It's one of those things, I knew that, but after playing some of the launch titles (especially Ridge Racer) I really needed to see a game that proved it. MK7 is that game. It looks great :)

I guess, but there's plenty of ways for those behind to bend you over, without the need of a just automatically fuck the guy in the lead button.

yeah, I understand the frustration. I just think skill will always push you up the pile. Blue shell sucks hardcore though.

So does red shell followed by a gang bang of green shells, banananas and invincible guys that go by on the last corner leaving you in 8th.

Agreed that when you hear the blue shell noise it sucks. Best you can do is stop dead and try to fuck second place with it as well.

Not really. Everything else can be countered. Imagine how easy it would be to just stay in front of the mid pack clusterfuck without the odd blue shell. You wouldn't even need to drive well, everyone else behind you would be getting hit with multiple items and you'd only have the occasional red shell from the guy in second to block. Get a lead on the first lap and you'd be untouchable. Blue shells do screw over the leader but bullet bills and stars also screw over the people mid pack.

I live in an old terraced house and although my phone's wifi copes alright, my 3DS seems to drop out of signal when I'm up in my bedroom because of all the old walls. When I'm in my bedroom I actually use the Portable Hotspot feature on my HTC Desire S in preference over my in-house Wifi because it performs better and there are no comms drop-outs.

If your router has DMZ or something similar have you tried making your 3DS static IP and adding it to that? Or port-forwarding port 65535?
It's one of those things, I knew that, but after playing some of the launch titles (especially Ridge Racer) I really needed to see a game that proved it. MK7 is that game. It looks great :)
I like the main NeoGAF communities, but shall we also start a UK GAF community? If there isn't one already that is..

Are the guys on 400+ points just playing non-stop by the way? I couldn't do that, my fingers cramp up after like half an hour. I'll probably use that Circle Pad Pro thing for every game, even the ones that don't support it!

Ah dude, this is MarioKart. It's the same thing as Mario Party, being in the lead just makes you a humongous target for deeply unfair power-ups. It's the nature of the beast. It does mean that you can feel like a hero if you shrug off the blue shell and stay in first place.

At least it's not like the SNES days when the game was maliciously unfair.

I think it'd be good for the sort of timezone dead-zone Europe has while North America works and Japan sleeps...

if we assume that most people work during the week and that therefore people in each region would probably be playing / peaking between 4pm and 11pm in their respective timezones, between 17:00 and 20:00 GMT would be the best time for a Brit/Euro-GAF community (or put another way... that would be the best time to come online if you want to play Euro-GAF).

It is unlikely that Europe is going to get many games with North Americans between:

12:00 GMT (4am West Coast, 7am East Coast) and
21:00 GMT (1pm West Coast, 4pm East Coast)
It is unlikely that Europe is going to get many games with J-GAF between:

16:00 GMT (01:00am Tokyo) and
04:00 GMT (01:00pm Tokyo)
.

*timezone calculations may be a bit off, not account for funny local adjustments

Obviously, gamers are insomniacs so all of this may be null and void.

CrazedProfessional 12-05-2011 10:41 AM

Rezbit 12-05-2011 10:42 AM

Getting hit by an item and falling off the edge will result in bad things happening one day!

radioheadrule83 12-05-2011 10:44 AM

Do you need a mushroom to dodge the blue shell or can it be done (albeit in a difficult way) with a powerslide boost like in Mario Kart DS?

I've had a couple of games online where I've dropped off the track intentionally when I hear the blue shell siren because the recovery time is faster from a fall - if you time your acceleration when Lakitu drops you, you get a boost and get right back up to speed (sans 2 coins obviously).

I LOVE catching other people in the blue shell blast wave btw.

Anyone else think that the fireball is the most dangerous new item btw? Much easier to hit opponents behind you (just aim up on the touch screen and fire, or spray them everywhere with slight turns), ricochets take other people out... if you target one person with all your fireballs, its mega-harsh!

marc^o^ 12-05-2011 10:46 AM

I love this game. 14 hours on it already!

Mistle 12-05-2011 10:46 AM

It sucks for Aussies trying to find a packed community. My main play hours are anywhere from dinner until sleep. Which, in the US i believe, is from sleep to wake ._. lol

But its also good in a way as i usually end up racing fellow aussies.

CrazedProfessional 12-05-2011 10:49 AM

You can dodge them with a regular powerdrift if you have a really sharp corner, like really sharp, right angled.

GC|Simon 12-05-2011 10:50 AM

I just read the Iwata Asks episode about MK7. At the beginning, I was shocked that the EAD staff didn't know Retro. I thought: "What the hell? They made four games which all belong to the best ones Nintendo ever released. How is it possible that EAD doesn't know them?!". But the collaboration worked quite well according to the interview. Even if Nintendo still seems to treat Retro like some external developer.... Retro's reputation is rising. They made some excellent games in collaboration with SPD and now they worked together with EAD. They are getting more and more famous at Ninendo Japan and this will most likely pay-off in future.

Rezbit 12-05-2011 10:54 AM

Just rage-quitted in a WW match. Don't usually do this in games but this got to me. Kalimari Desert, first place and smashing it at the start of the last lap then get hit in succession with: blue shell, red shell, red shell, green shell, star and bumped after it, pushing me off the track. End result - 8th. SMH.

Choco Island 1
Donut Plains 2
Bowser Castle 2
Koopa Beach 1
Vanilla Lake 1
Bowser Castle 3
Mario Circuit 4
Donut Plains 3
Ghost Valley 3
Vanilla Lake 2

N64:
Toad's Turnpike
Wario Stadium
Royal Raceway
Yoshi Valley
Rainbow Road

GBA:
Riverside Park
Mario Circuit
Boo Lake
Cheese Land
Cheep-Cheep Island
Sunset Wilds

Yoshi Desert
Lakeside Park
Broken Pier
Bowser Castle 4
Rainbow Road

GCN:

Well looks like we're going to end up with a load of GBA and SNES tracks in MK8. Surprised only one GBA course got in this time round.

Yeah, removing the blue shell doesn't mean the most skilled racer wins. You can look at that Sega kart racer from last year for proof. Its items were pretty much identical to Mario Kart's, but there was no blue shell-esque item that fucked with players at the head of the pack. So what happened was whoever was lucky enough to escape the initial item clusterfuck unscathed would build a huge, insurmountable lead while everyone else was stuck in a miserable projectile gangbang for the remainder of the race. Battling for a minutes-behind, second place finish is even more unfun than losing your lead to a blue shell. It's just miserable.

At least now folks who wanna play some kinda weird mascot Gran Turismo can join item free communities.

3-starring 150 cups is not good for my BP. I can finish races in 1st position just fine, but bullshit me with your magic item combination and I won't.

Are there any bonuses for this by the way, or is it a mix of bragging rights and OCD appeasement?

Also, need more Euro 3DS friends. Or anyone from the superior time zones. FC: 4725 - 7997 - 9310

I do not know if this is the best Mario Kart, but one thing's for sure, the new courses are certainly the most creative.

Heh, it can mess you up at times. My worst was driving straight off the edge of rainbow road because I was fixated on it trying to get the star.

Yeah, it can be a distraction.

Edit: Also, the 3DS needs a Community channel (not the show). Let me log in and check out what gaf's playing, then I can join in if that's available.

Would be awesome.

I did it last night and got nothing. The star cup was the worst for me- I could maintain a huge lead on the first 3 races but I always accidentally a coma on the Wuhu track, I hate both of them so much... The three stars show up next to your name in the points table after the last race so you don't have to wait to see if you got the ranking.
Wow, people weren't kidding when they said their Mii Plaza filled up after playing a little while. Just checked it this morning and it looks like everyone from the GAF community is in there, plus a bunch of randoms from worldwide matches. At least it's less lonely in there now since I never ever get Street Passes where I live.
Had no clue that would happen. Checked mine and honestly I don't like it. I much rather that space was reserved for just people I street pass. Pointless having them there if I don't get puzzle pieces from them or can't use them in Find Mii. It's really annoying because I've only been able to get one additional puzzle from handful of street passes I have gotten. They've all been from store units as well. :(

Edit:

Didn't realize but there is a setting on by default I think (don't remember setting it myself) that invites Mii characters from other games to the plaza. It's in the Plaza Settings. Turned it off. Now to go through them all and get rid of the recent ones. Ugh. Going to take a while. Have about 60 in there now. Guess I'll do a few at a time.

Is a separate group for different time zones really necessary?
Surely if we just have one group per mode then everyone can just join that and play with whoever is on instead of splitting the players between multiple groups.

Boken 12-05-2011 12:56 PM

I don't understand the point of having region specific communities. If we all just use the one community, it doesn't matter if there is no NAgaf on at the time because EUgaf would be on and they'd play with other EUgaf.

Infact, I think it's POINTLESS.
Yeah, that's true.
For sure, I played a couple of games online, then went into the Community and I came 1st in a game with the top 3 in it. That's the only downside to the Community, how inaccurate the rankings are.

dock 12-05-2011 01:02 PM

Just had my first Neogaf game! I completely lost, partially because I was making coffee, but had a great time! :)

The community idea is great! I really wish the 3DS had some way to monitor communities from the dashboard, so I could look out for activity whilst playing other games.

Air Zombie Meat 12-05-2011 01:03 PM

Yeah I agree about not needing region specific communities. Was getting plenty of games on the main gaf one last night between 5 and 9 in the UK and there was quite a few people from regions outside of europe joining in. If we make them region specific it's just going to discourage those people from joining.

It'd be good if you could view a 'points divided by games' table, I agree that the rankings are pretty much useless.

Little annoyances aside (bit of lag here and there, and limited customization of communities), I'm absolutely loving the online, especially since I opted out of Mario Kart Wii.
