New Max Payne 3 article/info/shots in EDGE

I found scans, so I won't link to it, but there's a big article on MP3 in EDGE magazine with lots of great shots. A lot of the shots (some art) show Max with hair, tie, New York (maybe), all that jazz.

First bit: McCaffrey IS returning - thanks ZombieFred (sorry about earlier mistake), plus he gets to full on act with the other actors, like in Uncharted or Dead Space mocap sessions.

-Vancouver, London, Toronto, and New England R* studios are all cooperating on this title.

-Max is working for some guy named Rodrigo Branco in Sao Paulo, and for his two brothers, a politician and a "party-loving dropout".

-The story will be a bit non-linear, description of Max in Brazil with a full head of hair at a money drop for a kidnapping. Seems the story will go back and forward in time, possibly in New York, his early time in Brazil, and him in the gutter, bald later on.

- In the stadium/kidnapping mission, Max is partnered with a guy named Passos.

-The comic style panels return, sorta. Here's how it's described: Now instead of comic book frames, these dramatic plot pointers use the in-game engine and show an animated collage of action footage, similar to 24.

-Multiple set piece encounters, including a Mona-style sniper rifle escort bit.

-They did a lot of Mocap for this game. Lots of animations and stuff, apparently looks quite impressive.

-Bullet time is charged by killing enemies. BT is very detailed.

-Max can hold three single handed weapons at once and dual wield two different weapons at the same time.

-Pop out and shoot cover mechanic as well besides BT and Shoot-dodge.

-Uses Euphoria, which is awesome. Very natural animations for Max and his enemies.

-Wheel-based weapon selection system.

-Inner Circle may return - some plot threads from previous games work their way into this sequel. Max has been expelled from NYC.

What are you on about? Max still has the same voice actor from the preivous games, the scans comfirmed it.

Still skeptical.

Since this is being made by Rockstar, does that mean it won't have a PC release?

PC version comfirmed in the article. Should be a good port now on how well GTA4 runs thanks to its updates.

Looks like the cover system is like GTA4 and not RDR/Uncharted. So shooting and popping out are on the same button, meaning a delay when you want to pull the trigger.
I hate that system.

Well, it's probably better to discuss MP3 here instead of derailing the entire Edge topic with it, although it is refreshing that an Edge topic isn't a score-bitchfest for once. :D

WTF is this, Max Payne doesn't need a cover system, period. It was all about diving through a crowd of bad guys in bullet time.

Wait, what? You can pop out in those games without having to shoot. They are mapped to different buttons.

I wouldn't worry. Considering the other thread is for Edge 227 in general, I imagine the "New news = new thread" policy applies.

Pop-out cover system :(

Akin to GTAIV and RDR? I was hoping R* would use a typical TPS combat/cover system.

Max Payne 3 and a cover system is a lose-lose situation.

Implement a cover system and get angry letters by fans of the previous entries.
Don't implement a cover system and get your game called "archaic".

I liked the comic book-esq panels. I'll wait to judge on the rest of the information till I get my copy this month.

I prefer a coversystem over a run & gun gameplay. That stuff belongs to the nineties.

Edit: And thumbs up for Euphoria, finally a real shooter game that uses it

GTA4 also has a pop-out button (aim button, like all the others), but it only sticks your head out of cover. When you shoot, you first have to wait for the actual body to step out of cover.. useless. I don't use cover in the GTA4 games.

Re: the pop out cover system, it seems that they want it there as an option... Bullet time and shoot-dodge is still there, which again, an option for however you wanna play. I think.

All this info actually has me super excited. McCaffrey's back! That little bit from the script sounds good, something like "I may have written the book on dumb ideas, but Passo loves to quote from it." or something.

These two better still be the focus of the combat.

They explicitly noted that they are still figuring things out. The control method described was the set-up for now. Shit could be tweaked in a lot of ways before E3 (if R* shows up that is)

Sounds like Stranglehold is more Max Payne than Max Payne 3.

I'm a big fan of 3rd person covershooters, but that's not what Max Payne is. Max Payne is diving through a window and clearing out a room in slow motion.

Max Payne doesn't hide behind cover, he kills everyone before they have a chance to react.

Then don't use it? Crysis 2 had a cover option, I rarely used it. Same with Killzone 3. It's nice to have options.

It was definitley worth holding this game back IMO. That initial reveal (in 2009?) had me very disappointed.
Knowing McCaffrey is back and after reading some of the scans, I'm quite excited for it.

4 Rockstar studios working on the game? I'm not sure i like the way they emphasize 'cinematic' in the article.

Some good, some bad came out of this article. I'm definitely more optimistic about this one now.

Still sounds like some extraneous stuff has made it's way in here. :/

Things sound better! Big mistake to leak out bald max a few months back, people would not be as skeptical had they introduced familiar settings first.

Fair enough. The combat/cover system in RDR was much improved over GTAIV, so even if R* stick with that route I'm sure the gameplay won't suffer as a result.

I particularly like some of these screens... they look really good. Even Bald-Max doesn't bug me quite so much as it appears there's actual context for it. A bit ambivalent on only three weapons, though dual wielding two different weapons at once should be cool.

Yup agreed. Though I saw the left trigger is used for locking on to cover which is terrible, should be used for aiming like every other game ever. If that's not fixable in the menu then the game is going to be a chore to play.

Max Payne on those scans looks absolutely NOTHING like the old max Payne. I the title wasn't "Max Payne", I wouldn't know who that character is.

Nonetheless, this isn't that big of a deal, as long as the story and set pieces are great.

So between this and GTA5, is it even possible The Agent is in development? Supposedly it's a Rockstar North game, but I don't see how that's possible.

Stated before that I was very skepticle of this game. But as a huge Payne fan this new info has me convinced it will be worth a look, still not sold totally but very interested. PC version and original Max VA are fantastic announcements.

Looking forward to a big Rockstar prescence at this years E3.

Sounds pretty cool, enough to make me feel a little less skeptical. Really, it's all about actually seeing it in motion now. Your words are nice, now let us see the damn game son.

There is one screen in the inset where McCaffrey is mentioned in which a character that kinda resembles the MP2 Payne is shown....

...a third look? :D

those examples really aren't the same as a standard TPS cover game, where every single map is designed around it with chest-high walls facing the direction you're going.

What about the PC version? I'm not interested in this game if there's no PC version. Also, is there multiplayer (co-op?)

I guess that's why Sao Paolo is such a good location....

I am getting REALLLLY bored on your basic TPS pop-n-shoot cover mechanic. Actually GTAIV has one of my favorite ones of those, heavy enough to not making it super easy to abuse. Hopefully MP3 has one in similar fashion, making Bullet Time #1 choise of killing stuff instead of standing behind some walls.

Oh come on people, the shot of Max in his usual shirt + tie + jacket looks pretty close to what an updated Max Payne should look like. Of course the other shots look different because of hair/beard changes, but that one is pretty close.

Looks better now, but I hate the fact that they'll strip the series of it's comic sequences. I mean, this has been one of the unique parts of Max Payne. I am very dissapoint....

Dude, what are you smoking? There are at least two shots of Max in his get-ups from MP2 and one of the screens looks like it takes place in his apartment complex from MP2.
