ULTROS!

People seem to like me because I am polite and I am rarely late. I like to eat ice cream and I really enjoy a nice pair of slacks.
Hmmm... Atlus is shipping 130k/40k for PS3/360 Catherine right?

I wonder if they'll get another shipment. I'm under the impression that this game is quite hyped (top ranking in the most anticipated games in the Famitsu mag).

TLS for all purposes is still one of the top3 sellers for the company along with Blue Dragon & Lost Odyssey. All 3 of their DS games bombed HARD.

If they sell 160k at the end of the day, that's not too bad for an rpg dev these days. Just means they don't have the finances to do PS3/X360 games though. But they could probably still churn out a Wii game ever 1-2 years if they felt like it and make profit.

If they're going to stick to Wii though, they should definitely stay away from the realistic LO design style and go with a more cell-shaded/cartoon style that looks good on Wii.

isnt the development of LO, Blue Dragon as well as Last Story funded entirely by Microsoft and Nintendo though ? I believe it was a pure profit deal for all three deals. Im sure Gooch will go on and make some HD games if MS or Sony was interested in him.

With the sorry state of the Final Fantasy franchise, one of the big 3 should just orchestrate a re-union with SE for at least one game to do a Gooch styled FF once again.

The franchise has completely spun out of control.

A lot of people who left for XIV came crawling back to XI, which is experiencing a revival of sorts.

Edit: I still have my XIV sub since its free to play atm.

10. / 03. [PSP] My Little Sister Can't Be This Cute Portable (Bandai Namco) {2011.01.27} - 11.721 / 100.214 (-87%)

Is this game as creepy as the title makes it sound?

Yes it is.

Not really. Just watch the anime and join the dark side...

I'm not sure why everyone is shocked. How is a 80% drop off in the second week unusual for heavily front loaded core titles?

Titanic was called the Ship of Dreams, and it was. It really was.
Ever since Nintendo stopped dominating these charts, they've been quite boring. I'll never forget 2005/2006 when the DS owned everything after all that naysaying. Good times.

Chris - what's the deal with the posters? It seems that one is advertising the 3DS for 32,000 yen and the other for 27,000 yen, but I'm not sure what the point is.

The 3DS is supposed to be 25,000 yen, isn't it? So are these retailers offering it for a huge premium? And if so, is it down to shortages/demand, or is there something else going on?

Probably because they're still playing the last case.

It's the buyback price (of an unused 3DS) that some stores in Japan are offering.

Really? Jesus - 7,000 yen over the "proper" price? How on Earth do they intend to profit from that unless they're going to start selling it for 35,000 or so?

So TLS sold basically no Wiis and bombed. Well, I guess it has to have met Nintendo's sales expectations (kinda) because of the small first shipment, but still. JRPGs on home consoles are slowly dying in Japan, it seems.

To be fair, the game seems mad low budget like most Nintendo published games (Nintendo outsource budgets = something like 1/4th an AAA PS2 game budget imo), so it'd probably break even at 80k and anything over a 100k is pure profit. I doubt Nintendo really cares other than being in no rush to fund another venture.

Xenoblade is the more iffy one on if it made any money, since the Xeno team was working on it for 3 years before release. Then again it sure did better than other Monolith Soft Nintendo produced games by a longshot, so Nintendo was probably happy their sales are improving.

I thought last week number for TLS was high? Is it supply constrained or do people just not give a shit?

AAI2 doing less than the previous one isn't surprising, to be honest. AAI2 just wasn't up to the quality set by the first three mainline AA games.

Also, did TLS get a restock? If so, how big?

John Harker

Definitely doesn't make things up as he goes along.
Wait, what budgets does Mistwalker have? Since when were they a development studio?
Maybe I missed that, but isn't Mistwalker still a design consultancy firm?

Their budget is entirely dependent on what publisher contracts them.
They have arrangements to work with preferred developers, but they can technically work with any dev as a consultant or any dev a publisher contracts, and the budget would come from the studio or the publisher, depending on who hires them. It's actually not a bad model for them as they have much less risk and overhead, just their reputation and pass success, as well as Gooch's ability to sell his services for another project.

That said, if it doesn't work that way, it should :)

TLS seems low budget? I thought the opposite. Especially considering the extraordinary advert campaign it got here. a press conference complete with commercials for said conference and in-store displays three months before release for starters. Then there's the very awesome pre-order bonuses too.

What were the sales for Soma Bringer? I thought that game reached 180,000+, though I'm probably mistaken.

I have flashbacks lately. When Nintendo announced Q3 results they showed that DS has shipped more hardware than GB.

GB/GBC - 32,47M
DS - 32,60M

This Really make no difference in the big boy leagues of sale but it's a fun example: Scribblenautsis sold out an amazon.co.jp and due to the amount of time it takes to restock ds games, the next shipment from amazon isn't for another month.

scribblenauts!

Advertising budget was definitely far far higher than money put into selling Xenoblade or S&P2 of most non-first party Nintendo game, sure.

As to the game budget...we'll just have to disagree. I've been playing about 20 jrpgs a year on all systems over the last decade and to me from a graphical, content, q&a and overall polish perspective it feels like a low budget game, like say a PS2 launch rpg with real effort put into it similar to Shadow Hearts 1 with more budget. Otoh Xenoblade, despite it's flat fruit, had the feel of a medium to high budget production with the amount of assets, locations, cutscenes, and overall polish. I'd wager the XB budget was about the same as a Xenosaga entry.

Well, this pretty much gives Namco Bandai and other jrpg developers a signal that the Wii is pretty much done for(although I suspected that they've made the decision way before the TLS's performance was revealed).

Guess now they'll focus mainly on PS3, PSP, 3DS and the NGP at this point.

They're actually buying them for those prices. They're anticipating massive shortages it seems.
