- Mario 3D World is a direct sequel to Mario 3D Land, a 3DS game.
- The new Kirby 3DS game is clearly using as much from Kirby's Return to Dreamland game as much as possible.
- Donkey Kong Tropical Freeze is a direct sequel to DKC Returns.
- NSMBU was directly using NSMBWii stuff.
- Mario Kart 8 is clearly using assets, animations and ideas from Mario Kart 7.
- Heck, Smash Bros is coming to Wii U and 3DS at the same time!
It feels like Nintendo cheaping out and making direct sequels instead of making new and unique IP that use their new controller to the fullest.
This post makes me understand the opposite camp better. We look for different things in our games, simple as that.
Mario Kart 8's anti-gravity mechanic, combined with the perfectly optimized gameplay of MK7, will make this the Galaxy of the franchise. This is my most hyped next gen game. The track design will be insane.
NSMB U is a stale sequel presentation-wise, and there is no power-up/gimmick that fundamentally changes approach to designing levels, but besides that, it's up there with SMB3 and SMW in quality.
3D Land -> 3D World is the same deal as Galaxy -> Galaxy 2. The fact that it started out as a handheld title is irrelevant. That only means handhelds aren't limited in tech any longer, that is to say Nintendo can create the game they want without being held back.
