Pacman chart in the OP is awesome

could we have the Wii titles be cherries or Power Pellets so they can be picked out from DS titles?

When will the HW numbers roll out? Here's my market estimation*:

1. DS - 87 000
2. Wii - 64 000
3. PS2 - 32 000
4. PSP - 31 000
5. PS3 - 15 000
6. XBox 360 - 7 000

Sure, but it's all automatically generated based on numbers in a database, so that'll be taken care of when the new numbers are input tomorrow.

Any suggestions on a website that instructs how to setup an online database for free?

I think you got Wii and DS mixed up, and you forgot a leading "1" on the DS number.

Woah, that far off? Well, there's still VF5!

VF5 - 2/8
Gundam Musou - 3/1
Virtua Tennis 3 - 3/8
Bladestorm - 3/31

If PS3 sales are still in a slump by the end of march, the PS3 is ****ed.

So what do you expect PS3 sales look like by the end of march?...Those games (just VF5 and Gundam, actually I doubt VF5 will do much) will just make PS3 have some peaks (that most likely won't even reach Wii) and then it'll go down until the next major release. So by 3/31 week I can easily see it in the 20k-range...

Those are all games that would appeal to the Japanese market. The key to getting positive sales is not just to have one spike week a month with a big hit, but to have at least one game a week so that there's a constant sale of hardware even outside of the spikes. March is the first month where PS3 actually has a few games.

By the end of March, I'd hope PS3 is doing 30k-35k a week.

They are doing really well, actually -- it's just that the much greater success of Wii Play and Wii Sports obscures that. 400k for Zelda, 300k for Wario, 200k for Pokemon, 100k for DBZ... all that on top of two one-million sellers is quite impressive for a system that's just had about ten weeks on the market.
For comparison, here's what PS2's 10th week on the market looked like according to Famitsu. I could get a more complete picture by looking at the previous 9 weeks... but that would take looking at the previous 9 weeks.

#6, Tekken Tag Tournament, 12K, 358K total
#7, [evuagureisu]?, 12K, 87K total
#11, Ridge Racer V, 7K, 517K total
#12, Dead or Alive 2, 7K, 265K total
#13, Decisive battle (Kessen?), 7K, 285K total
#18, Golf paradise?, 5K, 105K total
#27, Fantavision, 4K, 112K total
#30, Gradius III & IV, 4K, 59K total

I can only be a partial help here. My hosting isn't free, but I did bookmark this list of free web hosts with free MySQL databases because I thought it might come in handy some day.

As for learning it, I did some SQL in class a few years ago and then refreshed myself on things using the online reference manual or searching Google when need be, so I don't have a good tutorial to point to or anything.

To flesh out the answer maybe more than you're asking, when I do things like the comparison pages I linked to earlier it's using PHP which was similar enough to other languages to get going on pretty quickly, and when I do graphs it's with JpGraph which wasn't bad to get going once I got used to pulling the right information out of the database.

An important thing to note is that even if VF5 and Gundam Musou appeal to Japanese audiences, the system still costs $499 USD.

It costs about $400 in Japan.

How much does Wii sports costs in Japan? Does it has a budget price?

Wii Sports is at 4,800 yen. Same with Wii Play.
Pokémon Battle Revolution and Wario Ware is at 5,800 yen and I think Zelda is at 6,800 yen.

I agree with you on what PS3 needs but I don't see Virtua Tennis or Bladestorm appealing to a good chunk of the Japanese market. PS3 needs something more on the lines of Minna no Golf or Gran Turismo...Gundam aside, the current PS3 lineup is just a (small) list of small bursts. There isn't even one compelling game each week to crack Top30!

I wouldn't expect a 100% guarantee on a translation of that version just due to the problems that it might cause with ultra-conservative parents. They're so far behind now that it would be better to jump right into the new Island DS game after Rune Factory is released.

? Problems? They were behind with other games and still brought out the girl version of FOMT and AWL so they darn well better bring the DS one out! >_<

glad to heard people isn't stupid anymore
Everyone, don't be erroneus neither with cooking mama or Densha de Go!

Both are going to do quite well and are going to help the casuals looking for the Wii. over 100k in second week I guess, which will be the same as VF5 and Gundam Musou. FIre Emblem will do better.

Very nice sales for DQM, Harvest Moon and Wishroom / Hotel Dusk! Oh.. and DS and Wii do great too.. of course. Interesting that NSMB will most likely become the best selling handheld Mario game ever in Japan. Incredible. It will be interesting to see how Super Paper Mario and Super Mario Galaxy perform.

Btw, excellent opening post indeed.

OK guys, yet another comparison thing I've made. This one IS generic, so basically any combination of systems/time periods/settings I could put into a line graph, I can put into this. Here's what I was using for testing purposes The columns don't explain themselves very well, but let's look at row 3 for an example. That tells us that after 3 weeks, Wii was at 544K. Go over to the GCN area, and it tells us that GCN hit that point at 13.18 weeks, or December 10, 2001. Go over further, and it tells us PS3 hit that point at 9.65 weeks, or Januayr 11, 2007. So on and so forth.
