Whoops! Been a long day. Can't believe I missed that. :lol

Ignore my post then.

Yea...I'm a PS3/Wii guy, I love my PS3 XD.

Was just saying how MS wasn't a hardware company really and don't have a great expertise with it, though they're great w/ coding...their OS/Xbox Live, etc. Sony isn't that great in that department, though they've been in hardware forever. They need to play to their strengths.

I actually had no idea that the PS2's could. I just happened to accidentally do it with the PS3

Gamers can't read game instruction manuals, much less the console manuals which have more pages and fewer pictures. :p

Which gives me a brilliant idea! Console Strategy guides! Yes, for the hardware, Protip: The PS logo can be rotated!

What I find disappointing in all these debates on price cut is that people are discussing what is good for Sony's finances and Sony's business. Yet no one is talking about or pressuring Sony to focus on improving the XMB on the console; to provide more game orientated features, to make the PSN more complete

Most of the updates released for the end-user has been focused on general media (video and pictures) and whilst its cool to have a new GUI for having a photo slideshow, thats not what we want. It was only recent that they gave us the ability to actually send and read messages without quitting the game entirely and it took them long enough to actually give us access to the XMB. In-game voice communication is something they're "looking at it", but have been since the launch of the console, and I don't know how they'll even implement game invites. They finally gave us Trophies but are still working on a way to show them. Even third party websites have been faster with that. And what about Home? I recently read an article interview from a Sony Europe employee that only 25% of those who originally used it when it was released have returned more than once. Yet I remember that E3 2007 demo by Phil Harrison that literally revived the concept; allowing gamers to gather and start games directly into the lobby. The only thing that can do that now is Warhawk.

Sorry for the mini-rant, but there are bigger and more important things people should be talking about and asking for instead of feeling anxious at how much money a company has made.

- I agree universal voice-chat should be provided asap, no excuses
- Trophies are mandatory and you can view yours/friends on the website, what's the problem?
- I really don't see the need for cross-game invites, since all games worth a damn have "join friends" option. Seriously, it's a total non-feature
- Just forget about Home. Anyway, no other console has this so anything that comes out of it can only be a bonus

Sure, there's always room for improvement, but it's no way near as bad as you're making out.

We've had in-game XMB for over a year now. That's hardly recent.

As for in-game voice chat, I think they're saving that and other goodies for 3.0, which I think they'll launch simultaneously with the Slim.

I think Sony is trying to fire on all fronts this holiday season, between price cuts, the Slim, GT5 (which I do think will hit this year lol), and 3.0. I have a feeling they have quite a few things in-store for 3.0, seeing as it's been a year since the last major update (in-game XMB after E308). I doubt they've only been working on voice chat and decreasing ram consumption for a year now. Even the clock hasn't been fixed yet. I think they're saving most things for 3.0, and the updates they've released these past few months were only released to make more ram available to devs (like 2.8).

This holiday season is the last chance Sony has to get back in the game. They'll be doing their best to reinvent the ps3's image.

thing is , even if Sony put everything in the world and more features into the XMB , it's pure useless when people don't buy PS3s in first place .

the most important thing now is the price cut .

Well at the end of the day if you guys are happy with what it has/does then I should just F off. I bought mine in May 2007 after their press conferences, I saw a lot of stuff that I liked but that image didn't become reality, and so I evaluated its worth a few months ago and sold it off getting a 360 instead. The 360 is by far not perfect, but for me what it does have in terms of its features (and Live) is better than anything else. I had a lot of great friends on my PS3 Friends List and I just want similar gaming features and improvements of PSN for them.

P.S. I just hope Sony include a cheap BT headset in whatever new SKU they release.

dude, no need to argue, there will always be something to find that can be improved, its always the same.

Some features are not added because of OS memory limitations. It took Sony a while to implement in-game XMB because XMB features used up too much memory. Once Sony was able to compress and refine the software to use up less memory, the in-game XMB was able to work. However, cross-game chat may be held back for one of the three reasons:
-Not enough available memory yet to make it happen (I know there's still some OS memory issues since some games that use up quite a bit of RAM can have issues when you try sending a friend a message in-game). If PS3 did come with more RAM in the first place, this would not have been an issue (360 doesn't have too big of a RAM issue since its all unified (not split like PS3), and MS is a software company afterall and could get the OS memory down to using around 20MB). There's plenty of articles out there about the OS memory issues the people who work on the PS3 OS had to deal with. While the PS3 OS memory has come way down since launch, it still uses more memory than the 360.
-I could be wrong, but I believe the 360 had memory reserved just for the voicechat, which made it possible for cross-game chat. This was planned right from the get go. On PS3, it was never planned, which might make it harder to fit in right now.
-There could be various patents out there (MS owns a ton related to the 360 console, such as one that will play a custom soundtrack in any game) that may complicate implementing the feature.

That's why I'm honestly not going to complain about features which may use up a lot of memory not being implemented, because PS3 just doesn't have that much RAM (a big mistake when planning PS3).

Cross-game invites can never fully be utilized though. MS had them planned in the 360 way before the console was released. They basically came up with standard online features, which every game had to implement. Sony on the other hand may have many of the same features, but they give developers pieces to work with. Since they never created a standard set of features every game had to interface with online from the get go, that's why it will never happen (because just by adding cross-game invites doesn't mean an older game like CoD4 will suddenly have them. A developer would have to patch their game to make it work, but most developers aren't willing to add features to games released over a year ago). PS4 may have them right from the get go.

As for game launching in Home, you are a little behind on news there, since more games have it now. But the thing is, adding game launching just isn't going to make every game work (since many games are a closed project). Only way to make it work is for a developer to patch an old game. Since many of the tools for game launching weren't made to developers until maybe a year ago, games would need a patch to work with it. Most developers have moved onto new projects, and would rather not spend the time/budget implementing the feature (It's out of Sony's control). It's the same reason why you will never see cross-game invites working for every single game, mostly because older games would have to be patched even if it was standard.

As for the slim, I do believe its coming, but I'm not going to assume any price point since we just don't know what will happen.

Anyone else a PS3 owner that is just basically happy to play online for free like I did with my PC? While I like my 360 better for XBL standardized features, I'm mostly just someone who wants to jump into an online game and play. I'm not always getting a huge load of friends together for online. I'll take the time to see who's online, message 1-2 of them before I launch, and see if they want to play. It's just not a deal breaker at all for me that Sony hasn't caught up to MS with some of these firmware features.

You ask someone who doesn't own a PS3 and 360, and they're not going back and forth about the latest NXE features and that sort of thing for the most part. They look at Gears 2 and cost of the 360, and go for it based mostly on that IMO.

Sony was just 100k away from 360 sales this past quarter. In terms of building their user base, all they really need is a PC of some kind. The slim and firmware 3.0 will just be icing on the cake. Sony doesn't owe me anything for firmware. I bought it at launch because I could just get online and play like I did on my PC. They've done a hell of a lot in the last 4 years compared to the amount of time MS has been chipping away at Live. I still say Live is the better service for sure, but it's just not a sour point for me when I look at my PS3.

Hardpressed to know, a feature like this isn't exactly the kinda thing people would abuse though. The Amazon help area mentions customers who ordered there recently and 'are in good standing with the Amazon community' so I guess it's pretty open.
