What Nintendo needs right now is a title to get people to give them a second look. As arguably their most prominent Western dev team, Retro was the most likely candidate to give Nintendo that big, AAA, exclusive game that appeals to fans of Western game design. Retro could have created a game that made Nintendo relevant to the current gaming atmosphere.
Instead, Nintendo put them on yet another colorful platformer -- a genre the Wii U is already drowning in, and yet isn't really benefiting from.
Don't get me wrong, the game will most likely be great, but a more "on-trend" style game from Retro would have likely been great, too, and would have done a lot more for Nintendo long-term. In that sense, Tropical Freeze is a complete waste.
Ding ding ding. Well it is unwanted by me since I didn't like DKCR and am burned out on 2D platformers for the time being (especially when considering my VC collection).

Had you told me any time before last e3 that I would be way more excited about Armature's upcoming game than I was about Retro's, I would have died of laughing. Still can't believe it.
EDIT: Whoops, didn't mean to dredge up 1st page posts. Didn't notice how big the thread was.
