What is it?

face_brixham.jpg
The portable sequel to the Best Strategy RPG of All Time. It's on PSP.

face_cosette_sullen.jpg
When can I get it?

face_brixham_surprise.jpg

US: August 31, 2010
EU: September 3, 2010
AUS: September 2, 2010
JPN: You already got it fools! (January 27, 2010)

face_zeri_shout.jpg
Where can I get it?

face_brixham_shout.jpg
Valkyria Chronicles II will be available for download on Playstation Network (PSN) and on UMD at you neighborhood video game store!

face_avan.jpg
When does it take place?

face_brixham_surprise.jpg
The story takes place two years after the end of Valkyria Chronicles (1937 EC).

face_cosette_angry.jpg
Do I need to play the previous game first?

face_brixham.jpg
This is where I’m supposed to say, “No, you’ll be fine!” but instead I’m going to say, Jann will come to your house if you don’t buy three copies of the first game.
Seriously though, you can play this without having played the previous game, but there will obviously be character relationships and events that are less meaningful to you. In addition, from the start, this game contains a fairly significant spoiler for VC1.

face_juliana_surprise.jpg
What's the situation?

face_brixham_shout.jpg
Civil war has broken out in Gallia due to the country being under the rule of Darcsens. A rebel group backed by aristocrats called the Gallian Revolutionary Army has set forth to cleanse the leadership. The Gallian Army, exhausted from the war in the previous game is unable to stop the insurrection. It’s up to the students of Gallia’s Lanseal Military Academy to put down the rebellion and save the nation!

face_licorice_sullen.jpg
Where are all my homies from Squad 7?

face_brixham.jpg
Alicia’s probably baking bread somewhere, and Welkin is probably chasing bugs. Other cast members may or may not make cameos. A relative of a certain super popular Shocktrooper has joined the cast.

face_cosette_sigh.jpg
So what's new?

face_brixham_surprise.jpg
Your favorite RPG has been downsized for the Playstation Portable handheld gaming system!
  • Retains the fantastic turn-based, realtime strategy RPG gameplay from its predecessor.
  • Classes have been totally revamped! Evolve your Scouts into Shocktroopers or Snipers! Engineers into Medics or buff your squad with your musical talents! It’s all up to you. 35 classes in all!
  • Over 200 missions!
  • Melee weapons! Wear a big fat shield and slap a dude in the face with a hammer.
  • Maps have multiple fronts. Choose your path to victory!
  • Multiplayer! Co-op and competitive multiplayer over local wireless or adHoc Party!

face_gilbert_surprise.jpg
But how does it look?

face_brixham.jpg
See for yourself:

As promised, another sticker is going out that should make a lot of other SEGA fans happy – myself included. Remember the blue rogues symbol that you can get in-game fairly early on? We’re happy to reveal that we’ve added a second Skies of Arcadia sticker to Valkyria Chronicles II, and this one is exclusive to the west!

Two more DLC missions are also revealed, and like the previous ones, they will all be included in a single DLC package.

You can only comment once, and you have until 11:00 PM Pacific time tonight to hit 100 comments. Spread the word and work together, and let’s see how fast you guys can accomplish it! (P.S.: A rank = within 2 hours of this blog going live.)

Special Edition (9/10): Part I

SEGA said:
We’re happy to announce that Valkyria’s first week in stores was a good one, with fans all across the US picking up the game both physically and digitally. The game is also now available in the UK, so for all of you who spend with pounds instead of dollars, get out there and grab a copy!

We’d like to thank everyone who did their part, and likewise to urge those who haven’t picked it up yet to do so – the first battle went very well, but the war is far from over. Every copy picked up helps us prove that Valkyria Chronicles is a series that deserves even more attention here in the west, and it’s a cause that many of us here are happy to fight for.

4977005087_2658dd021f.jpg

We’ve mentioned in the past that there was DLC planned here in the west, but today we’re happy to specify that DLC will actually be arriving this month! All of it will be coming together in one huge pack, and we’ll have details on how many missions that pack will give you, as well as the cost next week...

Finale (8/31 - LAUNCH DAY!): Succeeded Wish

SEGA said:
[The VC Developers] found time amidst their busy schedule to write something very special for all of you. And not just one – but a great many of them, each responsible for something unique within the series, all took time out of their day to create the following messages, just for the Valkyria Chronicles fans in the west. And here they are:

Day 10 (8/31): The Grounds of Lanseal

SEGA said:
Standing tall for 217 years, the Lanseal Royal Military Academy is also Gallia’s only military academy. The “Royal” part of the name comes from the time it was created: back when Gallia was actually still a Monarchy. Records of the academy’s location show that it was not in fact built from scratch, but rather constructed around an existing old citadel, and then adding new expansions like the training grounds and the residential buildings.

4930718635_b9da0590eb.jpg

What’s on the campus itself? We’ll start today with the Training Grounds – a very important place for any Squad Leader, and a crucial location to making sure troops are ready for the next battle....

Today's Giveaways:
Japan-only VC1 pre-order bonus Alicia figure. Head to the Blog to enter.

Day 9 (8/26): The Lay of the Land

SEGA said:
As a certain member of Squad 7 knew well, winning a battle is about far more than simply charging in headfirst. The land itself – from trees to ruins to rivers – can all be used to turn the tide of a fight. Like the first game, the conditions you’re up against will affect not only you, but your enemies as well – meaning that the first to take advantage of the situation can gain a critical upper hand.

4930436675_dec6030137.jpg

[A]lmost every single area in the game has different effects at night as opposed to during the day. The first key is to learn these, to prepare your squad and your tank accordingly, and then to plan a strategy around it....

Today's Giveaways:

A full set of (normally) PAX-exclusive VCII collector's buttons. Visit the Blog, Facebook, and Twitter to win a set.

Day 8 (8/25): Azure Flames

SEGA said:
If there was one mission that everyone had trouble with in the original Valkyria Chronicles, it was Chapter 7. Just when you finally think you’ve finally taken down that monster of a behemoth that Maximilian calls a Tank, in comes Selvaria, blue flames aglow, and lance at the ready.

fv8rhe.jpg

Valkyria Chronicles II introduces a new heir to the flame, and her name is Aliasse. Unlike most Valkyria spoken of in legend, she bears a shield and a whip instead of a shield and a lance...

Link: http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/08/25/valkyria-chronicles-ii-community-blitz-day-viii-azure-flames/

The blog today also hosts a new VC2 Story Trailer! Catch it on Youtube here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=oapYso4bkKs.

Today's Giveaway: A Selvaria trading figure on the Blog, signed VC1 copies on Twitter and Facebook.

Day 7 (8/24): Familiar Faces

WARNING: Today's blog post has significant Valkyria Chronicles 1 spoilers. However, some of this is information that is recapped very early in Valkyria Chronicles 2 as it is central to the plot.

SEGA said:
...[M]any of the characters that we grew attached to in Valkyria Chronicles hold a special place in our gaming hearts. For all of you, Valkyria Chronicles 2 includes a number of unexpected moments that will make you smile. Some characters will get references in text or newspaper articles, while some might actually just visit the Lanseal campus.

4924785757_e732283e9c.jpg

As Lanseal is a large academy with many cadets and a life of its own, the store there becomes a common visiting place...

Today's Giveaways: VC1 Pre-order art booklet for posting on the blog (read the instructions at the bottom). Twitter and Facebook giveaways also going on as usual.

Day 6 (8/23): Tank!

SEGA said:
Just as there’s nothing quite as scary as sending in a defenseless scout up against the gatling of an armored tank, there’s also little as rewarding as seeing the massive KA-BOOM and the ensuing fireworks show when your Lancer nails the radiator like a bullseye.

4922046308_e9f79764f8.jpg

In Valkyria Chronicles II, a lot of work was put into expanding the options and the freedom players had with their tanks...

Link: http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/08/23/valkyria-chronicles-ii-community-blitz-day-vi-tank/

Today's Giveaway: Blog, Twitter, and Facebook for figurines and DLC codes.

Day 5 (8/20): Meet the Rebels

WARNING: Today's blog post has significant Valkyria Chronicles 1 spoilers. However, this is information that is recapped very early in Valkyria Chronicles 2 as it is central to the plot. If you want to play VC1 unspoiled, DO NOT read today's blog post.

SEGA said:
One of the things I appreciated most about the first game was that the antagonists were human. I say that meaning that, for once in an RPG, the people you were up against were actually that – people. They were not some profound darkness that had existed for all of time, nor the ultimate evil that had come from space to wreak havoc.

4911351847_9cf16b496d.jpg

They were characters who simply wanted to achieve their own goals....In Valkyria Chronicles II, a similar level of mature storytelling is at play....

Day 4 (8/19): Level Up!

SEGA said:
For today’s purposes, we’re going to be using Avan as an example and reference. Everyone please say “Hi, Avan.”
4909113462_8cc79df2ac.jpg

Class said:
Hi, Avan.

Awesome. Now that introductions are out the way, take another look at Avan and you’ll notice that he’s set up with his standard Gallian-1 scout rifle. Snazzy.

Avan is a special exception in VCII, because you can choose to make him any class you want. He starts off as a scout, but if you feel like changing him to, say – a shocktrooper – you can do that, too. In which case he’ll look a little something like this...

Link: http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/08/19/valkyria-chronicles-ii-community-blitz-day-iv-level-up/

Today's Giveaway:
RIGHT HERE IN GAF TONIGHT will be some VC1 DLC codes.
On Facebook, an Edy figurine.
On Twitter tomorrow at 2PM PDT, VC1 DLC codes and an Alicia figurine

Day 3 (8/18): Battlefields of Blue and Red

SEGA said:
4899011047_1f95950703.jpg

To start off with, the battle system in Valkyria Chronicles II is very much like the battle system in the first game – and that’s great news for everyone who loved the chess-rpg-fps-strategy hybrid that the series is at heart. You’ll start off with a top down view, then fly down to the action firsthand when you select a character to control. Most of you probably know the ropes of the original – so what are the changes?...

Link: http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/08/1...ty-blitz-day-iii-battlefields-of-blue-and-red

Today's Giveaway:
Today they're giving away some of the Valkyria Chronicles 1 pre-order art books!

To enter: Comment about VC2's battle system on today's blog entry, tweet about Valkyria Chronicles (2?) on Twitter tonight to @ValkyriaTribune, and ask a question about the battle system on the Valkyria Chronicles Facebook page's wall post.

Day 2 (8/17): The Characters

SEGA said:
mmx4cp.jpg

I know exactly what a lot of you probably thought when you first saw the game, because it’s exactly what I was thinking:

Valkyria Fans said:
“Oh – the game is at an academy? Does this mean the epic war stories are being replaced with school life? And will the deep characters from the first game be shallow kids this time around?”

The answer, after investing many hours into the game, is a solid and resounding: Worry not....

Link: http://blogs.sega.com/usa/2010/08/17/valkyria-chronicles-ii-community-blitz-day-ii-the-characters/

Today's Giveaway:
Keep an eye on Twitter and Facebook for Valkyria Chronicles trading figures. The blog already had commenters answer the question:
What is the name of the new class type in Valkyria Chronicles II? (Hint: this class is a mix of melee combat and landmine/cover support.)

Day 1 (8/16): New Canvas

SEGA said:
jq0uuw.jpg

As the BLiTZ begins, we start today with a look at a key element of any RPG: the story.

When it comes to RPGs, a good story can often make or break the entire picture. It is the sketch lines that everything else must adhere to – and even the most vibrant of colors are only a blurred mess without it....

Confused; how does buying a PSP game convince Sega to put VC3 back on PS3? Wouldn't that send exactly the opposite message?

My thoughts exactly...but SEGA says sales of VC2 affect both future potential sequels and its chance of appearing on consoles again. (Paraphrasing RubyEclipse "If you want to see VC back on consoles, buy VC2.")

People should just buy it. I wanna see a VCIII, don't care about the platform it's on :D
Btw, great OP, and a must-buy, of course.

I will purchase this game on the first day of its release.
Provided that it works on CFW

Super hyped for this. Sequel to the best RPG this gen fuck yeh

Sega wants you to buy a Sega game, news at 11.

To be clear I'm not dumping on this game at all or anything, just confused by that tagline in the thread title.

Awesome OP.

Just FYI for UK they have split the two maps to two retailers. Zavvi and Game.

Zavvi = Vs. Class F
Game = Vs. Class E

I'm really looking forward to playing this.

I'm pretty sure a Sega rep would say "*******************, buy VC2."

That said, I've had it pre-ordered for months.

LATIN, MATRIPEDICABUS, DO YOU SPEAK IT
From reviews and impressions on the import, I don't think I'll dig the new setting, characters, or story. While I loved the original, I'm afraid this'll be a pass. :/

If you want mahjong in Yakuza 4, buy VC2.

Yeah, that works. :lol

Freaking Sega. People buying VC on consoles should have told them they want VC2 on consoles. They went for the quick money grab. The whole idea of buying VC2 to get VC3 on consoles irritates me.

Whenever I get my hands on a PSP, I'll get this game.

Lindsay

Dot Hacked
My interest in this game was always low but I've always been leaning towards buying but not Day 1 and only begrudgingly at $40 which is an awful price for any handheld game. I'll prolly need a guide to get me through this one as I did the first anyway so its just as well that I put off buying it so someone can whip up a good one.

BUY IT - So SEGA Will Put VC3 Back On Consoles

BUY YAKUZA 3 AND MAYBE THEY WILL PATCH IN ALL THE STUFF THEY REMOVED.
BUY VALKYRIA CHRONICLES DLC AND MAYBE THEY WILL PATCH IN TROPHIES.
BUY SONIC THE HEDGEHOG 4 EPISODE 1 AND MAYBE EPISODE 2 AND ON WILL BE BETTER.

Am I right?

I'm really looking forward to playing it eventually. I was really late to the first game, and only finished it a few weeks ago, but it quickly became one of my favorite (if not my favorite) SRPGs. I just need a little time between that one and the sequel.

Have VC1
Have a PSP
Haven't played VC1 (okay I played maybe up to getting the first free mission)

Yeah sorry will have to pass for now. It will be bought eventually though if I ever get around to finishing VC1.

Eh at the banner, and pretty annoying tagline. Aside from that good OP.

Fortunately I'm buying the game to enjoy it, rather than fuel potential for a 3rd title that hasn't been announced officially. Got the UMD preordered already.

I'd like to be there day 1 but I still have about half of VC1 to complete as well as some PSP backlog like Peace Walker and P3P.

I'll buy it so they put it back on handheld and piss off all the nuts looking for exclusive wars moreso than content. :p

Looking forward to scout rushes and using 1/10th of my team! I hope they eventually inject some s into this srpg. The mechanics are so good and it's so fun, I just wish it'd make me think a little

I'm really looking forward to playing it eventually. I was really late to the first game, and only finished it a few weeks ago, but it quickly became one of my favorite (if not my favorite) SRPGs. I just need a little time between that one and the sequel.

I literally played a map or two of the first one before putting it down... Should probably give it a better chance...

I'll buy it for both reasons. =D You don't like my banner? :(

My thoughts exactly...but SEGA says sales of VC2 affect both future potential sequels and its chance of appearing on consoles again. (Paraphrasing RubyEclipse "If you want to see VC back on consoles, buy VC2.")
RubyEclipse was also the one who said Sonic 4 was a return to classic momentum based gameplay before the gameplay videos leaked out :lol Sega just want people to buy the game and they'll say anything to get them to do it.

As it is I'm less concerned about the platform than I am about them turning half the game into a yet another school sim and breaking all the maps into little pieces. So, pass.

The 3 main characters seem a bit generic and annoying but I'll give the game a shot. I loved the first one, it's a shame I also know some people who didn't buy it just because IT DIDN'T HAVE ANY EFFING TROPHIES...

Oh yeah because that's the only reason anyone could have for wanting it on the HD consoles. Bigger battlefields, a return to the original watercolour artstyle, nicer graphics, fully and induvidually voiced characters, dialogue in briefings, fully rendered and motion captured, non prerendered cutscenes and a return to CGI cutscenes instead of anime cutscenes. All these things are the reasons people want it back on consoles, not just for pathetic list wars.

I'll buy one so they can make another game on PSP or another portable.

Then I'll buy another one second hand for 10 bucks a month later so I can finally have an excuse to play it.

Haven't looked much into the game, but has there been any big changes? I found the first game pretty meh, but I thought I would at least ask to see if there was anything in this one that might make me change my mind.
