With the release of PS3 Firmware 2.0, custom themes have now been added. Similar to the PSP, Sony has released a tool that will allow users to create their own themes. Basic knowledge of XML and some art skill is all that is needed.

To compile the sample, type the following from a command prompt:

p3tcompiler.exe sample\01\sample.xml

METHODS OF INSTALL

A) Download directly from the PS3 Web Browser
B) Download on your PC and place it on a flash card or USB device under the directory /PS3/THEME/

if so, can I request that people post direct links to completed themes in here, along with a *small* preview image? Then we can just browse this thread on the PS3 to download them.

Supposedly people downloaded them straight from the browser, so it can be done.

Supposedly you can but I'm having trouble figuring out how to do it right now. The document says this:

To upload your theme file to the server for later download via the Internet browser implemented on the
PLAYSTATION®3 system software, the theme file must be assigned a special MIME-Type and extension.
The MIME-Type and extension are shown below.

i just did some icons for a test but the fking compiler still doesnt work for me ... if i drag and drop the xml in it i get an error (system couldnt find the path..) and it failes

Is there someone here who can make that awesome looking sample Theme downloadable for me please?? Through PS3 browser it doesn't work and when I put it on my USB stick, go to Theme settings and choose install from USB stick, the PS3 doesn't see the sample.p3t I put on the USB stick. Weird.


Never mind, I didn't see that you actually have to put the themes in /PS3/THEME directory on the USB stick!!!

Nice theme this one!!!


Now, were are my Transformers the movie themes?????????

You have to put it in a THEME sub-folder, the latter being in a PS3 folder

Got me thinking..it'd be nice if they put themes on Blu-ray movies given how many blu-ray users are on PS3.

I'm sure we'll see them as game unlockables and extras too, asides from whatever goes on the store.

Wow at the idea of an unlockable special HAZE theme for the PS3 and PSP at once...

Even if the game sucks, the theme would look ace.

Don't themes edit the icons as well? Are those customized/editable too? I quite like the effect, especially on that, uh, the one with the stuff that's in that computer commercial? Time-lapse light pictures?

I downloaded the Sample theme, put it on my USB stick, tried to install it from the Theme menu, but it said that there is no theme on my USB stick. Anyone else had problems with the sample theme?

Also, is there a way to skin those shiny new folders/"albums" we were able to make? The new folders don't match the skinned folders in the Games section and it sticks out. Minor gripe, but still!

Is there a way to change the font color in the theme xml specification? I mean, the ONLY failure on all those downloadable themes is the white text not being readable at all ¬¬

Apparently the last two items in the XML file are the font type and color parameters.

Has anyone tested compiling the sample theme with a modified XML table?

The fonts being designated by a number seems queer, seemingly hinting at a fixed selection of 2-3 fonts installed on the machine.

I just installed the sample theme and Queeg just signed on and it was transparent blue. :lol

this is incorrect. according to the documentation, the font selection number is for one of three predefined system fonts. the color selection is for the background color from one of 12 predefined background colors, for the options screen and when you choose not to have a wallpaper with the font.

unless it's undocumented, currently it doesn't look like there's a way to change the font color.

and while the font is technically white, the fact that it is transparent and luminescent at least provides some assistance in creating backgrounds. I mean having a white or very light background is going to be tough (like the PSN Simpsons wallpaper.. uggh), but at least you'll be able to work with it somewhat.

Well, at least this is one area where PS3 has X360 beat. You can create some amazing game-related themes with this feature!

There are three fonts
"The font of character strings to be displayed on the system software screen can be customized.
Select one of the following fonts provided by the system.
• Standard
• Maru Gothic
• Pop"

The colours seem to be the base colour as below

"Theme Color
The color of the system software screen can be customized. The customized color will be used for the
following scenes:
• Color of the background graphics when the background image is not applied
• Color of the Options menu
Select one of the following theme colors provided by the system."

there are 12, font colour does not seem to be changeable
