After watching some of the Japanese demo footage I'm not sure where all the negativity is coming from. There is some chop during cutscenes, the grass draw-in is closer than on console, some of the textures are blurrier, but otherwise it looks fine to me. Maybe it will look worse in person.
What? The framerate is terrible all round, although it IS especially hideous during cut-scenes. This port is a failure as far as I'm concerned.

Aostia 02-16-2012 12:51 PM
These are the latest cut-scenes released by konami. probably 2 weeks old, IIRC.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9WvnuWDRTDs

the framerate looks ok.
Yes, but there was also the last japanes trailer released two days ago that looked horrible, in cut scene.
And also some bad feedbacks from the Japanese 3ds owners that downloaded the demo...
So, let's say that I hope the western demo will be better, so the final game! :)

ultron87 02-16-2012 12:55 PM

All I want from this game: when you have an eyepatch on it should disable 3d in first person.

MarshMellow96 02-16-2012 12:56 PM

I never played the original Snake Eater, but MGS2 was silky smooth. Is it fair to assume that this was the case for MGS3, too?

Medalion 02-16-2012 12:57 PM

Is this demo out today?

Azure Dream 02-16-2012 12:59 PM
All I want from this game: when you have an eyepatch on it should disable 3d in first person.
They could actually simulate the effect by showing the eyepatch side as pure black.

It really fucks with your eyes when I've loaded up photos like that on the 3DS. I'm sure Nintendo would be thrilled.

jonno394 02-16-2012 12:59 PM

Never liked the first version of MGS 3 due to the camera angle you were restricted to, but I liked MGS and MGS 2.

Looking forward to playing the demo though, hope it's good!!

Deadly Cyclone 02-16-2012 12:59 PM

Already have MGS 3 in the collection but I'll give this a shot for sure.

That would be awesome!

both MGS2 and MGS3 on the PS2 has framerate issues.

Coin Return 02-16-2012 01:02 PM

I thought the e-shop didn't update until noon EST...

Ragus 02-16-2012 01:03 PM

The demo has arrived at the european eshop.

Sadist 02-16-2012 01:03 PM

Downloading it now. (Euroland) 1088 blocks btw.

AkimbO_Arcana 02-16-2012 01:03 PM

It's up.

And Wario Land! Nice!

MarshMellow96 02-16-2012 01:04 PM
both MGS2 and MGS3 on the PS2 has framerate issues.
But MGS2 was 60fps notwithstanding those framerate issues, right? Was MGS3 the same?

radioheadrule83 02-16-2012 01:06 PM
Downloading it now. (Euroland) 1088 blocks btw.
That's only about 136mb I believe... if the blocks are 128kb and my math doesn't suck

The perfect Dark 02-16-2012 01:07 PM
That's only about 136mb I believe... if the blocks are 128kb and my math doesn't suck
your math sucks. It's about 139 mb :P

Salaadin 02-16-2012 01:10 PM

Dumb question: Does this have Peace Walker style gameplay complete with crouch walking, fleshed out CQC, and all the various on screen prompts/indicators or is it more a less a straight copy of MGS3 with reworked controls?

Medalion 02-16-2012 01:11 PM

Damn, on west coast of Canada, demo still not up yet.

Coin Return 02-16-2012 01:12 PM
Damn, on west coast of Canada, demo still not up yet.
It's only up for Europe right now, will be up in about 3 hours for NA.
But MGS2 was 60fps notwithstanding those framerate issues, right? Was MGS3 the same?
No, I'm pretty sure at it's best it capped at 30 but was mostly lower.

Solid warrior 02-16-2012 01:16 PM

downloading...

Zero148 02-16-2012 01:16 PM

Downoading now. I'm looking forward to check it out.

I need a bigger SD card btw...

Sadist 02-16-2012 01:16 PM

And it's done. I'll be playing :)

dark10x 02-16-2012 01:18 PM
both MGS2 and MGS3 on the PS2 has framerate issues.
Oh no, let's not go there.

MGS2 had an incredible framerate on PS2 holding 60 fps the 99% of the time. Bouts of slowdown can occur in areas saturated with particles, but in general, it holds its 60 fps target very well. It's an incredibly smooth game.

MGS3, on the other hand, generally ran at 30 fps. Cutscenes could chop up a bit in some of the more demanding scenes (not present in this 3DS demo) but it managed to hold 30 fps during gameplay most of the time. Some of the more demanding scenes dropped but it wasn't that significant.

The 3DS version runs MUCH slower overall and features a lower level of detail on top of that. The average framerate on 3DS appears to be 20 fps rather than 30 (though this demo is smoother than some of the older footage that had been floating around). I'm also surprised at the reduction in texture quality. The 3DS has MUCH more memory than the PS2 did so I can't figure that one out.

radioheadrule83 02-16-2012 01:18 PM

Its going quite quickly for me :) and I'm downloading via my phones 3G connection

25% after two minutes

AkimbO_Arcana 02-16-2012 01:18 PM

Downoladed and launching. Excite! Just got the HD Collection two days ago and started with MGS3. So let the comparison begin...

Medalion 02-16-2012 01:19 PM

Bearing in mind, this demo is the E3 version from last year

Broken Hope 02-16-2012 01:20 PM

The demo allows you to enable the CCP.

kanugo 02-16-2012 01:21 PM
The demo allows you to enable the CCP.
Great news. This will be my second experience with it.

MarshMellow96 02-16-2012 01:24 PM

One control scheme without the CPP and it sucks.

Peff 02-16-2012 01:30 PM

Cutscene framerate is bad. BAD. Game itself is playable at least, and CCP control scheme is pretty comfortable, so there's that, but the revamped menus don't really seem that helpful.

The perfect Dark 02-16-2012 01:31 PM

LOL

Played it for only two minutes

Framerate = bad
Graphics = bad
3D = bad (hurts my eyes)
controls = bad (without CPP)

what a disappointment.

zoukka 02-16-2012 01:31 PM

Mmm it's Snake Eater alright. Trying it now and I feel that this is the last game in the universe I want to play on 3DS... well maybe after Starcraft. The 3D effect is nice and gives you a good sense on the enviroment, but the jaggies on every leaf of grass is a killer.
Dumb question: Does this have Peace Walker style gameplay complete with crouch walking, fleshed out CQC, and all the various on screen prompts/indicators or is it more a less a straight copy of MGS3 with reworked controls?
There's prone and new UI indicators for sure. Dunno about the CQC felt pretty much the same to me as the original game.

AkimbO_Arcana 02-16-2012 01:33 PM

still no 3D in first person aim mode.
3D is giving me a headache anyway :/
Never experienced this before with the 3DS...

Ragus 02-16-2012 01:35 PM

What a fucking trainwreck.

Vita version, here I come.

Mr Swine 02-16-2012 01:35 PM
LOL

Played it for only two minutes

Framerate = bad

Come on now, the frame rate isn't that bad

Peff 02-16-2012 01:35 PM

CQC works the same way as MGS3, other than using the D-pad instead of different button pressure.

Super Smash Bro 02-16-2012 01:35 PM

The only MGS I've played (for any significant amount of time) is Twin Snakes, and I loved it. Will I enjoy this?

dark10x 02-16-2012 01:37 PM
Come on now, the frame rate isn't that bad
Yes it is.

This is a game released for a console from 2000 and it looks and runs slower. The 3DS is capable hardware (as Resident Evil Revelations proves) so I find this port to be unacceptable.

Also keep in mind that the HD collection was just released for $40 which includes MGS2, 3, and Peace Walker all running at 60 fps. They're charging the same price for just MGS3 on 3DS and it looks and runs worse than any previous version. That's not cool.

If you want MGS3 on the go it's better to wait for the MGS Collection on Vita, I think.
The only MGS I've played (for any significant amount of time) is Twin Snakes, and I loved it. Will I enjoy this?
Yes! Even with its technical problems MGS3 is an absolute gem of a game. I can't recommend it enough.

zoukka 02-16-2012 01:37 PM
The only MGS I've played (for any significant amount of time) is Twin Snakes, and I loved it. Will I enjoy this?
There's a demo in the Nintendo eShop you can download.

wackojackosnose 02-16-2012 01:38 PM
still no 3D in first person aim mode.
Yeah, this is really really weird.

MarshMellow96 02-16-2012 01:43 PM

It's just so... ungainly? You need like 3 hands to play it well.

I wonder why they didn't take a leaf out of RE:R's book. This game would feel a lot better if you could use the face buttons for shooting, reloading and switching from FPS to TPS. That doesn't even cover D-pad controls..

They probably should've gone with pre-Subsistence MGS3's camera.

AkimbO_Arcana 02-16-2012 01:44 PM

The second slide pad feels good here, but reaching L and R with CPP feels nightmarish...ugh...so not comfortable.

Peff 02-16-2012 01:45 PM

Hmm, the insanely huge crosshair is bringing this into Twin Snakes territory. Proning makes it easy to avoid enemies while shooting homing tranquilizers. I guess that's why they took out the garish uniforms from PW, so that the challenge is more in actually spotting the enemies.

Spiffy_1st 02-16-2012 01:45 PM

Oh nice, I like having reasons to turn my 3DS on.

Luigiv 02-16-2012 01:51 PM
Yeah, this is really really weird.
It's an intentional, artistic choice. Just think about it, it makes perfect sense.
You can't aim down the sight of a gun with both eyes open.
kanugo 02-16-2012 01:52 PM

So, what are we missing that EDGE saw in this game to give it 8/10?
