It still has LEDs, and system date was 2009 when first booted.

A.R.K 12-01-2011 12:27 AM
No, that's not true, there's two LEDs. There's the power/standby LED above the ON/OFF button and there's the HDD activity LED.
Ok that's good enough.

Btw my old slim's drive (early 2010) was also louder than my phat model. So not sure if this is the same or even worse? I hope its the same because it is tolerable. Will find out tonight as to which model I got.

I think that is the new model. I don't see anyone claiming they've eliminated all the lights. And if you look at the power numbers I posted earlier, Daytona USA running at 58 watts is pretty damn impressive. I really think we do have the latest model and A and B is the difference between 160 and 320GB.

Yeah. Check out that link. They even source back to neogaf pictures. 3001A is the new model (just 160GB).

I think you're right. I've got an older slim as well, and this one doesn't have the wifi light.

rhfb 12-01-2011 12:41 AM

Hope my holiday bundle drive isn't loud :(

Few hours now until I get home and boot it up.

Speaking of booting it up, is there a specific thread that details the exact steps I need to take to get all of my stuff transferred off my old 60GB Phat to the new PS3 (and then wipe the 60GB back to factory clean state ready to be sold)?

Bebpo 12-01-2011 01:04 AM

Interesting. Well hopefully that means its the most sturdy and not-dying prone model yet. I just want a PS3 that survives until PS4 at this point :)

Derrick01 12-01-2011 02:45 AM
The drive is definitely louder, it's not as loud as lets say the Dreamcast loud, but its definitely noticeable where my 60GB I didn't even notice the drive spinning up.
Well I popped in little big planet 2 and the drive noise didn't really seem to kick up at all, I can't hear anything still.

Granted it's probably because this game's not exactly a graphical monster like uncharted 3, I'll have to test it out whenever that game gets here.

Just opened mine and yep that's the model I got in the ps3 bundle. Looks cheaper than my older original slim :(. Wifi led is gone. Sony logo in the front is not colored white, just engraved. Metallic plate is gone where on/off button is. Will be testing for drive loudness and hdd speed after kids sleep.

DonMigs85 12-01-2011 05:40 AM

In addition to shrinking the fan diameter a bit this model also uses a heatsink with vertical fins as opposed to the horizontal rows in older models. I wonder which is more effective...

friskykillface 12-01-2011 05:43 AM

Huh, first I'm hearing of this, though it would explain why it's been so quiet playing uncharted 3 on my new holiday slim then just a few weeks ago playing U3 on my old slim, that one was loud as hell.

I'll look at the back of mine in the morning.

ChanHuk 12-01-2011 06:29 AM

The unit itself is quiet, the BD drive is just loud as fuck compared to my old phatty. I'm playing AC and every cutscene drives me crazy because the BD drive is spinning for data.

A.R.K 12-01-2011 08:15 AM

Uugghhhh the data transfer is pain fully slow (1.5 hours and only 50%). And Sony fix trophy sync shit because I gave up as it was taking too long. Not doing this transfer shit again!!!

Nice and quiet, with only a little noise when reading the brd. I like that it is matte too.

ChanHuk 12-01-2011 04:43 PM

Well traded in my YLOD 60GB PS3 for $105 at Gamestop. Now I have no idea what to do with $105 in store credit :(

1-D_FTW 12-01-2011 04:43 PM

I've yet to put a blu-ray in it, but I played a DVD last night and it was silent. After some of these impressions, was fearing it was going to be a Wii with a Morse code of squawks and eeps from the drive. Hopefully blu-ray discs are equally as silent for me.

the insane amount of penny pinching from sony on ps3/psp revisions, shows how much they are struggling to compete price wise with MS and nintendo, MS can cut the price of the 360 any time they want, but they dont need to

Sony's been doing that forever, you just didn't have the internet tell you the difference between a 2000, 2100, 2500, and 3000 slim PS3.

Sony has always had a lot more pennies to pinch when it comes to build/assembly costs. They're just finally now coming down to the level MS and Nintendo have been at for a long time.

Takuan 12-01-2011 04:53 PM

Dat satin silver... North America never got these, right?

Part of me wishes I traded in my 40GB Phatty™ for a 160GB slim model back when EB had their promotion (I think they were giving people $150 or something to that effect for any fat model). I haven't had any issues with it, but I checked my HD space a while back and really didn't have much left considering the only games on the drive are the SF4 series, Noby Noby and DOTP2012. I can't remember the exact number, but it was less than 20GB.

Didn't realize this was necro'd from June. Not liking what I'm hearing about fan noise; mine makes enough noise as it is. Guess I'll hold onto it for a bit.

You're saying they're worse? Nobody is worse than Nintendo. They start out cheap and revise downward. SNES got its s-video support pulled. Gamecube got its component support pulled. Wii had some pretty nasty downgrades in the latest revision. If you were being incredibly harsh, you could accuse them of being on Nintendo's level with this. But that's overly harsh IMO.

Is that the newest one? Are you sure you're even supposed to orientate it vertically? There's zero mention anywhere in the quick-start instructions and there are only rubber feet for the horizontal position. Don't think you're supposed to do that. Unless the older slim allowed it.

Was kind of disappointed by this removal, but the thing is so ugly now, I'd just assume have it sitting horizontal and hidden from view.

I think the main reason they supported vertical placement was superior air flow/cooling. But since the newest slim has the side vents completely removed, there's no functional purpose for supporting it anymore.

EDIT: Rechecked that video. You've got a blu-led. So that's the 2500 model. Are you sure it supports vertical placement? The 3000s don't.

But is it upright or lying flat? If you have it upright, I'd try the other position and see if it makes a difference. That video is so shaky it's hard to tell, but it almost looks like the thing is wobbling slightly from the drive spinning.

Are these holiday bundle slims supposed to load slowly or does Uncharted 3 just load really slow for every ps3? Is it like that every time? I cant say 100% for sure, but i think that my first start of Uncharted 3 was a bit slower than usual.

Also, the first few bootups for U3 take much longer than later ones because it's also installing part of the game data to the HDD. Afterwards it's a lot more manageable.
Still kinda long though
.

Finally got my stuff transferred to the new the holiday slim. Got the old system deactivated and then activated on the new slim for all my 3 accounts. So far from what I saw (I didn't get the chance to play on it), the transfer utility basically makes an exact copy of the old system you are transferring from to the new one. So all the stuff from old slim is on the new system (downloaded games, demos, save files, accounts etc). So it looks like you don't have to do the transfer from each account separately, just the master one (which is what I did). Also as a precaution I saved the game saves to an external HDD just in case. But some games now don't even allow to save it to the HDD but just the PSN+ cloud which is BS! They should at least give the option to save it on the HDD (Crysis 2, BF3, Demon's Soul, KZ2 didn't have the HDD option). But good news is that the transfer utility copies everything AS IS to the new system and seems like everything is intact.

I ran a test just to see the noise levels of the BRDrive, and seems like it is about the same (may be more on the new model but not by much). But it does run quieter and cooler than the old slim. They took out the LEDs on the on/off and eject buttons and for wifi. The metallic looking strip (where on/off) is gone too. Looks like they were trying to cut the pennies every and any way they could.

Well I am glad I am finally done with this and hopefully won't have to do this again until PS4 :)

Also, how much power does it consume running more demanding games like Uncharted 3 or GT5?

Don't have experience with the old slim, but coming from a fat PS3 to slim and the slim can't even hold the fat's jock strap other than it probably won't YLOD.

Mine has been running all night DL'ing GT5 patches and DLC and after playing some GT5 I can't hear this PS3 at all.
I admit the cosmetic changes by removing the LED and silver PS sign is worse looking, the silence makes up for it.
And this coming from someone who still thinks the 360S is noisy.

I've been wanting to buy a new PS3 (sold mine a while back for money issues), good timing! I hope this one cuts the heat down, that's the only complaint I have about the system. Makes my room noticeably warmer and I live in Louisiana so that ain't enjoyable.

Definitely. Heat being dissipated in the room is basically all about wattage. I still don't have any retail discs I can pop in (will post when I do), but running Daytona USA uses about 58 watts. The plastic in back is a little warm, but that's because the fans are barely running. 58 watts isn't going to affect room temperature at all.

It'll be interesting to see what GT5 uses, but I'm not expecting more than 80 or 90 watts. Especially since Daytona uses a couple watts less (on average) than the dashboard. So clearly these things aren't being undervolted at idle like a modern CPU/GPU. So I don't anticipate there being a major jump in wattage for full games.

Well I played through Uncharted 3 on the holiday bundle slim and it went extremely well. There was no actual system noise change and the drive while kinda loud only made noises every now and then and was never an actual problem.

It does seem to take a while to cool down but it never gets really hot. When I'm done using it and it's cooled off I throw a towel over it to keep the dust off. From what I've heard the fan is smaller and thinner so I don't want this thing to choke on dust.

The Holiday bundle made it so you'd be an idiot not to pick one up. $199 for a DVD/Blu-Ray/Netflix player that could play games was stupid to pass up, especially since they gave you two games to go along with it. If they do another holiday bundle run you should definitely get in on it.

But I was watching a blu-ray and the disc drive wasn't too annoying since my volume was turned up, the PS3 itself was whisper quiet and my room was still freezing.

Derrick01 12-04-2011 03:17 AM

I also feel that it's important to note that since I didn't want the 2 games the system came with I traded them in to gamestop and, with the 10% extra from the powerup card, received about $41 total. So I feel like I got an even better deal than what it already was.

Thing is though those holiday bundles were only being sold on black friday so unless you can find a cheap one on ebay it seems fence sitters are screwed. Can still pick up a normal slim I guess.

ChanHuk 12-04-2011 05:35 AM

W/c heatsink design do you guys think is more effective:
This is the 3000's

And the previous slims

Maybe they figured the previous design was overkill and the new one is just good enough?

1-D_FTW 12-04-2011 01:35 PM

It's really hard to get a grasp of exactly what you're looking at in those pictures, but I'm actually inclined to like the 3000 better (if I'm visualizing it correctly). Seems like that closed structure would be more efficient (again, assuming I'm not missing something obvious).
iunno, my new white ps3 is quieter than my older launchslim.
usually when a system is new it tends to be quieter than after some months of use. thermal compound used between the heatsinks and cpu/gpu tend to degrade, fan bearings wear off and dust gets in the way of perfect airflow.

:)

Ok little update.

I did do the data transfer utility thing successfully! All games and data were sent over just 1 or 2 corrupt themes. The whole ordeal took like 3 or so hours. Total data was ~110 GB Transfered. The Only issue I had is that on my fatty, I have a 320gb so I did have to delete some stuff to fit onto the new slim. No was I was gonna waste more hours backing up videos and shit. That's mainly what I removed. Old as PSN videos like Pulse and crap.

Overall though the machine is indeed quieter. My fatty's fans are normally loud even when it's not doing much. I was playing Dark Souls for a few hours last night and the unit remained nice and quiet. I'm sure my fatty would of been blowing air and noise to boot.

But I must say. The slim design is an ugly pos. Don't really like it. It's my first one so maybe I'll get used to it. I'm sure the fat ps3 was ugly at one point too. I like the matte color/texture though. Else it's a good deal.

I need to sell te 2 games that came with the system but I dot know where. I'll look into GS but I'd have to buy their membership to get an extra 10% which is not what I'd like.

Sony and third-party manufacturers still sell stands for putting the PS3 slim in the upright position, I don't see them remove that going from CECH-2500 to CECH-3000...

I've just received my 3003A 160GB, and I'm not sure if it's already been mentioned (or if indeed this change pre-dates this hardware revision), but the controller now seems to have a horribly cheap plastic-feeling D-Pad, and I also suspect the face buttons of feeling (and looking) a bit cheaper too.

My DS3 (320GB Sports Champion Bundle) felt this way from the very first moment I held it. The plastic feels really cheap.

Wow @ the slim's disc drive noise. Sounds like some laptop drives I've heard. Mid-to-late 2000s Macbooks, maybe?

Cool but it depends on the games. I was playing Dark Souls and it was wisper quiet along with quiet fans.

Im sure my old phat would read the disk quietly but be pumping out air and making noise from it. Ill take the new slim. Seems it only noisy when its reading data like that on the video.

1-D_FTW 12-06-2011 10:15 PM

GT 5's power consumption seemed to max at around 74 or 75. When looking, don't think I've ever seen it higher.

Have to say, definitely pleased with it. It's ugly as sin, but beyond that, in the things that are important, seems like a real nice revision.

Disc drive isn't that bad. Can't remember what my old PS3 sounded like, but I don't think it was much quieter. And this thing is silent beyond the blu-ray drive. Drive is definitely a lot quieter than Wii's IMO.

Yeah this is definitely more silent than my 60gb was. The drive is louder but the overall system noise is as close to 0 as you can get probably while still being on. I remember playing Uncharted 2 on my 60gb and it sounded like it wanted to die right there.

I'll gladly take a slightly louder drive that so far hasn't affected my playing over an overheating jet engine.

Sounds like the slim is seeking more often. Weird. Maybe it can't tilt the optics (quiet) as far before it has to move the head (noisy).

UFRA 12-07-2011 01:28 AM

I have the "old" slim model and I thought my optical drive was going bad, glad to see that it actually just is a noisy son of a bish, and not an issue.

DonMigs85 12-07-2011 06:02 AM

Anybody know if the Splash Blue PS3 has the color ingrained in the plastic, or is it just paint?
That's one thing I hated about the platinum GameCube since it could get scratched.

jsnepo 12-15-2011 04:21 AM

The blu ray drive is driving me nuts. It's as noisy as the Dreamcast.

Have you ever had a Wii? Because Wii is worse than PS3 IMO.

friskykillface 12-15-2011 01:26 PM

"vrooooommmmm" stop then "vroooooooooom" a minute later, that's the cycle for the noise in my new PS3 :(

At first I thought it was broken haha but after reading some threads that's the noise I should expect from now on, oh well

Does anyone know if PSN games will transfer over using the Transfer Utility?

Or will I have to redownload everything again?

Everything transfers.

Lord Error 12-15-2011 04:13 PM

Some games really bring the worst out of slim's disc drive. Uncharted 2 is a medium range offender, but on the other hand UC3 loads much quieter.
The blu ray drive is driving me nuts. It's as noisy as the Dreamcast.
Oh. hell no. Thousand times no.

sillymonkey321 12-18-2011 03:49 AM

Ended up getting a ps3 slim 3001 model from Kmart with their $50 coupon deal, the only 160GB model they had left was the last holiday bundle with lbp2 and ratchet, but i think someone returned it......but i can't prove it, it's just odd that they had only ONE ps3 in stock and it happened to be a typically out of stock unit.

Aside from the healthy paranoia, my experience with it so far:

Yes it has a noisy blu ray disc drive but i don't mind it, it's not all the time either and i used to have a dreamcast which was indeed much worse.

Fan/general noise: It has an annoying low humming noise as it's general system noise, compared to the noise of just a fan blowing air out like my old 60GB system. Between the two though, i'll take the low hum over a space heater. When 6 or so feet away, with dead silence in the room, you can definitely hear the hum, but it's a non-factor with any tv/game noise.

It's a Belkin Insight.

And here's a great piece of news for people who are thinking about upgrading: EVERYTHING transfers when you use the Data Transfer Utility!

It literally makes an exact duplicate of your old PS3. It's truly quite amazing and far superior to the Backup/Restore Utility.

Marco1 12-18-2011 03:01 PM

Can I use the backup to a external HDD as I don't see the point if my PS3 dies and I need to exchange it in-store? There is no way a store will let me take it home and trust me to return it once the restore has been done.

Does your slim make a slight electronic humming noise?
Does your slim make a slight electronic humming noise?
I have a new slim. What do you mean by electric humming noise? The machine itself? Or in the audio?
I have a new slim. What do you mean by electric humming noise? The machine itself? Or in the audio?
The machine itself. You can hear it most at the front left side, but instead of a loud "fan blowing air " noise, i get a little fan noise and a slight steady hum. You'll mostly hear it if the room is silent though.

Louis Cyphre 12-18-2011 03:32 PM

I just recently got the infamous 2 bundle that comes with the 320GB system. Anyone else notice the official remote not working as well? Not sure if this was due to a system update or the actual new system I bought. I used to have an old phat model and the remote worked better.

Yeah. I have it then. Turned everything off and put my head in front. Could hear the faint whirl of the tiny fan spinning. Then I put my head above the unit (and into the echo of the shelving) and I could hear that humming. So it's there, but short of turning everything else off and sticking my head right into the shelving, I'd never hear it.

Thanks for checking, I think that rules out trying to exchange it for another one. I can still hear it several feet away in a quiet room , but I tend to hear everything, partly why i haven't bought a plasma tv yet incase the slight buzzing at the back of the panel drives me crazy.

Next step: use my 30 day psn + membership to get a discount on the 2 year warranty Sony sells through.

DonMigs85 12-19-2011 05:28 AM

Anybody know how the actual temperatures on the GPU/CPU on the 3000 compare to the previous slims? That inferior heatsink design with vertical fins still worries me.

I could do a temperature measurement of the exhaust outlets.

My old PS3 had a 250GB HDD and about 13GB free space (not sure if the space reserved for system cache is factored in). I guess using a Cat6 Gigabit ethernet cable doesn't really speed it up either.

DonMigs85 12-28-2011 04:57 AM
