Microsoft – Entertainment and Devices Division (Home and Entertainment) through 4thd Q FY 2008 ended June 30 2008
Sony – Game division through 1st Q FY 2008 ended June 30 2008
Nintendo – Overall through 1st Q FY 2009 ended June 30 2008
.

Exchange rate for Yen is from Nintendo's Financial Results Briefings.

* -- it's fiscal year for both Microsoft and Nintendo
** -- it's FY+1 for Sony for comparison reasons

All the numbers but last year were collected by our best man sonycowboy and are from previous thread.

So we could all remember the name of the game. It's not for the love of interactive entertainment.

The most pure videogame sector here is Sony's reports.

Entertainment and Devices division includes other sectors like computer games, Zune etc. most of them are considered to be profitable. They also started losing money on Xbox before 2002 as it had to be R&D'ed and produced. Which is more than likely another billion or so.

Nintendo releases overall earnings reports – stake in pokemon + currency investments + some other minor things.

Additions, suggestions and comments are welcome.

I didn't realize MS was losing so much on the 360. I knew the Xbox wasn't a profitable venture, but I thought the 360 would take away some of that loss. Anyway, good to see Nintendo has in fact remained profitable all these years. They've done quite well in 2005-2006. Interesting that Sony numbers have been declining since 2002.

Yeah, and with that DS lite WW madness and Wii on horizon they just might hit that Sony's 1998 record. Especially if currency changes will be in their favour.

I noticed that, too. I wonder how much the PSP plays a role on the low 2005 numbers. 2004 seems interesting...I thought Sony at that point was making profit on the PS2? Why the drop at that point, that should be their most profitable year.

Heavy, heavy investments into R&D of PS3, investments into PSP and considered loses on selling of each unit.

I think Sony finally had their first price drop in 2002, so that could have cut the profits on the machine.

I don't know what the sums amount to, as I don't know the years in which the PS2 sold the most.

So MS lost more money with the Xbox360 so far then the amount of money they lost entering the market with the Xbox?

We don't have 2001 numbers. As their is no Home & Entertainment part is earnings report of that year. But it's more advanced hardware and visible marketing was bigger so i would say yes.

Only an 800 million profit? Nintendo is doomed.

^ to all the people in the world who continue to say it to this day

The thing is I don't think anyone really says that anymore in a serious manner.

BS. There's less risky stuff than the DS and the Wii if all you're after is dolla dolla bills y'all.

For Nintendo, releasing a console that is a direct competitor to the PS3/360 is more of a risk than releasing the Wii as we know it today.

And I'm not even talking about the DS' success and how it affects Wii's outlook. I'm talking about third parties and consumers accepting a third standard Nintendo console after two of them failed within 3 years and were woefully uncompetitive in library.

If it continues like this, they will destroy that 1998 record.

They are at almost 900,000,000 right now, and they have the years biggest coming. 5 biggest months coming up, right?

What the hell are Microsoft doing.

I have to agree with this

I mean again I know you need to loose some money to break into an industry but how long will they continue to bleed billions of dollars

MS is buying marketshare and mindshare.

They'll be making money by the fourth Xbox.

I wonder how much longer they will REALLY be interested in this. You have to consider that Microsoft would probably much rather be providing the software solution/network infrastructure for Sony or Nintendo than have to get tangled up in the hardware, especially with those ridiculous costs.

But they say they aren't pulling out, so I suppose they aren't.

I'm always impressed at how well Nintendo profits. They may be in last place console-wise, but they're laughing all the way to the bank.

It's a little thing called the Playstation. I hear all the kids loved it back then.

Thanks for pointing that out, but I meant what specifically led to those numbers (game-wise).

Off the top of my head

1997 - Final Fantasy 7, Crash Bandicoot 2, EA sports

1998 - MGS, Gran Turismo, EA Sports

I don't think anything they make is sold at a (significant) loss.
And when they do their software easily makes up for it. If Wii is sold at a loss Zelda/Metroid/etc... will more than make up for it.

Until they've taken over the industry.

I believe there was one quarter about a year or 2 ago where Nintendo said they lost 25 mil, which was the first time ever in like 30 years or something.

I do wish we had a breakdown by platform as well. I wanna see comparisons of N64 and GC.

N64 likely did better than Cube by a good amount but GBA did a lot better than GBC and GB(in its later years).

So I expect it to be around the pre-DS numbers.

One console future at $999 a pop...believe!

Seriously though...those MS numbers...that's amazing. When are they planning to have a profitable year, exactly?

Pretty much, I remmber their N64 software sales, atleast in the US were really insane. Despite the system not selling nearly as much as the PSone the N64 still dominated the Top 5 (probably 10) games of that generation.
