Nikkei: Nintendo ceasing Wii U production at the end of the year

Update: NX IS being unveiled this year, to the surprise of no-one. :p

Just to clarify: The Nikkei doesn't rule out that Nintendo will sell NX this year. They are also confirming it will be unveiled though.

1) The Nikkei just reports Nintendo will stop producing Wii U within 2016. It doesn't say they will necessarily start selling NX in 2016.

2) Acc. to the paper, some Wii U accessories are already not being produced anymore. Nintendo plans to deplete inventory this year. //end

Wow. Looks like those shortages in Japan aren't so "out of nowhere" so to speak. Can't say I'm surprised. I just hope NX is this year.

I think this kind of complements well (together with Zelda being on NX) Trev assumption that is the NX console the one launching this year.

Well there we go

Wouldn't surprise me if they already stopped producing them honestly. No reason to keep supporting the Wii U at this point.

This is not a joke, but based on the shipment numbers over the lifetime of the system were they even producing any more new units in 2016 in the first place?

I'm surprised they were still producing any to begin with. I figure they're holding onto just enough of them in order to make it to the end of the year. Too bad that translates into not enough of Japan being able to get their Splatoon fix.

They're probably still sitting on a ton of systems, so it makes sense, especially if they're going to replace it later this year.

Always sad to see the end of a console generation, especially earlier than expected. However, I'm looking forward to an NX future. I was incredibly happy with my decision to purchase a Wii U at launch.

Oh wow. Wow wow wow wow.

Unless, maybe, Wii U mini?

Edit: Wii mini came out in 2013, FYI, one year after wii U came out, as a budget entry into the wii library.

So those that bought a Wii U, are you happy with what you got? Are you happy with the 4 year production cycle of the console?

Sorta sucks, but honestly, Wii U has had some of my favorite nintendo games of all time, and the best versions of games in long running franchises - smash 4, mario kart 8, etc. I easily have more games I adore on Wii U than most any other console i've ever purchased. It does suck, but considering the state of the console, i'm all for something new and refreshing that hopefully brings a spark back to nintendo. Here's hoping NX does well, I guess.

Since when has the Wii U ever been considered "high profile?"

Really?
