there's also a new version of the old video in the official site
http://mmv.co.jp/special/game/wii/arcrise/ -> gallery

and i found some new info about the game in other boards, from one of the recent nintendo power magazines

- Team making game composed of TOS' game designer, cg director, scenario writer, main battle programmer and other people from TOS.
- The game will have Tales-like optional Skits, opened by pressing 2 button
- Weapons used in battle get level ups
- Their abilities pop off in form of geometric pieces-think tetris. Trade pieces among party or put em tetris style into frames of future weapons.
- Magical abilities are based on each character's 'cage' ,they can be leveled in special shops and fit with gems allowing casting of various elemental spells.
- Game has a brisk pacing-30 house long.
Sidequests-guild, casino. Casino has minigames that'll use ir/motion sensing capabilities of the Wii.
Characters- NP only did the first four characters that were revealed a long time ago.
L'arc Bright Lagoon- mc, merc supports sick mom, and lecherous uncle.
Ryfia-mystery girl
Alphonse 'Arth' Zena Meridia- meridia prince, older bro is the king, L'arc's friend
Adelle Nevanlina- childhood friend/neighbor of L'arc, magic teacher

wah, i HATE Skits >____>

The beauty of skits is that they're optional.
but some of them contains a lot of good info about many elements of the setting.. some of them. other ones are just pain. 70% of ToS skits were TERRIBLE <.<

How can someone hate skits? They make characters so much more likeable <3

Sounds good. Summer release in Europe would be sweet, though I doubt it.
I don't think RSG pans to release ARF in 09. It seems there "big titles" this year are going to be Little King's Story, Rune Factory Frontier and Muramasa - they already do something like marketing ("something like" because their actual marketing is non-existent) for these games, but haven't lost a word about Arc Rise at all (besides the announcement that they are going to publish it in 2009 or 2010).

I hate extensive story being in video games at all and still love skits. :/ How can anyone possibly--

--oh. So you hate bad writing and like good writing. Sure, that's granted, but it applies to a lot more than just skits. It's not their inherent flaw.

Edit:
Okay, at first I held back on commenting, but I keep looking at the pictures and I can't hold back--that grass texture looks like it was ripped straight out of a PS1 game and does an amazing disservice to the actual good-looking areas like the caves. Seeing how many ToS staffers are on the project, I sure hope it isn't like ToS in the sense of having a lot of dungeons in grassy areas.

Skits were the best part of Dawn of the New World.

I am finding it hard to believe DotNW sold 500k outside Japan without being released in Europe.

Where is the source for DotNW's WW sales?

And when is it coming to PAL anyway?

I liking how this looks, but i have to say i hope they nail the framerate. it seems to be way below standards in the footage released so far.

and YAY for Kizuna seemingly still alive.

Wow really??? I got the impression that it bombed (the bad worth of mouth was the nail on the coffin for it)alongside the XBOX one.
Where did you find this??

well, i didn't say that bad writing is applied only to the skits =P there are things even worser :lol
ToS was the worst case i saw by the tales i played anyway, but other skits like ToA or ToV or ToS2 are good
it's just that i don't like them, i'd prefer to see all the good contents in normal cutscenes dialogues, than that way :D

btw the trailer on the official site convinced me that the game was downgraded .-.

He's obviously talking about Tales of Symphonia GC:

"Tales of Symphonia did fairly well domestically in Japan with 300,000 [units sold]. And abroad, we had 500,000. We're not looking for a million-selling title."

Key part of the quote: And abroad, we had 500,000.

Hint: He worked on TOS GC.

He doesn't expect ARF to reach a million of sales so ImageEpoch don't need to put the game on a more prominent hardcore console (360/PS3). The TOS number is just an example to imply that even in a more "casual" fanbase the game should sell enough for them because RPGs aren't big sellers

"And, as you said, Wii is more of a casual gamer platform compared to the Xbox 360 and PS3, but for example, Tales of Symphonia did fairly well domestically in Japan with 300,000 [units sold]. And abroad, we had 500,000. We're not looking for a million-selling title.

At the same time, if [a core title like that] goes to XBox 360 or PS3, there's always a company that's been making those kinds of games, like tri-Ace. We didn't see that it was necessary to compete going into that market."

I think he's referring to ToS as well although I wouldn't call it obvious...

It's pretty obvious.

- He doesn't work for Namco anymore
- He cites one of "his" games to illustrate his point (TOS)
- TOS2 is not one of his games
- TOS GC sold ~300k in Japan
- TOS2 hasn't sold 300k in Japan
- If TOS2 had sold 500k in America in a month and half we should have known that for sure at this point

It's obvious because he was working at Tales Studio at the time of ToS' release, not now. ToS GC sold 300k in Japan, DotNW sold about 200k. There's no way DotNW did 500k overseas either, because it didn't even chart on NPD. It doesn't take much to add it up, and it's really obvious.

Edit: Beaten, lol.

I would assume that would be worldwide, and that's only an estimate.

But is this site reliable? Perhaps not if it's not talked about that much here...

uhh, that's a prediction market. Kinda like the stock market but for various other events like politics and such. However, in this case its a bunch of forumers like us, who know nothing, trading virtual dollars on what they think a game will sell. But because there is no way of knowing what it actually sold that entire site is useless even as a prediction market.

Oh and have I mentioned that its comprised of a bunch of gamers who know absolutely nothing?

EDIT: The more I read, the more that website is facepalm worthy. They are doing everything you are not suppose to do in a prediction market. Whoo boy.

500k still wouldn't exactly match up to Symphonia GC outside Japan... last we had leaked NPD figures it was over 400k in the US alone... though maybe it was 500k pre-Player's Choice release.

I do think they're talking Symphonia though, and I thought Namco released shipment figures awhile back that put it over 800k ww even? Someone should be able to dig those up pretty easy...

Something looks off about this game, like the characters aren't lit at all.

Gameplay wise it looks solid enough but it's just really weird looking. Can't say I like the character designs at all either.

Will still check it out when it comes out though.

What would the difference be if they were in cutscenes? I'm seriously trying to understand here. The same information would come through and it would take up just as much of your time, but instead of getting character portraits you'd just see the character models standing around and probably looking the same as they always do.

No I agree. The initial screens we got were fantastic but some of these shots are just...off. Like, the lighting is really quite flat, and some of the texturing (in particular throughout the overworld sections) is pretty ordinary.

I'm hoping it'll all come together though. It's just nice to see a full-fledged RPG on the system - DOTNW was too, but I think we can agree it was a disappointment after TOS. I'm hoping this will turn out a lot better.

Haven't been following this game at all but based on the screens I have to ask:

Is there any chance of this Tales ripoff actually being good? :lol

Note: To seriously answer your ignorant question, yes. It also has a chance of being bad, but the game isn't out yet so who knows?

World Destruction gave me quite a bit of faith in Image Epoch. I really hope Arc Rise Fantasia is good, too.

Oh, that last scenario is hideous. The battle system keeps my interest though. Btw I dont see any resemblance to tales at all. What are you talking about?
Also, that makes me miss Baten Kaitos quite a lot and I have the highest hopes for Kizuna, fingers crossed.

Dennis Dyack, is that you?

On topic: I've never even heard of this game until now, but (with the exception of the interlacing) it looks like it could turn out well. Will be on the lookout.

I'm hoping for good things.

Although I can't say I'm in love with the character designs (too skinny and elongated for the most part), plus, just as others were complaining about, the lighting is very flat.

On the other hand, I was looking at the website trying to figure out how many playable characters there would be, and it looks like possibly 10! (unless some of those characters are actually enemies...) Woo! I love having choice! Please let me be able to kick otu the main characters if I want to!

It's most certainly even higher than 1m ww.
They talked the last time about the sales of ToS in an interview with 1UP about ToS: DotNW.

1UP: Of all the Tales games currently available, why did you choose Symphonia for a sequel?

Tsutomu Gouda: It was also the case that Symphonia, being a GC game, was a natural fit to work with on the Wii when we decided to make a title for that platform. The original didn't come out in Europe [**TRANSLATORS NOTE: Actually the GC version did**], but we produced a total of 1.6 million copies for North America and Japan, including the PS2 port.

http://www.1up.com/do/previewPage?cId=3167417&p=44

The PS2 version of ToS sold round about 400k at it's initial release. I don't know how much re-releases sold, though.

Lighting still looks horrible in the new screens; which is a shame considering the liberal use of colors. This could've been a real looker.

Still, can't wait to at least try out a jrpg with solid effort put behind it, but I'm not getting my hopes up. This gen has seen the shittiest the genre has been for consoles in quite a long time (which depresses me to no end, as it's also my favorite).

I played Arc Rise Fantasia using the Classic Controller. Do you plan to implement motion control too?

Hideyuki Mizutani, Operating Officer at Marvelous Entertainment: For the game you can use the Classic Controller, Gamecube controller, and Nunchuck/Wii remote. But, we don’t really utilize the capability of swinging it since we were thinking of a traditional RPG where you sit down and enjoy it for a long period of time.

sigh. why is it that the pointer is so grossly underutilized in genres that seem such a custom-fit for this kind of interface (inventory management, combat targetting...). i'm starting to get that console-port-to-pc rage for games that were *designed for wii*. it's like they're designed for the ps2 or the classic controller.

i suppose that i should be glad that they didn't make the obviously ill-conceived decision to map attack to twitching the remote?

for all it's faults, at least opoona had an interface that gained some benefit from the wii control setup.

To be honest, I am glad they are not adhocking things to do with the pointer. For me, I wouldn't want to do inventory management or combat targetting with the pointer, it would actually be more awkward and slower.

Some games are best to be left to using standard controls. An action RPG is more suited in using the motiona abilities of the Wiimote. But it sounds like they are staying more traditional with this (turn-based combat) so I am glad to hear that.

I don't know, I feel like it's missing a few things. Like lightning/shadowing and decent interlacing. Now the graphics look a little flat and that's a shame, since it's really colourful and the design is decent. It would have looked great if they made it look like that klonoa remake on the wii. I will forgive them if the gameplay is really good.

Making skits into cutscenes would be a waste of time and resources because, if it's anything like in ToS, they'll be hundreds of skits

Same here, and it's my least favorite generation because of it. Hopefully this and Dragon Quest 10 will pave the way for more traditional RPGs.
