I thought it was definitely worth paying the dozen euro or so to go inside, too. Make sure you see the Pantheon, too. Rome is such a beautiful city.

Always fun to see these landmarks from angles other than the standard "beauty shots". Yes, I understand that they exist in the real world and that means that they have mass around them, it's just that you don't often get to see that part unless you travel there. That might be because the first picture is the superior Canadian side and the second picture is the shitty US side. The Canadian side pretty much looks the same as pictures.
Remember, pictures taken with a shit camera look a lot smaller than what you perceive with your real eyes.

That Pizza Hut rooftop terrace has one of the best views in the world. You can also catch the (shitty) sound and light show for free.

You think of this right? Surrounded by desert, exotic, far away from anything. It's not about it being a 'shitty perspective' as another poster said. But the reality of what these places look like isn't the same as what the photos portray..
Pretty much every description of the magnificence of the pyramids relies on referencing the fact that they dwarf and tower over modern day Cairo. Unless reading that, people think Cairo is at a far remove but nonetheless used as a point of reference, I don't see the problem.
I've seen countless photos of the pyramids from a similar perspective to the one posted by the OP.

Egypt, I was expecting a bit more space between the pyramids and city lufe. I guess you would think that having modern civilization right next to it would be a detriment to these historic wonders.

Mount Rushmore isn't that small, it's pretty far away from where your allowed to go in the park. Still enjoyed my time there and the hiking I did at some of the trails.

That's the Canadian side, it's much nicer than the US side. I used to live like 5 mins from the falls.
The big curved building with the shiny building behind it is a indian casino, it's about the only thing of note on our side.
At the bottom of the falls is a power planet that was run by Tesla, that's kinda cool.

Isn't that also covered up for maintainence? The Spanish steps as well, and the Colosseum as the other guy complained about before. A lot fashion houses sponsored fixing up being done in recent years, but Rome still looked great.

Other than a few that are indeed "ouch" (Taj Mahal and uh... little else), I find that most of the zoomed out pics to look even more awe-inspiring. The pics for Niagara Falls, the Parthenon, Mount Rushmore, Arc de Triomphe, Santorini and Paris all look amazing and jaw-dropping. So, this page has the reverse effect, lol.
I've actually been to the Acropolis, and if anything, the second pic makes it look cooler than it is. The reality is that it's just incredibly crowded and not very fun to traverse. The experience is somewhat similar to this post, I'd guess.
Another example would be Jerusalem. An international wonder, full of history and great architecture and culture, right? Well, sure, but it's also filled with more shitty tourist shops selling the tackiest possible souvenirs (including Jesus's crown of thorns and a mock rock t-shirt imitating the Guns N Roses logo saying "Guns n Moses", among others) than I thought possible. I mean I'm not usually that annoyed by overly touristy crap but Jerusalem was something else. Still enjoyed the city, but damn, guys...

Interesting. I've want to go to Italy for a long time, but I never thought my health would be better there. For my perpetually clogged sinuses, Ecuador was the best country in the world. Wwhether it was the Galapagos, Quito, or the rainforest along the Napo river, I didn't sneeze at all the whole time... so amazing, when I sneeze daily everywhere else because of my allergies.

If you guys want amazing sites that are still preserved from the taint of crappy modern architecture, I suggest you visit Bruges. Absolutely gorgeous city, compact enough to be walked around on foot and see most of it, and they have municipal laws to protect the heritage and prevent shit like a McDonalds next to a nice historical facade. Ghent is also beautiful but doesn't have those laws IIRC so you might see some of it, but Bruges is a true jewel.
Also, the Galapagos, of course.
