The Earnings Report Thread (Fiscal Year 2010)

For those wondering, a few other significant publishers -- most notably Ubisoft -- cannot be listed because they do not offer quarterly income statements. They only offer revenue statements per quarter, and net income annually.

Thanks.

Koei Tecmo Holdings was founded on 1st April, 2009 (to those who are interested).

Net Income: $ - 1,046,306 (¥ - 102,000,000)

Take 2's last reporting should be used. They don't report on the same quarterly shifts as everyone else: they filed their report in June.

Their total for the quarter was (10.08), giving a total of (60.468) for the year thus far. All figures in millions.

Hmm, I think we should use their next quarter because May, June & July would fit better in that "Apr - Jun 09" system. :)

You can see why Nintendo's stock has gone down. They went from 2 Billion to 4.3 billion in a year. And who knows where they end up this generation. I don't think the ending position will change but if Nintendo continues on w/o price dropping on the Wii, they'll limit there growth.

Nintendo made more money during the Gamecube years than Sony did with the PS2?

Am I reading these numbers right?

Yes. They're extremely smart cookies when it comes to making money.

(Remember though, it wasn't just the gamecube which was selling at the time)

Great work, Psychotext!

Yes. Of course, the GBA most likely had something to do with it.

Edit: beaten.

Wow Sony is dragging it downward. It appears non Japanese based companies are doing quite well though

EDIT: On second thought that is not entirely true. EA, Disney, and Microsoft, oUCH!

Thank you SalesGAFfers who keep us updated with the numbers.
And special thanks for updating the year to year numbers, Psychotext! I thought you'd give up on that : D.

Nintendo really knows their games, respect.

This guy wonders if EA may be stuffing the channel a little bit to boost their revenues:

According to EA's fiscal announcement for the first quarter, the publisher sold 3.7 million units of The Sims 3 and 1.8 million of EA Sports Active for Wii. But according to Signal Hill analyst Todd Greenwald, these figures are sell-in numbers (meaning sold into retail) and the gap between the sell-in numbers and the sales reported by tracking firms like NPD is "concerning."

"While EA’s Q1 sales of Sims 3 and many of its Wii titles were certainly impressive, we are concerned by the discrepancies between the sell-in numbers and the NPD sell-through numbers (which only capture US). For example, Sims 3 sell-through was about 820k units in June, vs. 3.7M units of sell-in. While Europe may have added 1M units, that still leaves a big gap. Similarly, EA Sports Active sold through 635k units in May and June, vs EA’s sell-in of 1.8M units," he stated.

Greenwald also questioned the strength of the EA Sports business, pointing to current NCAA weakness as a "canary in [the] coal mine."

"Management acknowledged that initial sales of NCAA Football have been weaker than expected thus far. To us, this highlights a big potential weakness for EA over the balance of the year," he said. "Given the tough retail environment, weak sell-through, and sluggish hardware sales, we believe sales of 'catalog' content (i.e. sports, music, undifferentiated sequels, etc) are at significant risk. Titles that aren’t significantly different from a year ago are likely to suffer large YoY declines and will see price cuts quickly, in our opinion. Following the weakness of NCAA, we believe that Madden sales could be down at least 5% YoY, especially considering last year’s 20th anniversary comp, and we fear this could be followed by weak sales for Need for Speed, NBA Live, FIFA, and others."

I really hope Sony pull through these losses and make of their money back.

It sucks to see this happening to them after producing such a fantastic 1st party lineup thus far this gen....

It seems it's this time of year again: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=377783

Microsoft EaDD seems to be back in the black again with a $312 million profit this quarter.

Though since their first quarter was rather bad it seems they're at $182 million profit for the year.

----

As a side note, does anyone know when the other companies are reporting? I saw that Capcom is reporting on October 30th, but haven't seen anyone else.

On the subject in general, it's a shame that I can't seem to find financial reports for Sony prior to 1998. Would have been nice to get their full set of data in there since the start of the Playstation business.

Where are you getting your data?

Sonny's annual report for 1998 (page 73), has these operating income figures (billion yens) for the "game" segment:
Code:

1997 57.045

Thanks. I have the 1998 data already, but I don't have the 1997 and 1996 data.

Ideally I'd like to try and find the quarterly reports for those years (it's how the rest of the data is done) so that I can get the most accurate (regarding currency fluctuations) figures.

I see. I asked where you were getting because I didn't know if you had already seen those and discarded for some reason I wouldn't know.

Since no one seems to care about Sega, I'll try to put their results in the neat formatting:

...and a handy note suggested by Stumpokapow:

The years in the chart above refer to the financial years of each company, which do not align on a calendar basis.

Microsoft is one quarter behind Sony and Nintendo on that chart. They will be the first to report their 2010 calendar Q1 earnings (Jan - Mar), which they report as their 2010 Q3 financial figures. Nintendo and Sony just reported their 2010 calendar Q3 earnings (Oct - Dec), which they report as their 2010 Q3 financial figures.
...and another:

These numbers are the operating income figures for all companies, rather than the net income.
...and another:

As of FY 2010 Q1, Sony are now reporting the results for the re-organised division "Networked Products & Services" rather than the old method of reporting for the gaming division.

"Sony said it will combine its VAIO personal-computer, Walkman and PlayStation businesses in the Networked Products & Services Group to focus on creating gadgets that can work with each other and connect to the Internet."
