Nintendo:3rd Quarter Financial Results Briefing - Presentation by the President

This is the sales transitions of home consoles in the European market.Except for in the U.K., Xbox 360 has a weak presence throughout Europe.Wii sales rose sharply to the top in the 43rd week, which is when we released the red Wii hardware. The sales pace picked up even more speed during the year-end sales season. As I mentioned earlier, unlike in the U.S.,PS3 sells better than Xbox 360 in Europe. The only European country which has a relatively similar sales trend to the U.S. is the U.K.
33l.jpg

Some notes:

- The PS3 sold about 100,000 units per week during October 2010.In contrast,PS3 averaged 62,500 per week in the U.S. according to October 2010 NPD
- PS3 sales remained almost flat during the last quarter compared with the same period a year ago until Sony released Gran Turismo 5 (Week 47)
- December 2010 was the best month ever for PS3 hardware sales.Weekly PS3 sales peaked at 300,000 units, setting a new record in December

A potential pricecut later on this year (PS3) combined with the excellent exclusive software could do alot for them.

There is a small error in the 360 numbers. The LTD should be 50.8 million.

Looking at the MSFT Q2 thread the error is in FY 2008/2009. It adds up to 11.1 and not 11.2. Unless there is some rounding going on, then you should just ignore this post.

Sorry to jump to the crass question, but did the PS3 outsell the 360 in 2010? I know about regional disparities etc., but I thought Kinect would have erased that preference in Europe especially.

Including the PS2

Seriously though, has Sony ever been outsold (in a calendar year) in total consoles sold?

Yes, PS3 outsold 360 WW 2010. But Kinect was launched in November...

Are those LTD numbers right? PS2 over 150 million, PSP over 70 million (what a failure!). And again, PS2 won't die.

canova said:
So PS3 didn't lose or gain any ground in term of gap with 360, right?

That's correct, though with all the Kinect and Xbox 360 slim hype, I thought for sure the 360 would outsell it this past quarter.

It's too bad there's no way to cash in with software on all of those new PS2's.

They're still putting out select first party titles for it, aren't they? Like that baseball game.

It's a bigger mega bomba than the Apple Pippin, because the competition sold a lot more. It's just how these things work.

PS2 is just officially launching in places like Brazil etc. Products that are long-obsolete in the developed world can often find markets elsewhere.

And PSP software sales aren't so rosy.

PSP had people interested for 3 years before a sharp drop. Software sales are failed. Total hardware units sold might be the best handheld results not from Nintendo, but is it really a success? Do people want a console experience? Sony should remember this for NGP which looks ominously like PSP round 2....

I think it's the only move they can make. The bit-size gaming experience on a handheld will ultimately be owned by the smartphone market and with the higher production cost for the system, I'm not sure the 3DS will be immune to this takeover.

Some people do want the console experience, which is why Nintendo is releasing Ocarina of Time and Kid Icarus on 3DS.

Others want a different kind of experience from a handheld, which is why half the games Sony announced so far are just that.

PSP only sold 3.6M from Oct-Dec?

hmm I thought it would be more with Monster Hunter 3 in Japan

US is lucky to have sold 900K of that 3.6 so Japan certainly made up the bulk

People are still buying PS2 games.

Yeah, but I'm sure they're losing sales to Gamestop as well. The hardware is selling remarkably well compared to the PSP, but the PSP is selling more than twice the amount of software.

True. You would think, good games would be released on the PS2. There are only new iterations of Madden, NBA 2k, etc..

yeah seems Sony took the best shots (slim, reach, kinect launch)

We'll have to see how the momentum from those shots carries through, but they've held on all right. The quarters after this will tell the tale. Microsoft managing to tie them for WW shipments in the latest quarter is pretty big.

Parmenides you always mix unit sales with production shipments even though we have actual unit sales LTDs through various PRs from Sony.

Unit sales LTD:

PS3: 47.9m
PSP: 67.8m
PS2: 149.7m

Software LTD:

PS3: 408.2m
PSP: 287.7m
PS2: >1526m

Isn't it a little be disingenuous for Sony to keep using the totality PS2 numbers all these later? Its easy to say you have 1UP'ed the competition doing this.

canova said:
yup, especially Europe, since JPN PS3 number is actually down from the year before

Go us, remeber that next time sony and dont try to take our eyes out at launch again. £429 still rubs me the wrong way to this day.

They also give you the individual numbers. I don't see what is the problem.

pretty sure the investors care that sony is getting money for nothing with the PS2.

Woow im impressed, i actually thought 360 would outsell it in dec and nov because of kinect and how well 360 sold in the states, but i guess playstation is bigger in japan and europe.
Man i can see them beating that 15 million if they come with a price cut and show all of the games in ads they have coming out this year. I mean sony has a like a big exclusive every month, april even has 2 i think socom and motorstorm.

Man i hope playstation stays big in europe.

EDIT: are there actual numbers how much sony makes on every ps2 sold, cuz i think thats like how they make most of their money right now, 6 million consoles with profit, and i think the psp is selling at a profit as well right?

How does this information contribute to another Valkyria Chronicles on the PS3?
I think it would be bleak. Assuming it got sent to the PSP because of sales/budget and PSP software doesn't sell.

I think Wipeout and Twisted Metal are the only Sony games that have dug themselves out of the main entry portable ghetto.

Yea, but the states is only one country, and it is not Sony's biggest market, even though it is Microsoft's.

Just kinda telling that extrapolating too much from the NPD threads is kinda pointless.

Software this year should be good to Sony too, as many of their biggest guns are coming out. I expect a price cut this year too which will keep the hardware sales up.

NPS did pretty well pulling in $564 million this quarter. I wonder how much that is attributable to the games business.
