44 games in the released part, 36 games in the future part. Last months participation wasnt the hottest, probably due to the all-overshadowing Next Gen console launch. Hopefully we are back to form in december with more impressions and more voters!

We will also have a vote on the best games of the month in the last week of the thread. The results for june can be seen below. For some first time readers that wonder about my definition of "recent": We didnt have any major Indie thread in 2012 on GAF, so we are also catching all the titles that slipped through our net last year.

Addtionally, there will be an end of the year voting starting mid-december. Check back in the thread if you are interested.

Anyway, have fun with the games from this month!

Hey! I assume you are new in this thread series and want to see what we were up to? Or you didnt have enough time to play through all of the games from the last month but still want to catch up with the best ones? Then this list is for YOU! These were the games we enjoyed the most in the previous thread, voted on by the community (More thorough descriptions and impressions in the previous thread, especially the last few pages with the voting):

The Stanley Parable (7 votes) - Free Demo/ $14,99 (PC)
dcxQz8e.png

http://store.steampowered.com/app/221910/

It's officially a "first person exploration" game developed by Galactic Cafe with brilliant narration by Kevin Brighting. I would describe it as a narrative experiment. Not everyone will enjoy this game -- in particular, logical and emotional types. It's a suitably meta experience that parodies many video game tropes and for the sheer quality definitely deserves this spot.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Beyond Perception (4 votes) - Free Prototype Demo (PC, Mac, Linux)
LFC2grQ.jpg
http://www.indiedb.com/games/beyond-perception
First Person Puzzle where you're in an art gallery and can explore inside the paints and solve mainly based perspective puzzles. Paying attention to the pictures before going inside them is useful because they have some tips in how to solve the puzzles.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

Cave! Cave! Deus Videt (4 votes) - Free Prototype (PC, Mac, Linux)
2bxcies.jpg

http://cargocollective.com/wearemuesli/CAVE-CAVE-DEUS-VIDET

It's a visual novel and a very unique one. It deals with Bosch's Triptych of the Temptation of St. Anthony and .. that's all I can say about it.

Fakteur (3 votes) - Free (PC)
AwQv8lr.png

http://fakteur.com/wordpress/en/

Charming artstyle, interesting NPC's with good backstories and the ability to change the fate of their lives. Game of The Month and likely to be in my list of best of the year.

Paradis Perdus (3 Votes) - Free Alpha (PC, Mac, Linux)

I noticed there are a few noteworthy, and relatively unknown, projects that deserve a shoutout here because I feel that they share a common interest with the people in this thread. I talked to the guy from Pixabyte and MetaVendetta and both are very enthusiastic about the things they love and figured you might appreciate the shoutout as well. If you enjoy anything here or want to give feedback, let these guys know via their websites or also here in this thread. If you appreciate something, let people know. A heads up can sometimes very valuable.

Thanks for the work on the thread, Touma.

Fixed, thanks.

We know about Starbound for ages already, didnt I already include that in one of the last 10 threads? If not, not that bad either though :p I doubt that this thread would help spreading the word about Starbound since people here likely know about its upcoming release anyway. Will include it in the release list next month.

I dont know that series

In other news, the Arakion Alpha 1 starts tomorrow and I'm in it! So I guess it does actually exist! Unless the download tomorrow just leads to a blank screen or something.

Yeah but the game's actually finally releasing this week (at least that's the last I read). I think that's reason enough to add it

Hey Toma, thanks for including One Way Heroics in the list!

I really hope gaffers check out the game. BudokaiMR2 put his blood sweat and tears into the game over a period of 11 months to get it localized. Initial localization was only a couple months, but we've been testing it and refining the script since then. It's insanely hard to test as well, since so much of the game is randomized, and there's a buttload of loot in the game.

It's only $1.99! If you like JRPGs and the constant threat of death, check it out!

It's also got a ton of content, much of which is hidden. I worked mostly on editing for the game, so the majority of the work was done by Budokai. That said, having worked on the game both in a QA and editing capacity, I would say I know the breadth of the game fairly well. Most people that have been streaming it think they're done with it, and have only seen 10% of what's in the game.

Fancy Skulls is the next feature on IndieGameStand

Highly recommended. I'll repost my impressions here:
Between Paranautical Activity, Tower of Guns, and Fancy Skulls, it seems like the roguelike first person shooter is in vogue right now. While Paranautical Activity and Tower of Guns embrace over-the-top white-knuckle mayhem, Fancy Skulls stands out due to its abstract style and measured, more strategic gameplay.

The first aspect that stands out is the game's surreal visuals. Activate one of its randomized rooms and deformed multi-eyed...things emerge from their spawn points to attack: flying projectile-firing skulls, red-clawed melee chargers, bomb-spewing white stalks that aimlessly lurch around, spindly cyclopean turrets, and more. Every new enemy adds a new learning curve: what does it do, how doe it move, does it move or is it stationary, and most importantly, where is its weak point. Every enemy has a weak point somewhere on its body, some obvious, some more concealed or only visible at certain intervals; one or shots in this vulnerable area will kill an enemy and this element, combined with your limited ammo, totally alters the pacing compared to other FPS roguelikes. While in other games, you can fire wildly at enemies, here you'll survive longer by making your shots count and taking the time to aim carefully.

Further adding to Fancy Skull's strategic gameplay are the items and upgrades you can acquire. Like the enemies, you won't know what an item will do until you use it. From allowing you to hover and double jump to performing a fiery melee slam to slowing time, items are varied and completely change your strategy. Items require mana to use, so you can't spam these special abilities. Weapon upgrades can be bought from vendors found on each floor and imbue your guns with game changing abilities such as fire or explosive rounds to making ammo not count while airborne. The game's seven weapons range from your starting revolver to a shotgun and raygun to a rocket launcher and each feels different. (And yes you can rocket-jump.) You can only carry four guns at a time so choose wisely.

Fancy Skulls combines the FPS roguelike genre with mystery, strategy, and minimalist visuals.

Was recently updated with new enemies, new items, new room layouts, etc.

Edit: also changed mana to a recharging meter. I preferred the original set up but this works as well

So are we going to try and maintain Wayback Wednesday this month? Or is it better to shift it to Make-Up Monday, Throwback Thursday, or Flashback Friday?

I would like to give some feedback on my last-minute votes from the previous month:
  • Cave! Cave! Deus Videt: a very strange game, in which you will learn a few things. It feels too educational in the end.
  • Cubicity: the controls are awkward, but the game mechanics are smartly used (magnetism, gravity, portals, etc.)
  • Chrono Disfunglement: you can rewind time for the the wole universe or for just one object. The game design is too simple but the game mechanic is interesting.
  • Temple of the Water God: Aquaria made by Digipen.
  • The Stanley Parable: a meta-game.
  • Whispers of the Goddess: a puzzle game at its finest. The visuals are a bit too simple though. However, every time you finish a level, the music and the visuals are very rewarding.

I have to say, I left it more confused than anything else. Didn't get the "educational" vibe at all. I hope the team continues to work on it.

*high five* Nobody else played it, I think.

Very curious about Westerado, but I'm a sucker for westerns.

Also, has anybody been keeping up on The Last Door? I just played Chapter 2 last night.

For instance, in the Last Door. Is it bad that I want to email some of these game devs and offer to polish up the english text for them? There's not a ton of text and there are just some unnatural parts in the dialogue and such, that seem like they'd be so easily fixed.

*low high fives*

I played it too, but didnt have enough time to write about it. Pretty devious puzzle game with a mechanic I didnt see anywhere else yet. Always a plus in my book. If we had all voted for it, it would even have made the top spots, oh well.

Screenshot so people know what we are talking about:

I'd love to get a mention for Love. It's still on Greenlight, and is "95% of the way to the top 100".

We already included Love+ in the very first Indie thread back in march, sorry :(
But hey, it will always be special because it was one of the first!

Wow, One Way Heroics at $1,99 can almost be considered stealing. The game is ridiculously fun. Will throw up an OT later, hoping no one else beats me to it by then.

Its basically the roguelike-style game design school. Start a game, see how far you are going, die, learn from your mistakes and try again, all the while you pick up items, level up and prepare for the fight with the demon boss.

My first run was 45km and I died to a horde of zombies in a dungeon. For that first run I got 5 "Hero points", which I exchanged for an item slot that I can now use to carry over an item to my next run. I put my decent armor in there and started my next run with a better armor immediately and managed to destroy the monsters in the dungeon that previously killed me. I got cheeky though and have been squashed by darkness in the dungeon because I didnt get out again.

The game is really fun and deeper than I would have imagined, at least judging based on first glance. The perks and armor/weapon skills really make these items feel different and allow for certain tactics. Gotta love the details/polish as well, like not talking to the fairy and then getting snark remarks for ignoring her, the multiple world setups and even online integration (which I havent tried yet). The ability to carry over items means its not punishingly hard either and you will always see some progress.

This game is really clever.

Hear, hear.

I beat the demon king on my third run, lets see what the game offers after that and whether the other options (classes, etc) will be enough to keep me engaged.

But in the end there is still the hard mode, which probably should be considered the true challenge anyway.

Edit:

Well there is my reason to replay the game with every class.

The link for Strafeman in the OP doesn't work, as the about page has been changed. Anyway, there is an indiegogo for it.

Interesting seeing a indie rail shooter. I love the idea of the flamenco and metal soundtrack, as I'm a fan of bands like Flametal. I'd like to hear more from the soundtrack, as the music in the trailer is barely there.

I picked up the full version the other day and if you like the demo you will like it. My biggest complaints are UI-related and the dev has been doing patches to make it less clunky which is a good sign.

Edit: Looks like the game is actually on sale at IndieGameStand today for $3 in case anyone else was interested.

Release: Early 2014.

That looks sexy. It's funny how retro console aesthetics have now become their own art styles. Like how Ripple Dot Zero (penguin action game) is so Genesis it hurts.

EDIT: Finished the demo.

Nifty little mechanic of going invisible or not, reminds me of Gunpoint but this is more limited in options right now (also, seems like a tutorial). Music is fucking great.

WELP. Was playing and enjoying Fakteur, then accidentally quit and it didn't save my progress. I'll start over at some point. Very interesting concept, and I'm looking forward to seeing how it plays out over the whole game. The amount of time biking between houses started to feel a bit tedious to me, though, it'd be nice if the environment changed a little or something.

The hell is Blade Symphony?!

Reminds me of Jedi Knights.

Oh yeah, I forgot about this. Has anyone played it? It looks like it has the potential to be really cool. Wish there was a demo.

EDIT: Impressions so far:
-Paper Sorcerer (demo): Pretty cool. Clunky battle UI, but great style and fairly fun combat system. Not sure how well it'll hold up throughout the game, the demo is very short.
-Don't Move: Standard "achievements sure are dumb guys right?" game. Painfully dull, which is the point, but that doesn't make it more enjoyable. Didn't play it for long before quitting due to extreme tedium, maybe there's a twist later?
and from the best of list:
-Paradis Perdus: The anti-Proteus? The player being a detriment to the game environment is something I'd like to see explored more. Interesting experiment.
-Fakteur: See two posts above.

For an alpha, there's a nice chunk of content and game here. Some campaign missions, a bunch of challenges to complete, several sandbox-y areas to fight in and parkour around, and a randomized arena that gets progressively more difficult

You can tell this is a product that's been worked on a while (in a good way). The animations and little details are top notch (blood dripping down your body and staining your clothes is awesome), the fighting is hard hitting and so satisfying, and it's a joy to just run and jump around. You're extremely maneuverable and agile and the dynamic physics and combat is very fun.

Combat is the best part. It's very intense to be three on one, disarming one sword-wielding enemy, flinging the sword into his buddy's chest, catching a dagger in mid-air, countering an attack, stabbing that guy to death, and blasting the last guy across the area with a super kick

Outside of combat, the game runs super smooth at high. Combat is kind of laggy at the moment for me, but I just play in slow motion to appreciate the animations and other details.

Probably too expensive for some now, but I'm really enjoying it and Overgrowth is a definite recommendation whenever a sale comes or it progresses to beta, etc.

It's going into Beta at least, with indie games it can kind of be a grey area between 'open beta' and 'release' (that was certainly the case with Terraria).

Also, OP, the Starbound beta will be on Windows, Mac and Linux, according to the developers. I noticed you had "????" for platforms.
