I maintain though, that in the overall scheme of things, a new IP or Metroid wouldn't have made a ripple and people are just venting about it here.

I disagree almost completely, at least outside of the short-term. DKCR2 is the better short-term decision since it will most likely sell more than other games Retro could be making, but long-term it is terrible as it will be selling to the same crowd that bought a Wii U already or really just needed a 7th 2D platformer to convince to jump in (and a small number of DCKR fanatics who will buy a console for that game). Somebody who will buy a Wii U for Retro's major western AAA game, X, maybe Zelda, maybe Smash, and say a few other tag along 3rd party games will likely pick up Mario, MK, and some other games. People buying DKCR2 soon will have already purchased them. Also, most people aren't going to buy more than a few 2D platformers, so in the future to the extent DKCR2 is better/more popular it will simply be taking a sale away from one of the other of the cornucopia of 2D platformers on the system.

Further, what Nintendo needs to do now more than anything else is sell consoles, sell consoles, sell consoles. We already know how well having almost nothing but a plethora fo the best 2D platforming games today sells a console. *looks at Wii U sales* Not very well.
