NBA, Mortal Kombat etc sold better on GEN, but Sega's own games weren't doing as well as Nintendo's.

Yep, that's one area where Nintendo's strength is also their weakness. Their games sell great, but it effects the performance of every other developer, mostly negatively.

I'm GLAD though that the Genesis Aladdin beats out the SNES one, the SNES game was just sooo much weaker, I thought... but Mortal Kombat? :eek:

I guess the lack of real blood (I admit, "sweat" sucks) did affect sales, but otherwise, the SNES version wins easily in quality.

Looking for the next big thing in fighting games? Then check out all the behind-the-scenes action in the making of this upcoming new game from Electronic Arts.
Get it? "Big thing" :lol

Pak Watch
* Donkey Kong Country

You may recognize the name, but the game will astound you just as it did us and everyone else who has seen, heard and played it. Nintendo's Donkey Kong Country for the Super NES launches a new era of super programming that will feature games far in advance of anything you've ever seen on any video game system, and it accomplishes all this on your Super NES. Sure, it sounds like so much hype...that is until you check it out for yourself. Out of more than a thousand games this Pak Watcher has seen over the years, this 800 pound, 32 Megabit ape out-powers them all. Some people were talking about the decline of 16-bit game systems, but DK Country corked that pretty fast. The 3-D graphics and animation in this Super Mario World-sized action game are so good that it puts to shame the other high-end video game systems.
* Mortal Kombat II
* Super Punch-Out!!
* Earthworm Jim

How big is Donkey Kong Country? Too big for Sega. They didn't dare show themselves at all. And 3D0 and Jaguar cowered in the shadowy corners. Enough said, for now.

Previous Months

June 1994 Nintendo Power
May 1994 Nintendo Power
April 1994 Nintendo Power
March 1994 Nintendo Power

Thanks again, Donny; but are you prepared to post two months this weekend in the Sept/Oct thread?
Does anyone have any other gaming mags they can share (EGM, GamePro, etc.) so we can also see what's happening in the non-Nintendo world?
