Marvel and DC have both done ridiculous tie-in comics for decades. This isn't new. It wasn't done out of some sort of desperation.

G. Willow Wilson, one of the creators and main writer for Kamala Khan/Ms. Marvel, flat out says in a blog post that she would have quit Marvel if this deal went through. She even says she was looking at her schedule for the right time to quit so that it would hurt her crew as little as possible.

It's not complicated. The term 'arms manufacturer' has strong connotations to 'guns'. Uninformed folk (like myself!) will make that connection, and the proxy connection to LV.
