IGN admits their pre-release Ghosts footage wasn't 1080p after all

After it was announced that the shipping version of Ghosts on PS4 was running at 720p in single player before a patch, lots of publications scrambled to explain it. IGN claimed their footage was 1080p even after many people provided evidence that suggested otherwise.

Caleb Lawson, IGN video producer, tweeted this back on November 13th:

Today, the other shoe drops: http://www.ign.com/articles/2013/12/03/call-of-duty-ghosts-next-gen-comparison

IGN mistakenly published a previous side-by-side comparison of Call of Duty: Ghosts that did not contain the full 1080p native resolution footage of the PS4 version. While IGN confirmed the display output setting on the PS4, the native resolution rendered in the game itself was not 1080p for an unknown reason. The footage was captured on non-retail, development hardware running the final build of the game. After viewing, the retail version on retail hardware, it's clear our old footage was a lower resolution. You can see this difference more clearly in this new video.

This should be fun. New video comparison at the link. (Lock if old.)

How convenient for them to wait until after the game is released to admit to this.

MS and Activision thank them for their assistance.

"Mistakenly" my ass. They should just admit to being liars.

The video editor probably knew all along, and told his supervisor after he was finished, "Oh shit, this really isn't 1080p." His supervisor went on to tell him, "Fuck it, upload it anyway."

Fuck IGN.
Fuck Polygon.
Fuck Digital Foundry.

Fuck 'em all for spreading false news to get those early hits/revenue.
You act as if they all don't have the same agenda.
And you act as if we won't all fall for it again when the next big AAA title with questionable performance disparity on Xbox One comes out.

"Oh we were mistaken. Our bad. We weren't intentionally lying. We just suck. We won't do it again. We promise."

Seriously. Almost all the gaming press as well as tech sites like The Verge and CNET really gave awful coverage of the next-gen consoles. Seriously awful. I've been thinking there has been a lot of money-hatting going on but clearly incompetence is equally to blame.

I have so many issues with how everyone handled this but the major irk is how can tech sites dismiss the 1080p vs 720p difference when these are the specs they live by when reviewing the latest smartphones and tablets?

And while I can understand the concept of reviewing the annual release of a smartphone or tablet, reviewing a day one console (especially before it's even been released to the public) is just absurd. OF COURSE Sony and Microsoft will constantly be updating their operarting system and adding new features while refining others. This is not a new process. Stop being crazy everyone.

Well gee, thanks for that timely correction there, weeks after the game is out for everyone.

Nobody fell for it. Everyone here questioned it day one. Everyone here knew something was up with it and nothing matched.

It was most definitely us questioning the legitimacy of what they're showing that made a lot of them to man up to their mistake.

IGN's video player down samples everything to 720p with heavy compression artifacts making all their comparison videos worthless as well.

IGN got their hits and Activision got their sales.
Ultimately that's all that matters.
And now IGN is getting even more hits for their apology.
Giving IGN hits for this is the very definition of FALLING FOR IT.

This apology brought to you by Xbox One.

OK, that got me....

This whole "ResolutionGate" theme is a friggen' joke and it does appear more and more staged to help MS out prior to launch.. However, we will never see the proof, so we all must just assume the games media is just that incompetent. Really really sad, who can we trust? DTA....

How did these companies exist before Microsoft entered gaming? Especially IGN. Man how far they've fallen from back when I was a fan during the N64 days leading up to the PS2 launch through the Dreamcast era.

MS cheque bounce.

Likely more reports the truth and IGN aware going on rather than look back again.

... you do know that ign said the ps4 version was much more favorably despite being the same resolution in their capture footage. if anything that would mean sony's cheque bounced... if youre gonna be a blatant console warrior do it right FFS.

We'll find out eventually, perhaps 2-3 years down the road. Either way, the gaming press has never been trust worthy. That's why videos like Giantbomb's quicklooks or livestreams are the best way to find out whether you would like the game or not. Or just follow the game, be aware who is developing it, read an interview or two with the creative director and you should be able to make a good decision.

Does not surprise me at all considering how much blatant favoritism most game sites have given MS.'

Sony PS4 reveal in Feb: "Mediocre, MS wont have to do much to beat it"

Xbox DRM Rumors - "Completely untrue! MS would never do this"

DRM Rumors confirmed - "They're not that big of a deal! Gamers will get used to them, and Sony will implement them too!"

PS4 confirms no DRM, $100 cheaper - "Well, er, uh, Xbox is still a potentially better value, still not that big a deal, uh, Titanfall?"

MS reverses DRM - "OH THANK GOD YES! You see, YOU SEE? MS does care about us!!!"

And so on...

Everyone was paid for.

By you. The fans who eat this shit up.

It was said time and time again to not pay attention to any major media outlets.

But you fell for it. Again. And again. And again.

The untruth of launch.

It is odd that there was more than one instance of patches for PS4 to a better resolution after reviews..

So let me get this straight they're either so incompetent they can't tell 720 from 1080 or they're nothing but a bunch of bought shills with no integrity or professionalism. That's a tough one.
