Previous NYC thread

Reboot thread? Reboot thread. HUGE thanks to bob page for for letting me use his already fantastic OP (I know you're out there lurking) but now with several updates to it . Also, thanks to Fallengorn for the subtitle.

Welcome to beautiful New York City,
home to NYU, Columbia University, CUNY/SUNY, several prominent art schools, famous local sports teams, Humans of New York, and pizza among the billions of things this restless city has to offer. We have a 110+ year old subway system that turns into a sauna in the summer with how hot it gets in there. We experience all four seasons, tourists love to come here in droves all year long but particularly more so in the summer, and we recently happen be the worst city in the US to retire in because of continually rising costs of living/rent. Queens, Bronx, Brooklyn, Staten Island, and Manhattan together form the 5 boroughs connected together by bridges, ferries, subway lines, and buses. Long Island is the suburban section of NYC where you get to see lots and lots of trees.

We’re also BFFs with neighboring states New Jersey and Connecticut which together form the Tri-State area. Further upstate is Albany where all the state legislative magic happens as well places such as Buffalo, Oswego, New Paltz, and Lake Eerie among others. Further up north is our neighbor country, Canada with Toronto being the biggest city closest to us and Niagara Falls being the border town .

Our current Mayor is this guy:

NYC GAF meet ups

The GAF meetups are self-explanatory: take a bunch of GAF members from the city, a neighboring state, or from abroad, throw them into a bar or a big gaming event for shenanigans ahoy. Socializing is name of the game here as plenty of fun times will be had.

Upcoming GAF meet ups:

Past NYC GAF meet ups:
Note 1: I've excluded NY Comic Con threads because it's usually been impossible to organize a meet up during it due to conflicting schedules. *: The Scribblenauts Launch Party was the first GAF meet up I ever attended.

Parks:
As seen on TV, comics, video games, and movies, NYC parks are as famous as the Statue of Liberty and the Empire State Building

-Central Park: THE MOST FAMOUS PARK IN THE CITY. The park takes a few hours to walk through and you can easily spend a day or two exploring it (it's over 50 blocks long).
-The High Line: A newer park that is now completely finished. Also a must-see. It's built upon abandoned above-ground railway tracks along the Hudson River. When you get up to the park, you walk alongside plants, flowers, and fountains as you get great views of the city.
-Union Square: A local hang-out spot that often hosts farmer's markets and performances
-Washington Square Park: In the NYU campus, there are often quite a few performances going on
-Battery Park: In downtown Manhattan, Battery Park offers great views of the Statue of Liberty
-The Esplanade: Connects to Battery Park and goes north along the Hudson to the World Financial Center. A great path for running and biking
-Governor's Island: You can take a free ferry here and relax. Less people than Central Park and has great views of downtown Manhattan
-Madison Square Park: Great views of the Empire State Building and home to Shake Shack!
-Fort Tryon Park - http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fort_Tryon_Park
-Roosevelt Island-Accessible via the F train but I would highly recommend opting to take the scenic route via the tram at the 59th St. Bridge. It's easily circumnavigated by foot in a couple of hours
-Prospect Park (AKA Brooklyn's Central Park)-Developed by the mastermind of Central Park but housed in Brooklyn. It's surrounded by a couple of Brooklyn areas including Windsor Terrace and Prospect Heights
-Inwood Hill Park (in Dyckman/Inwood)-The best place to see some effin' stars and birds as well as hike.
-Riverside Park- Massive strip along Riverside Drive park that starts at around 79th street and continues all the way up to 181st in Washington Heights
-Flushing Meadows Corona Park- Best known for hosting The U.S. Open in late August/early September but when it's not hosting tennis matches, barbecues, and soccer games are had during the summer
-Randall's Island-Another park that hosts soccer games on its soccer fields as well as has a couple of baseball areas.
-FDR Drive Park (recommended by Lulubop)
-Bushwick Park (recommended by Yencid)- has several bars and restaurants surrounding the area. It's an increasingly trendy area.
-Van Cortlandt Park (The Bronx)--has hiking trails to go on
- St. Mary's Park (rec: bob arctor)
-Pelham Bay Park (rec: entrement)

Museums:
NYC has some of the world's greatest museums, so if that's what you're into, there's plenty of choices.

A quick word on museums:
Suggested donation= pay whatever you want e.g. a penny, $1, etc. not $20.
-Privately financed museum such as the Guggenheim= not suggested donation so you pay whatever price of admission they ask for. There are student discounts available with ID as well as free days that are open to the general public.

-MoMA (Museum of Modern Art): Houses many Picassos and Van Gogh's Starry Night. One of bob page’s personal favorite museums.
-The Met (Metropolitan Museum of Art): Features a variety of paintings and sculptures, located on the east side of Central Park
-The American Museum of Natural History: Located on the west side of Central Park. Includes models of animals, dinosaur bones, and more
-The Guggenheim: A modernist museum that features art you won't find anywhere else. The building was also designed by Frank Lloyd Wright, which is a sight in itself

According to many, New York City offers the world's finest selection of food. Some varieties of cuisine are better than others, but overall, it really doesn't get much better than this. No matter what your interest in, the city has it.

Here's the original NYC restaurant thread: http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=387673

General rule of thumb: Do not eat at chain restaurants in NYC (Red Lobster, Sbarro, Olive Garden, etc). Go to a local place and you'll be far better off.

Pizza:
Pizzerias are ubiquitous in the city so much that it's the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles' go to food. From brick oven places to big name places that have sprawling lines. Every New Yorker has a favorite pizza joint that it'll be hard to get every single place in so here's the biggest and most famous ones.

New York City is home to about 9 million people so tourists can be pretty intimidated sometimes. Even with all its people, NYC is one of the safest big cities in the world and you shouldn't be afraid of exploring (just don't act like an idiot). Here are some tips to remember if you're visiting the city:

-If some random person approaches you, it's usual best to ignore them
-Think of the sidewalks of Manhattan has highways. Do you slam on your breaks on the highway? I hope not, so don't do it on the sidewalk, either. Walk to the edge of the sidewalk if you want to stop and take pictures or else you'll piss off a lot of people
-Similarly, when on an escalator, stand on the right side and walk on the left side. Don't block the left side unless you plan on walking up
-New Yorkers are proud of their city and are usually pretty nice. Don't be afraid to ask for directions to NYPD or locals
-Carry cash. Many restaurants and cafes don't take plastic
-Wear good walking shoes!
-The MTA has many free subway map apps for iPhone and Android
-The IKEA boat that leaves from downtown Manhattan is free, offers good views of the city
Feel free to pop into the thread to ask any questions if you plan on visiting the city.

I would recommend checking out the Brooklyn brewery if you are ever in Williamsburg. Went there last Saturday, the brewery tour is free and then you can grab a few beers afterward in the bar. Fun times!

It's bad, but I grew up in Miami, so I know it can be worse.

Also, didn't know you were in NYC. Kark should host an in-person mafia game.

Great OP jipan, also if anybody is interested, I tried the new Brick and mortar location for halal guys at 96th, pretty nice and clean place and just few dollars more than the cart prices.

No shit. Dating is expensive and I'm slowly trying to get my girlfriend into the habit of just us cooking dinner at her house once a week, eating out multiple times a week is killer on the wallet.

CT has issues. Grew up there. Southern parts wants to be NY while Northern wants to be MA lol. We don't really have anything to call our own expect the pizza! I went on a sort of couple day vacation last week to Boston/The cape and went to Pepe's on the way back and see a bunch of NY'ers that drove all the way for the pizza. Line out the door obviously. Pizza still legit

Rudy's should be added to the bars list. $7 pitchers of beer and free hot dogs smack-dab in Midtown is an insane deal. I really don't know how they pay rent.

I'm happy to see Go Go Curry make it in, though. Great cheap eats in that hellhole part of NYC near Times Square. (Tabata Noodle and the sister location are good too in that area, even if they are no Ippudo.)
