Finally, a game on the PS3 for 2011
Yeah, what that game needed was to come out next year, just as much as TM:Black needed it's 2001 release. Strategic masterminds over there at Sony HQ.

Would be a nice summer title so long as it doesn't conflict with InFamous 2 or SOCOM.

Would probably be better if it slipped to 2012 though.

With the way SOCOM 4 looks right now I wouldn't be too worried about it hurting Twisted Metal.

It's not like this game will light up the sales charts anyways. I just hope it sells enough to turn a profit.

I don't like that this game has characters sharing the same vehicles (sweetooth on motorbike and van). I want classic Twisted Metal characters with their own vehicles. I know they did this so they can create teams for online multiplayer, but they could have easily had a coloured cursor around a vehicle so people can tell who's on who's team.

Out with the fam at Panda Express. Sweet! Does this mean our little Twisted game is gonna be a hit?!?!

The ancient Chinese fortune-tellers at Panda Express think the game will be a success. I wonder if they could predict the release date for us?

TM w/ 2011 release date=good for gamers=bad for sales. Sorry Jaffe :(

Perhaps. Hard to say. My gut tells me TM will do well. But it's very logical to assume it's never going to be HALO or COD and that's fine. It was not designed to be/was not greenlit to be/and was not budgeted to be. It's not a budget title AT ALL but it's not something that anyone feels is going to do 5+ million in sales at full price either.

That said, I think the game is going to be fucking fantastic and will serve as a launching pad to reintro the franchise to the world. I think our core fans will be very happy and new fans that are interested in the concept will pick it up and- we feel- be very, very happy. Also, if we hit with a T, I think we'll get younger players (who dig the cars and guns combo) and I think once word begins to leak that the game is meaty deep and crazy fun in both local split screen and via online (online split screen as well), we'll start to bring in brand new fans who in the past would never have given us a look. I think as the PS3 market matures and more mainstream gamers hop on board, I also think we have a chance to appeal to a decent sized segment of that crowd...kind of like ATV OFFROAD FURY did back on the PS2...gamers but not hard core gamers who only want the 99% rated meta games and who read neogaf).

At least that is the hope/battle plan. But end of the day, all we can really do is make the best game we can and let the chips fall where they may. On a game like Twisted, no matter how good, bad, or amazing it is, there is a % of peeps who are NEVER going to embrace the core concept and we knew that when we greenlit this new title. I like what someone said on a forum tonight (forget where): Not all games need to be designed to appeal to EVERYONE and back in the day, there was much more variety on the shelves than there is today and that was a good thing. So the hope is we can find our people/find our tribe and treat them like the Gods they are. We take care of them and they'll take care of us. Again, that's the hope. We'll see :)...

Cool.

I've been clamoring for a new Twisted Metal since the launch of PS3, so this is good news. Still, I wasn't exactly thrilled by the direction they seem to be taking it in based off of the E3 demo, but it's way early to make any serious judgement.

hope to see more soon

Nice. Have you and your marketing chaps worked out a way to get more EU players on board? If there is a PS3 price cut before Twisted Metal ships, it might be wise to get it bundled with a PS3 over here. The Twisted Metal fans will buy the game stand alone, and the new PS3 owners will get a chance to become acquainted with the franchise.

Also, how many games have you got left with your SCEA agreement? :)

Cheers.

I know that you've mentioned it before, but I do not think that Twisted Metal Black's "M" rating hampered sales.

Probably the top two best selling games this gen (Call of Duty and GTA4) have "M" ratings.

I kind of wish your Twisted Metal was a bit grittier and went for that M rating, but I respect the direction you're taking the game and your E3 reveal showed much promise.

I think it's a very unfortunate release year, but assuming there isn't a Wipeout in the pipeline for next year, they only have MS3 which is first quarter.

Next year has the most impressive line up this generation right now (plus the 3DS launch of course), but in terms of driving/arena combat, there isn't really anything on the horizon I can think of.

With LBP2's slipping, this November would have been a great time had it been ready.

My understanding is the plan IS to ship it in Europe. I have not heard the marketing plans for America, let alone Europe however. I assume we'll be doing some focus testing over there and if they go well, the SCEE folks may decide to promote it in a stronger way than they did some of the previous TM games.

I hope we can build a strong TM net community with the European TM fans and get some good word of mouth going. Also eager to see how this game will do in South America and Australia as I got it stuck in my mind that the game seems like it may really appeal to those cultural sensibilities. Am I high?

Here's some news from an issue of OPM a few months back

- 2 player co-op through the campaign. Online and offline
- 2-4 player offline multiplayer.
- 2 player splitscreen online play for up to 16 players in total.

To preface, I will be buying your game day one, I have loved the Twisted Metal series dating back to Twisted Metal 2 on my PS1. Great memories from playing your games as a kid!

Back on topic though, you do have some logical thought put into all of the points you made. One thing I would add that could help you out is that there is not much competition in regards to the genre Twisted Metal is in. Car combat games have seemed to elude this generation and the few games that have been focused on that were mediocre at best, Activision's Blood Bath most recently.

I like that you are putting a focus on sharing the experience of playing Twisted Metal with more than 1 person. Things such as split-screen, either online or local are both very important to me, and are hard to come by on the PS3, so kudos to make sure that some of your resources went towards that. BTW, is it vertical or horizontal split-screen?

Jaffe,

is Twisted Metal PS3 going to have a campaign with unlockables?

I know you had a discussion about this on one of your vlogs, but you were still undecided about the meta aspects of the game.

I don't think there's a car combat crowd that's itching for another game in that genre.

The only games like TM this generation I can think of have been Full Auto & Blur, and neither of them sold well. But I think any commercial success TM has will be down to good reviews and very very very good marketing. I don't think that long term TM fans will make up more than 20% of the sales.

I hope so. You could probably do a really stylish TV ad with Twisted Metal over here. We are into creepy, strange or artistic advertisements. Kevin Butler would do an excellent job of promoting it in the US, but you could really take the marketing to a whole new level in the EU. I mean Sweet Tooth is a fucking clown who can set his head on fire and likes driving around in a creepy Ice Cream van. I mean this one for example advertised fucking chocolate.

You could also play up how fun it is to play with friends in the ads. Nintendo does this with their advertisements. Twisted could do this in a more mature 'Holy Shit' kind of way.

If you manage the online community well, I can see it being the highest selling Twisted Metal in those regions for sure. The Warhawk approach would work wonders. Couple that with a regular blog, video documentarys etc and people would really get into it. Mix up the online here and there to keep things fresh etc.

PS+ Beta would get the buzz out there too.

I think sales will highly depend on the meta game, and whether or not the multiplayer has lots of unlockables to go along with very good core gameplay.

TM will do just fine regardless of what quarter of 2011 it actually releases in. It's a Playstation legacy franchise and it has instant brand recognition with consumers. Not to mention, it's only the strongest brand in it's genre. Hell, just today I had a guy at the store asking me what system he is going to need to play the new Twisted Metal. But enough about sales, I hope we get a beta for this one. I'm pretty psyched about getting behind the wheel of the ice cream truck again :D

Twisted Metal
Developed by Eat Sleep Play
Published by Sony Computer Entertainment America
Designed by Dave Jaffe and Scott Campbell
Format: Bluray Disc
Release Date: Spring 2011

Controls
Left Stick - Steering Right Stick - Camera Control Dpad - Advanced Attack shortcuts.

Square - Accelerate (2x Turbo) Circle - Brake X - Power Slide Triangle - ?
L1/R1 - Weapon Cycle L1+R1 - Jump L3+R3 - Detonate Remote Bomb
L2 - Driver/Passenger Shoots Secondary Gun R2 - Fire Weapon

Basic Information

- The premise is much different then previous Twisted Metal games. The game itself is mainly multiplayer-focused, including both and new modes. The single player will feature three different campaigns with four of the classic drivers featured in live-action movies: Sweet Tooth, Preacher, Mr. Grimm, and Dollface.
- The game features 16 selectable vehicles
- The game features 4 player split-screen offline, 16 players online (2 player split-screen online)
- The game will run under 60 FPS
- The game will support 1080p
- No getting OUT of vehicles
- Large levels with big draw distances. World is interactive and destructible. More levels where the environment destruction changes the map completely, such as the Eiffel Tower in Paris.
- DLC will become available sometime during 2011
- Online gameplay MAY include a leveling system and/or perks (unconfirmed)

Single Player
- The game will include a single player mode that has three different campaigns. Each campaign will have three difficulty settings, and each difficulty results in a different ending. After each win, the player is rewarded with a live action movie. There are nine end movies in total, and they tell the story of four characters: Sweet Tooth, Preacher, Mr Grimm, and Dollface.
- Calypso is still a "Watch what you wish for type guy", but is NOT TMB's version of Calypso. Calypso has hair and is colorful like TM2.
- The single player (story mode) game will not feature gunners, only one-person vehicles
- The driver stories will still be "dark and twisted"
- "This new 1p will be more varied than ANY TM 1p in the past. We are not abandoning 1p." - Jaffe

Multiplayer (Offline)
- Split screen offline is available with up to 4 players (Deathmatch only)
- Co-op is available in TWO PLAYER split screen
- Rumored to have Challenge Modes and Endurance Modes, but unconfirmed

Multiplayer (Online)
- The main portion of the game relies on this aspect. This is the first TM store release to feature online play as the helm of the series, instead of stories. The newest portion of the online game is Twisted Metal: NUKE, the new team game designed around Team Deathmatch meets Capture the Flag
- Other modes include Team DM and Free For All
- Scoring based on Kills, Net Kills, Carnage, or Net Carnage
- Nuke mode pins two teams/factions against each other. The object of the game is to kidnap the opponents team leader and bring him back to your base so you can launch a missle to destroy the opposing team's leader statue. Whomever destroys the other faction's statue first wins the game. The team leader is an NPC
- NUKE mode has Four different "gangs", the Clowns led by Sweet Tooth, the Dolls led by Dollface, the Skulls led by Mr. Grimm, and the Holy Men, led by Preacher.
- In NUKE, you can switch vehicles while respawning or suicide to change cars on the fly
- At any particular time in NUKE mode, only one player per team can be Talon for balance purposes
- AI traffic in the online games to block weapons and cause mayhem
- Will support either 2 player split screen online

Gameplay
- Developers aiming for two specials per car
- Target Reticle makes its first appearance
- Ramming is back like previous Twisted Metals (prior to Black). Ramming damage is based on car types, velocity, and point of impact. Developers are trying to have flying debris and flipping cars on huge T-Bone rams. There is a sixaxis attack while ramming for extra damage.
- Passengers in the vehicle with drivers. The driver/passenger can use a 9mm pistol for drivebys (instead of the car mounted machine guns). The driver can pick up new passenger pickups to upgrade the passenger's weapon. Upgrades include a shotgun and a sniper rifle. The sniper functions like the TMB Reticle and you must maintain the opponent in the reticle while holding R2. A headshot on a driver will kill it instantly. The sniper reticle charges faster when immobile
- Power Slide from Warhawk makes it's debut. Has a Black feel to it but feels original.
- Health Stations are mobile vehicles, and are limited by map size. They are moving platforms with a TM1-style ramp. Once up the ramp, your health is replenished and the ramp closes itself
- More flunctuation on balancing, not just the basic Speed/Armor/Damage stats but each car will other statistics that make him/her stand out from other vehicles including Weapon Bay limit, machine gun overheat time, and AA recharge time.
- NO Unlimited Weapons options
- Host will be able to set up custom options for custom rules
- Freezing the air vehicles will be possible, dropping them to the ground for damage and opening them up for a RAM combo
- No damage penalty for smashing into walls

In-Depth Character List
Sweet Tooth - No longer the paper bag loving clown of the past. This Sweet Tooth is a true serial killer. I would wonder why he is entering this year's contest but I already know it's probably more for the murders then the prize itself.
Preacher - The Preacher is a very religious man that will stop at nothing in order to spread the "good" word.
Mr. Grimm - This Grimm has the largest overhaul. Instead of a supernatural Grimm Reaper we all have become accustomed to, this version of Grimm is a sorrow filled man. They are making him a weak, vulnerable person to give the Grimm character his first weakness, being human. His father died at a young age and rumor has it he wants to win the contest to have a better relationship with him.
Dollface - This Dollface character is also a lot different from her TMB counterpart. This Dollface unlike the older, shows her face off quite a bit. In fact, she is a world class model obsessed with beauty and being beautiful. No word on why she wears the mask yet...but her last name is Sparks...so that is interesting enough, isn't it? ISN'T IT?

Vehicle and Special Weapon List
Death Warrant - Sportscar with Zoomy missles
JunkYard Dog - Tow Truck. Special is a health pickup that repair vehicles. Secondary spawns a taxi on the Tow Truck hook, which can be thrown forward for damaging enemies. The taxi cab can also bounce off of walls for strategic shots
MeatWagon - Ambulance, the back doors open and shoot hospital gurney with a patient strapped to it. The catch? The patient is a Jihad and has a remote bomb in his hand. The patient gurney can either be homing or player-controlled
Sweet Tooth (name pending) - Ice Cream truck, transforms into Mecha Sweet Tooth
Shadow - A TM classic hearse. The hearse has the classic "Shadow Bomb" special that can pass through walls and detonate at the player's whim
Reaper - Motorcycle. The driver carries a chainsaw when the special is activated. Popping a wheelie causes the driver to drag the chainsaw on the ground behind him, catching the blades on fire and allowing the chainsaw to do 3x regular damage.
Roadboat - Large junkcar with Sonic Wave/Magnet Emitter. Attach enemies to the front bumper to use as a battering ram or launch them forward by repulsion. Secondary special also turns the Emitter horizontal and functions as a ricochet
Talon - Helicopter with Hanging Magnet special. Talon also has a FPS-like turret gun
Vermin - Exterminator van with an Exterminator missle. The missle can be homing or player controlled. The missle can also slow down mid-air and change directions for target switching

Note- There are other "transportation" vehicles or "helper" vehicles not yet announced that will help the cars out in the way that Talon can help out his teammates. Jaffe has confirmed there will be other air vehicles, but most likely post launch as DLC. Talon will be the ONLY air vehicle included at launch.

Levels
Slaughterdale - "Huge level with TMB Suburbs/Drive-In Setting" -Pj
Chase - Huge, linear level with a long stretch of highway that makes a large loop. There is a desert surrounding the highway, but at this point it is undrivable. It also appears to be the longest linear level in the history of Twisted Metal battlegrounds.
Rooftop (name pending) - Twisted Metal wouldn't be Twisted Metal without a rooftop level, would it? This rooftop level has many little moments for TM fanboys. The TM1 rooftop Pyramid atrium makes its return twice, and even the TM2 rooftop swimming pool can be found at the bottom of one of the falls. De ja vu? The rooftop edges are also rounded and pointing downward/upward for battling off of different rooftops. There is a large loop track on the outside edge of the map, and a figure 8 track in the very middle. The VERY center of the map spins in a circle like a restaurant in Vegas, and the developers promise more ramps and passageways between roofs then ever before.
Canals - Found during level select screen of the ComiCon press feed. Perhaps a revision of TM1's famous level.
Suburb Boss - Placemat title name discovered at ComiCon level select.
Stadium - Another staple in Twisted Metal games since the first one.
Theme Park - Another revision of which is easily the best of the Twisted Metal Lost levels. Discovered at ComiCon.

Weapon and Damage List
Fire Missle - 12 points Homing Missle - 9 points Power Missle - X points Homing Power Missle - X points Ricochet - X points
Remote Bomb - X points Napalm - X points Gas Can - X points Satelite - X points Shotgun - ~30 points
Sniper - 9 points to the body Freeze - 1 point Land Mine - X points Chainsaw - ~43 points Ramming - up to 21 w/cars, up to 39 w/Talon

...Work in Progress...

I hope not. I honestly think a visceral yet humourously violent game would be more appealing. Kids end up getting games no matter what the rating anyway.

It'll do well in South America...if it's marketed there.

Black was the only game in the series that wasn't T rated, and the cutscenes were really the only reason that it received a M rating. From a gameplay standpoint it wasn't any different from the rest of the series.

I don't think an M rating will hurt it. I don't think a T will either though.

So ultimately I think the game should include the content Jaffe wants it to include.

Twisted Metal 2 was Teen and I think I was about 9 when I played it. I also played Duke Nukem around the same time, which was a hard M.

I have to say Twisted Metal felt very dark for a game made in 1996 or so, rating aside. I expect the same from the new game.

Preacher's not associated with a mask like those other three characters... hope he wears something cool like [IF YOU ARE DAVID JAFFE STOP READING THIS BECAUSE IT MIGHT BE AN IDEA AND IF YOU IMPLEMENT IT I MIGHT SUE YOU FOR EVERY DOLLAR YOU'VE GOT!!!!!] a crown of thorns or something.

Had high hopes for this, but the videos shown made it look like calling all cars 2: now with blood and gores! Loved TM2 and Black.
