Just months after DKC: Returns came out, Nintendo initially said Retro Studios had no current plans to do a sequel, so that made us figure they will do something different or go back to Metroid. Nintendo could have had one of its own teams handle the sequel, given their expertise in the platformer genre, but Retro was the one who revived the series, it was their best selling game, and they were the one who made the request to want to do a sequel, so Nintendo obviously said do it even though it may not have been the wisest choice. After all, Wii U is already full of platformers, so Retro could have tackled Metroid again, a different franchise spin-off, or something totally new.

Personally, I think Tropical Freeze looks like a lot of fun, and it may even turn out to be better than Returns was. I pretty much like all the new things their doing to the game from the including of the dynamic camera , new enemies, pulling mechanic, underwater areas, and other things like Dixie Kong's comeback, and of course, David Wise's contribution to the soundtrack which I hope is one of the things Retro does a better job with compared to the first game. They need some more stand out, memorable tracks.

The thing with Retro Studios is that they've shown their talent for handling Nintendo's IPs, but it would be interesting to see if they can make something just as compelling if they were to make their own IP. Quite frankly, Nintendo does need to introduce some new blood into its software portfolio, and Retro provides them with an opportunity to make the kind of game Nintendo's other teams may not be compelled to ever do.
