Is Retro working on Tropical Freeze really that unwanted?
I've noticed since E3 that people are upset that Retro is making Donkey Kong Country yet again. I understand that people were hoping they'd make something like a new Metroid, Startropics or even Zelda, but Retro seems content making Donkey Kong Country. I also understand it's another platformer being released in a sea of them, but hey, it's predecessor was one of the best on the Wii so what's so bad about getting more of the same?
What confuses me the most about it is that always would hear about how people missed the series after Rare had been bought out. Lots of fans wished (myself included) that Nintendo would bring back Donkey Kong Country. So it confuses me that Retro making a sequel to Returns is unwanted. I feel like It might have a little bit to do with not having a Metroid game in a few years. I think it's just going to take Nintendo time to find the right developer for it, just like it took years for them to find the right one for Donkey Kong again. What do you think GAF? Are you excited for Tropical Freeze or do you wish Retro made something else? In my opinion, it's my most anticipated Wii U game. |
If the game is good, I want it. Simple as that.
|
I want it.
|
I'm excited. I'm hoping for a third one as well for a new "trilogy". Just wish they were all on one console like the SNES versions.
|
People that don't want an amazing game are mad about it.
|
I love Donkey Kong and Retro wanted to make another. So I shall play another. And I will love it and have it forever.
|
I'm looking forward to it, especially if it's good. Never played a ton of DKCR since my Wii was kind of unused, so I'm looking forward to this.
|
I want it but I feel that they could have worked on it later since platformers are pretty abundant on the Wii U.
|
After all the silence and teasing...yeah Fucking Donkey Kong was a let down.
|
I'm gonna get it. Still wish it was a Metroid Prime game though.
|
Sadly it seems to be, at least here on GAF. I cannot wait for it. It was supposed to come out tomorrow originally :(

I kinda hope one day Retro gets expanded so they could on both series. |
I liked Returns more than the old games, so I can't say I'm not excited.
Just disappointed. These guys made Metroid Prime. And then stuck with it maybe a bit too long. I really want to see the next thing they do. It certainly doesn't help that action platformers have been a bit oversaturated for a few years. There's too much to play even if you limit yourself to the best ones. If they're gonna do a platformer, I'd like to see them try their hand that the Mario 64 style that Rare never really succeeded at. |
Personally I've never enjoyed any DK game aside from Jungle Beat and I think Retro is one of the most talented studios in the industry so to me it feels like a waste but considering how many DK fans loved the one they did, I'm sure it makes sense.
|
It's like someone brought me two pieces of pie one after the other, and they were both pumpkin. I like pumpkin, and I'll gladly eat it, but I was hoping for a piece from a different pie to mix things up.
|
Because we just got a Donkey Kong game on 3DS.
|
It's not unwanted, there are just more wanted games.
|
Yes, I didnt like the first one that much and it seems very redundant as part of a line-up of 5 or so first party platformers.

It wasn't what I was expecting after a year of complete silence, but I'll definitely still buy and enjoy it no matter what.
A good game is a good game. |
It does nothing to excite me, unfortunately. Metroid would
|
Retro did what they wanted to do. And that is 100 times better than being forced into something. And it actually shows that they matured from years ago when Nintendo had to hold their hands so they don't run in front of a bus. Let's just hope their next game will be something mind blowing.

Retro didn't say a word so you can't really fault them. And all we got from Nintendo was Reggie saying they were working on a fantastic project. |
I think people are over it at this point. Game will probably be fantastic, like the first.
Was still hoping for Metroid Prime though. |
Donkey Kong had his 15 minutes in the snes days.
|
I would like another fucking Donkey Kong after this fucking Donkey Kong. Donkey Kong is fucking awesome!
|
I am incredibly excited for this game. David Wise is back which only makes it even better.
|
They probably have another project on the backburner. I'm more than fine with DKC for now.
If they return to Metroid, I really hope that it's far more evolved from the Prime games. Prime 4 would be a real step backwards. |

Seeing the devs that made Metroid Prime be wasted on a solid but otherwise unimpressive platformer was a disappointment with DKCR, so yeah it was a disappointment to learn they were making another.
The only DKC game I've ever thought was really good though was the first. |
it's like watching beethoven shit out moonlight sonatas.
you know what i mean, they can do more. |
I'm glad that Tropical Freeze exists and I'm sure it'll be good, but learning that it was Retro's "big project" was a bit of a let-down. Maybe it'll surprise me and exceed expectations like 3D World, but...
Eh. I kind of just want it to come out so Retro can move on to something more ambitious. |
I totally want it.
Also, all the crying's gotta stop at some point. When you realize that DKC sold pretty well and the Prime series got 3 full games, it's ok to let them continue to make something that's doing really well for the company. |

What's wrong with Donkey Kong? |
Donkey Kong had his 15 minutes in the snes days.
Oh and ya'know, the arcades and all. Donkey Kong as a series is legendary. Also, I think we'll get a Metroid game again in the future. Not sure if it'll be from Retro since a lot of the Prime team is gone, but it definitely won't be Team Ninja. I can dream of a future where Retro makes DK and 2D Metroid games. |
Donkey Kong Country Returns is one of my favorite platformers of all time. I was pretty happy when I found out Retro was working on a sequel.
|
Not unwanted, just tactically a waste of resources on the part of Nintendo.
What Nintendo needs right now is a title to get people to give them a second look. As arguably their most prominent Western dev team, Retro was the most likely candidate to give Nintendo that big, AAA, exclusive game that appeals to fans of Western game design. Retro could have created a game that made Nintendo relevant to the current gaming atmosphere. Instead, Nintendo put them on yet another colorful platformer -- a genre the Wii U is already drowning in, and yet isn't really benefiting from. Don't get me wrong, the game will most likely be great, but a more "on-trend" style game from Retro would have likely been great, too, and would have done a lot more for Nintendo long-term. In that sense, Tropical Freeze is a complete waste. |
I'd rather they work on a Donkey Kong game than another Metroid Prime. That's not even a tough choice.
But I think I'd rather they worked on a new IP entirely. |
DCKR2 is not surprising or exciting to me, but if Retro is big enough to have something else up their sleeves, it won't matter as much. But as of right now, I don't feel DCKR2 is the right move given the Wii U's line-up. There are so many platformers on the Wii U, and Retro is one of the 2nd parties that could really make a splash with something different, something more mature, the way they did with Metroid Prime on the Gamecube.
When you consider the possibilities, I don't see how anyone isn't at least a little disappointed that this is what Retro is working on. |
I love DKC, personally. I'll take whatever I can get from that studio. :P
|
I dunno. I felt that overall, DKCR wasn't very good. Some of it came down to controls (although, you can fix this with a cheat on a hacked wii). Even the 3DS version had less than ideal controls. Basically, I want the old SNES control scheme back, and I'd be a happy camper.
I'm know I'm in the vast minority, but as a DKC 1-3 fan, DKCR did little to interest me. It tickled a few nostalgic itches, but there are periods of the game that seem so repetitive. Boss battles are overly long and terrible, and are just a pain to play. Not to mention, DKCR relys on an overuse of platforms in the later stages for difficulty, and it just becomes increasingly unfun. If they can fix those gripes in the new installment, I'll check it out. |

It's fucking Retro working on fucking Donkey Kong again.
|
OP asks "what's so bad about getting more of the same"
I play games almost exclusively to have novel experiences. So more of the same is impossible to get excited about. |
too soon maybe. I surely hope it doesnt become a trend (DK games from retro)
will enjoy as a rental, as the last one. |
I'm more upset about the name "Tropical Freeze"...It's terrible.

And DKC without the waggle controls sounds glorious. I'll admit that Nintendo needs a western oriented game, and Retro could do the job. |
I've played and loved all of the Metroid Prime games and while I played and loved the original DKC years ago, I have yet to play Retro's take on the series. I'm sure it great, but I'm just not as interested in it as I am the Prime series. That being said, I've been following Tropical Freeze a bit and will likely pick it up at some point, but I do hope Retro gets back to Metroid at some point in the future.
|
I just wanted a mix of games to play, you know? Doesn't have to be action, doesn't have to be Metroid, but... new stuff. A myriad.
A plethora. And yes, I know what a plethora is. |
