Bioware bans SW:TOR player over internet meme

Don't knock it, without your tag I'd have never realised it was still you after your name change. Which was doubly awesome, because you changed your name to the title of my favourite Jarmusch film.

Oh, please. Everyone's written something people don't agree with.

You tale the cake. Congrats. NeoGAF is one of if not the harshest forum when it comes to piracy. One which all mods agree on it being unacceptable and yet all of them have said if Valve went down they would download the games again. But apparently thats illegal and unacceptable. Smh.

I thought about asking for a name change to my pen name, but then I was all "no, I really don't like it how people from the BSN somehow find me on other gaming forums and then PM me telling me that I am a horrible person".

That's funny, I'd heard that puns were the lowest form of wit, DimmuBurgerKing.

Well, that'd be "Burger King Diamond," but close enough and still punny. Ohoho.

It's a meme mostly used on 4chan.
When someone post something pornographic/ disgusting/ and generally totally "not to be seen by children, the other person writes "I'm 12 and what's this?", causing the other to react not knowing that he is being trolled...

Man...it is seriously like Bioware goes out of their way to piss their fans off and give their detractors more ammo. They need to rethink their community management a bit.

Companies really can't take chances with shit like this. It's dumb, but they'd rather not have someone abuse this to start a lawsuit.

Id be shocked if even 1 person who enjoys swtor unsubbed because of this. Seriously.

(besides the person who got banned lolz)

No, they probably won't, but I bet there some people out there who are wary of trying their games because of how much bad press they get for gaffes like this. It's waaaaay to common with them.

Is this seriously the first time so many people have heard about the existence of COPPA? You should never even kid about being under 13. Or maybe it's because I spent many of my years online on GameFAQs and now moderate a message board where we take the same action. Under 13 = Ban unless there is written permission from a parent.

Thing is Bioware did nothing wrong here. All they did was just follow standard forum rules. The guy who got banned is obviously just out to slander and create FUD because he apparently doesn't care if he's unbanned or not.

Maturity, bitches.
While the phrase is a bit of an in-joke (surprised so many feel the need to have heard a meme to accept it), it's pretty self explanatory as to what it means.

Also technically memes are not a form of wit, they are just a collection thought process based on association. Just that many find a form of wit in recognising the association.

He's not just a Bioware/ EA shill dude is an anti consumer zealot with his stance on not redownloading games bought legally if a company bans your access to said games for whatever reason they choose. Its ridiculous.

Especially after EA continually shows they will ban you for whatever reason. That shit is inexcusable.

Agreed. I love Valve and Steam (my name was LovingSteam ffs) but if I was ever banned from my account you best believe I wouldnt think twice about downloading every game I've purchased legally.

I'm on the fence as far as how I feel about this. One one hand, it's a meme, and a very strange one at that. I've never seen it until entering this thread before, like many others whom are usually pretty keen on such things. On the other hand, Bioware overreacted by instantly permabanning him. I would think some dialogue first would be the appropriate measure. For that matter, do we even know if there was an attempt made for some dialogue before this ban happened? For all we know they very well could have attempted to extend an olive branch before banning this guy, but seeing as he obviously isnt going to play the game anymore, he wouldnt have cared to respond.

Blinded by the luminous glory that is David Bowie's physical manifestation.
I just realized that someone gave me a tag linking to this thread.

I'm not sure if that's lulzy or facepalmy.

Because they're right: WTF seriously?

"It's okay to be banned from a game you own because the company is thinks your a big meanie doo-doo head and should have a $60 coaster."

Does that sound like a sane person?

I think it's reasonable to expect that they can ban people who violate their TOU from a service they own and maintain.

Though there are better ways to deal with this and forum accounts should not be tied to game accounts.

I don't think they banned him for that reason. I think they banned him because he said he was 12 years old. Meme or no, that's against their TOS he agreed to when signing up for an account. Is it harsh? Absolutely. But insane? Not so much imo

Shaking my head at this banning and at those mods for overreacting in such a heavy-handed manner.

Not only is it completely incongruous, in normal conversation, for someone to state their age out of the blue like that, but "I'm {number}" doesn't even necessarily mean that the 'number' is the person's age.

How about athletes referring to themselves using their jersey number? "Dunan, is this 14 jersey yours?" - "No, I'm 12; 14 is Jimmy." Prisoners being called by number?

Valkyria Chronicles 3 fans will agree that the Nameless need to be sent in to investigate.

Fucking hilarious. The guy knew this was a possibility when he supported these shit-hounds so there's no sympathy coming from my corner.
