The thing that pisses me off is how I just CANT understand all the inner-workings of a shot. I line it up perfectly, a tad bit of wind that I compensate for, add some backspin, hit the ball directly in the center....and it freakin ends up 15 yards short in a bunker. WTF is this shit about??

Precisely. It's so annoying.

MrPliskin 03-03-2012 03:55 PM

Back spin makes your ball fly higher, this distance is lost. Front spin makes it fly straighter and reduces impact of wind, but the ball falls faster (lands shorter).

Don't forget you need to account for the landing point and carry of the ball. The figures you see are just guides, they aren't going to be exact with so many variables - you really will get a feel for what adjustments to make.

As has been mentioned as well, work on making sure you have a good control stat (use the right clubs/characters/balls) to get as close to what you expect as possible. I'm on silver now and I'm far from an expert - using Grace at the moment but I'm going to switch to Amy as soon as Grace is maxed.

30 minutes for 9 holes is no better. If anything 9 holes are worse since you have to wait more often for the tournaments to start.

You also need to consider that the carry to run ratio(carry= how far the ball travels till it hits the ground for the first time, run how far it travels after it hits the ground) varies depending on the club. Generally speaking though, if you do backspin in Hot Shots, apart from maybe the driver and 3 wood the carry to run ratio is like 97%:3%. You're not factoring in something. Probably height. Are these elevated greens you're hitting into? Is the wind partially in your face?

I actually had this issue with Fantasy Golf Pangya when I first played it. The carry to run ratio in it is way different then hot shots. Even a 100 yard chip with 100% backspin would only go 70 yards in the air and run the other 30(then the backspin would happen if I did a backspin shot). I was landing in bunkers and water hazards left right and center I thought I could easily clear. It just took me time to get used to that.

Sometimes you have to hit the ball too hard knowing it will bounce in the rough just outside the green and that will take off most of the extra power and it will land right where you want it to. Or it will hit a slope killing all the speed. Hell sometimes the opposite happens and the ball runs right off the green. You need to pay attention to the slope of the greens as well.

The thing that REALLY effects where the ball lands is elevation. After I got that down, the game became way easier. Look at the little arrow where it's going to land.

Red = hit it way farther than where you think.
Yellow = hit it a little farther.
Blue = Hit it shorter.

I wish the description would have been a touch more detailed. Power Shot: +2 doesn't mean you get two more power shots it turns out... Had to withdraw from that tournament :(

Lots of people forget/don't understand that. The verbiage is the way Hot Shots has always done it. I think it's the fact that it's a positive thing being penalized that confuses people.

Hot Shots has always had "Hit a tree +1" "Bunker +2" rules. I don't think anyone would look at those and say "I should try and hit a tree in this round. It'll give me something".

JakkuFurosu 03-03-2012 06:43 PM

If it would have said +2 Stroke I would have understood it right away. As it was presented though I thought I had 2 more power shots to use (pretty helpful since I'm using the beginning characters/gear still since I haven't unlocked anything better).

Currently I'm 9th. I've been bouncing around between 7th and 11th. I need top 10's to get any higher and they are hard to come by. It's hard to hit every green in the minimum possible number of shots and not miss a single putt.

TheFLYINGManga_Ka 03-03-2012 07:57 PM

Been thinking about picking this up but I wish there were more courses. Hot Shots Golf Open Tee 2 has 12 courses and it's still $30 on PSN for some bizarre reason.

I hate DLC but if it means more courses than I'll pick it up. At least 10 courses would be good.

You don't slip that much. I think very few (~100?) people play daily. I'm like 250 something and I've only played on a handful of days. But yeah I hope they put some thought into how it will be reset and stuff. Honestly just reset it daily. When I play I can usually play all 3 but the issue is I just can't play at all on many days. I still like it though no matter what. Good way to get money and level up players while still feeling like you're making prograss toward some abstract thing.

Well what an interesting night ive had online.

1st game - 2nd place
2nd game - was in 2nd and messed up terribly hitting a triple bogey to make me finish 8th.

3rd game - finished bottom of 7 people I think.

Last game...... My first 18 holer tournie. Had a tremendous start with a couple of birdies, chip in eagle and then followed it with my 2nd hole in one!! That gave me a 6 shot lead with 6 holes gone and at the halfway mark I was 800pts clear.
I kept my form and continued to hit birdies for the rest with a par in between. I finished -18 and about 1200 pts clear.

Will post screenie tomorrow to prove I'm not lying!
Best game I've ever played. Every single shot on the green bar a few was about a ft away and the ones that weren't I was nailing the putts.

Just one of those games were everything went right. I'm more shocked because I did so bad in the games leading up to it. I'm very pleased with 2 hole in ones in less than 2 weeks of playing.

Syn23 03-04-2012 12:15 AM

How does the slope of the spot where you're hitting the ball (for example on the fairway or in the rough) affect your shot? I'm not talking about putting, I'm talking about "long range" shots. Can anyone clarify it?

It's easy really say your lie looks at an angle similar to this / I would aim more to the right as when you strike the ball it's going to veer to the left due to the angle. Wind direction still has to be taken into consideration though.

Sorry I know I haven't explained it great.

Syn23 03-04-2012 01:02 AM

Yeah, I get the general rule, but I can't understand why sometimes the deviation is really low/unnoticeable and other times the shot deviates a lot more. I guess I have to take into consideration if the shot is from the fairway or from the rough, what kind of club I'm using and if I'm doing a shot labeled as "approach", but I'm not sure how all these things affect it.

Alex Anderson 03-04-2012 01:11 AM

Downslope: Ball won't fly as high when struck, wind will affect it less. Won't carry as far in the air, will roll more than a shot from a flat lie. Severity of the slope can affect whether super backspin works when properly inputted.

Upslope: Ball will fly higher when struck, wind will affect it more. Will typically carry farther in the air unless you're facing an extreme headwind. Will roll less after landing.

Left/Right slopes: Have to adjust aim in the opposite direction to make up for the slope.

AstroLad 03-04-2012 01:15 AM

Slopes are tough. Years later and I still find them very tricky.
Erm, if I want to add spin to the ball, how do I time the d-pad button press? Just holding it down doesn't seem to work properly, or I'm just not getting it.
Super Back Spin

"Try pressing UP when setting power and DOWN at impact. Get a perfect impact and unleash a Super Back Spin that makes the ball burn blue and spin backwards on the green or fairway."

Just make sure the d-pad is being pressed at the same time as the button press. There's no limit on how long you can hold the d-pad down or special timing to it.

If you do it correctly, the ball marker in the bottom right corner will have a blue dot on it.

Super Topspin works the reverse way (DOWN when setting power and UP at impact)

Super Sidespin. If you want to bend it left, press RIGHT when setting power, LEFT at impact. And vice versa.

I've never used spin yet, off or online. You just have to get used to gauging how much power to give your approach shots in relation to wind direction, green lie etc. you will get better in time. After you have done certain courses/holes over and over you start to remember what does and doesn't work.

Until you learn the basics, just focus on sorting out your button timings. All the spins in the world won't help you become more accurate until you know to hit the pink zone (or perfect impact - 0%).

Once you have impact down, backspin (down) stops the ball quicker and is best used for shots to the green where you have a smaller target (watch the wind). Topspin allows the ball to roll further and I sometimes use for tee shots to get some more distance. Try it on hole 1 of maple. at the right point and wind speed, you can shoot that green in one shot, though your putt will be difficult.

Sidespins are best used for getting round obstacles but they can help to stop the ball rolling down some slopes faster than you'd like.

I'll see if I can think of anything afterwards. Might be worth heading to Training mode to try some things out. Even a real-life physics experiment with a ball and a book on a slant might help ;)

by count do you mean unlock the trophy? I had a homing shot the other day, I think it was an unlimited power shot tourny. I'm guessing that was why I didn't get the trophy, or do the daily tournaments not get you any shot trophies?
The last few games in a row I've finished at +2, 1 behind the leader so I'm close now. Using Stuart with Grass Cutter lvl 2 clubs and Pinpoint lvl 2 balls. Nothing better unlocked yet.

Does that seem good enough?
Yeah, not too dissimilar to me really. Using Amy and Pin Hole v2 clubs and balls - none of it helps with me being shit when on the green of course. To be honest I'd be better laying up and chipping as my first "putt".

Yes I mean not getting the trophy. You can get trophies in the online tournaments or dailies as long as there are no special conditions.

Yeah I don't know why I was asking about clubs and balls when the times I blow it always seem to be acts of god.

Beginner league - lol~
Amateur league - Barring some small issues , not so bad at all.
Pro league - The hell happened?! I can't land anything decent and I'm over/under estimating like every shot.

:| Also had the game do the back door putt animation into super slow down and spinning around the hole forever ... to eventually whiff completely. That's some cruelty right there and signaled the end of playing for the night. Don't know what it would've had in store for me after that.

That's been my experience too so far. :( I really wish they would've made a more gradual difficulty curve.

I finally made one during an official tournament. Felt good, in that I had done like three already but they were all in unofficial rounds (one in the real golf challenge, even!).

Almost gave max loyalty. Then I have one more trophy til plat - the SOLD OUT one which will surely be fun with the random lobby parts machines giving me tons of double items :/

I have all the parts. I only need to buy 2 more 20k outfits and the 5k outfits that unlock after those are purchased. I have one more character I need to max loyalty and I'll get the money needed to unlock the outfits doing that easy. Then I'll do a couple rounds to get the special shots I need on purpose. Then I'll just have to keep playing the game and hope that Albatross doesn't take forever to happen.

The tough part might be that after the easy tournaments you're just focused on max distance to lead to minimal shots and there's really nothing that can mess that up (easy greens, kind placement of hazards, good weather, etc.). Once you get to the third and fourth sets you have to abandon that mentality and focus on playing it safe and in some cases actually look at where your ball will go after it hits. After those yes it does start to feel like there are literally no easy shots but hey that's what makes the game fun sometimes. :D

God damn PSN down time fukced over my best ever daily tourney scores. By the time I got to playing them last night the PSN was down. Submission deadline has long passed and still no PSN. Yarg, sucks when you play well and it doesn't count.

eznark 03-05-2012 04:34 PM

Enter tournament today.

Hole out from 100 yards on second shot!!

"PAR"

What????

(+2 for power shots)

SONUVA!

Number45 03-05-2012 04:46 PM

I think a lot of people got caught out on that the first time, I know I did. :(

Those tournaments are the easiest ones to get a good rank on because so many people forget.

Looks like a lot of people had trouble connecting. I tanked on yesterdays dailies and didn't lose my position at all. In fact there's a larger gap between me and the ranks below me. The guy who was 5 points ahead of me is now 50 points below since he didn't do a single daily yesterday.

I guess I was lucky and didn't have any trouble connecting.
None of the megacup shots are recorded.
I wasn't aware of that. That's a shame as it was a mega shot (pardon the pun).

Got my highest ever finish on a daily yesterday (20th) it bumped my rank from 450 to a still lowly 387. Hey it's progress.

CSSer 03-05-2012 06:15 PM

Just worked my fucking arse off to get a -1 win on 5-4, and managed to get the crown as well. So drained.

krae_man 03-05-2012 10:54 PM

Was less then 1 foot away from an albatross in the first daily today. Power Shot +2 would have disqualified it from the trophy anyway.

alterno69 03-06-2012 03:09 AM

I'm really enjoying my time with the game, only beat the second challenge today but it has been great fun, i've tried a couple of character but i'm stiking with the first one for now.

Played three online tournaments today, did pretty bad but it was still fun. Such a great game and i don't understand the sub native resolution complaint, sure it's not as sharp as the Ps3 games but it looks awesome IMO.

STG! 03-06-2012 03:18 AM

Does anyone else have trouble connecting to the lobby? I'd like to play some of you guys online, but it always gives me the same message "Connection to server failed. Try again." and an error code, something like G-00000A. I've tried this on two of my wireless networks and when I first got everything set up I was able to connect to it once on one of them, but after that, no dice. Same error message.

Strange since I'm able to hop onto the Daily online tournaments. And I pass all the network tests in the setup menu on the Vita. Kind of stumped on this one, anyone have an idea?

Echoes 03-06-2012 05:04 AM

I love the game, but I don't understand some stuff. For example, what would be affected by changing the clubs (L/R)? Is it the same as hitting the ball above the middle point (say you're in sand)?

The game does a poor job in outlining the depth of it IMO. It's just so good I wanna learn all the ins and outs of it. :(

At its most basic, changing the club affects the distance that you can hit the ball. However it also changes things like the flight of the ball (typically I think the smaller the club (1W biggest) the higher the flight of the ball) and certain clubs are better in certain situations than others. The hint screens can actually be viewed in the data section, if I recall correctly.

newsguy 03-06-2012 10:39 AM

Daily tournaments are the smartest thing ever created. When I don't have much time to game (and what adult does?) I can hop on and see how I fair. The answer: Not so well.

Yep, my work at lunch currently entails: 1. eating for twenty minutes or so, 2. thorough hand washing (obviously) and 3. EG dailies.

Love them. Great way to grind loyalty as well.

Changing where you hit the ball left to right will put curve on the ball. You do that if you want to hit your shot around an obsticle like a tree for example.

I really wish there was a way to share videos. This game is great but really does feel like a repurposed PSP game. Really this is the type of game that would require someone a few hours to figure out something like that. There's literally like 8 variables maximum to save per shot. They already have the feature programmed because you can save shots.

Problem is you don't save shots, you save entire holes. If you have an awesome chip in for birdie on a par 5, you have to sit through the first 3 shots before you see the good one.

I don't get the difference. You can save entire matches of Halo or edit them down into clips. The replay files are probably smaller than the trophy data you sync on a daily basis. You Tube integration would be nice, but being able to see your friends shared videos on your Vita would be more useful (especially because you wouldn't even be able to see the video if it were on You Tube).

AstroLad 03-06-2012 08:37 PM

I would just want links to post in here myself. Had some sweeeet shots yesterday. Man there's nothing like that feeling of "ooh nice approach . . . OMG OMG it's going to go in [fist pump]"

If you have 3 shots plus a chip in, on a par 3, you have a bogey my friend.

Typo, I meant Par 5.

Anyway, it would be nice to be able to upload the videos to youtube. A very simple edit feature would be nice as well.

see5harp 03-06-2012 08:56 PM

I really don't get the fascination with you tube support. The video is much smaller if you just save the presence data that your Vita is already saving. You can also adjust the cameras on the fly.
