Star Trek Online: Legacy of Romulus

For the last few weeks, Star Trek Online has been teasing a countdown to 13:00 (UTC) today. Their German and French websites seem to have pushed the reveal page live early and it looks like the game is getting a very substantial update for May 21st.

Star Trek Online: Legacy of Romulus
Romulus and Remus are destroyed. You are one of the survivors, fighting for life after an unthinkable destruction.

Your people lives a dark and dangerous period, the Tal'Shiar quiets any rebellions and mysterious creatures spread terror in far reach colonies.

You must rebuild an Empire. Gather your allies, work undercover, and find proof that will rally your people around your revolt.

Together, you will rise against your oppressor and claim your freedom. You fight for your people.

You are the heritage of Romulus.

English link isn't available yet I'm afraid, but will appear here: http://sto.perfectworld.com/sto_may2013
(Fake edit) It looks like the German link has been taken down too...

  • "Romulan Republic" playable faction
  • KDF and Romulans will be playable from level 1 to 50 - currently KDF starts at 20 (I think)
  • New Reputation System for an anti-Tholian task force
  • Complete UI revamp - improved look and feel, option to customise colour scheme
  • Denise Crosby returns to provide voice for Empress Sela

New UI

Romulan character creation

Romulan ships

New Beta-Quadrant enemy faction (not named yet)

Seems *VERY* substantial so far.

I've been thinking of starting STO. Would this be a good time to dive in?

Sure, but I wouldn't start a Klingon character until this update is out otherwise you'll miss the level 1 to 20 content they're adding.

We have a "Fleet" (aka guild) for our Fed characters you can join called GAFleet, and the community thread is below:

If you make sure you engage with the User Generated Content in the game, there's a lot to do. Otherwise, the space combat is good fun in of itself.

Didn't even know STO was still running, thought they shut it down pretty early... or was it just turned into F2P? So, yeah, is it worth playing?
Yeah it went F2P last year. It seems to be doing quite well for Cryptic (and their owners PWE); they've been saying how the growth from F2P enabled them to go on a massive hiring spree with this update being the result.

I really like the direction of the new GUI. But I haven't logged into STO in a while now.

Their bloated and messy agent system put me off for good.

You mean the Duty Officer system? It can be clunky but it's largely avoidable.
I recall running into it after they implemented it in the first place. Like it was some quest stuff that I had to go through and then those agent guys failed at everything.

Whatever, I blame my OCD in situations like that.

Sweet Romulans, I guess it was a good time for me to jump back in so I can get my Tact done before new characters.

It's good that they are bringing down the start level for Klingons, I think being minimum 20 was really hurting their numbers as most would want to continue their fed characters. And the same can be said for the Romulans.

New UI looks pretty slick, more Star Treky you might say, looking forward to it.

Wonder if Klingon players are going to be pissed, they get less content and updates as it is without a third faction, saying that Klingon players are mostly angry people anyway, lol.

I think KDF players will be happy enough with the 1-20 level progression they'll have access to and the new UI. Plus whatever cross-faction missions get released!

Not really no. I played the beta and it was a broken mess. I left it, tried it again a couple months ago, it's the same boring, lifeless, tedious gameplay but with the bugs and glitches fixed. The game itself is incredibly boring.

Well that's just not true (though of course I'd say that). Even if you never play a single mission, the space combat model is just satisfying and fun. They've added a tonne of additional systems since launch, and you can level a character *easily* playing nothing but the highest rated User Generated Content.

I can see how someone who doesn't do PvP, doesn't play UGC missions and doesn't engage with the supplementary systems (like Duty Officers, the Reputations, the Exchange meta game). But avoiding all those things seems silly.

Is this game any good? I tried World of Warcraft recently and then Wizardry Online and both of them bored me to tears. I think I just don't like MMORPGs.

I saw on the wiki page that in this continuity the Federation and Klingons are at war again. lol

Check out some Youtube videos of ship combat if you want to get a flavour for it. They've made the ground portion of the game a lot better recently as well, but the ship to ship combat is where the game *clicks* or not for people.

The ground combat is god awful, the space combat is ok for about 5-6 missions then I found it gets just as dull. It would have been far more interesting if it had more depth like targeting a range of subsystems and they did more than just fly around aimlessly shooting.

Heh, well you're entitled to your opinion. All I can say is that if that's how the space combat system worked for you... I just wish I came up against more people like you in PvP for the easy wins.

I really like the game. I got me back into ST after not paying attention to the franchise for years. You really don't have spend any money at all to play so there is no excuse not to give it a go. If you are a Trek fan its full of fun fan service. I really like the way they twist traditional MMO conventions to make them fit into the Trek universe.

I tried to play again last month but couldnt recover my account. Might come back and start a new Romulan character after the update.

Cool! I'll try it out this weekend or the next.

Despite some issues it has some incredible parts. I have been in it since day one and ya there have been starts and stops but all in all I enjoy it more than any other MMO.

It has god tier fan service for sure.

Stuff like this is why I am hoping that PS4 and the NextBox see more support for free to play mmos, or mmos in general. I have always wanted to try this, but my previous PC fried on me, and I wont have a new one until sometime after the PS4 is released.

Looks awesome though, I would kill for a new series, but lukily for me TNG is on Blu ray now.

No. No we won't. Not if that's all we're getting. Unless there is some significant work / effort put into this. There's a lot of missions there were pretty much just literal C&P of Fed Missions with just small word dialogue changes. Stuff like that is the usual half-assed effort that the KDF have been given from day 1. We still get forgotten about when it comes to ships, or said excuses like: "Oh only 16% of players touch KDF so they're not worth doing anything for."

Yes, we have a few things easier. Like grinding ore, and a few Duty Officer missions that are better but they're still just generic repeatable. I just want to see some serious effort and care put into this. If I see just a few missions that give you like 10 levels in one go, then it's going to come off as half-attempted. But if the Romulan side is that good, depending on what species they can pick from.. maybe I'll just finally throw in the towel and switch sides.

Alright. Grumpy me is done, but to those inquiring bout the game. I'll say this.

For the record. I do have a lifetime sub, but I stopped playing recently due to dislikes the direction of the game has gone.

Space combat is pretty fun in my opinion. Though the game does heavily favor tactical escort ships vs anything else except for like.. maybe the last strike force mission. I'm still in the camp that any ship can / will succeed with the right player behind it. But from a min/max, choice perspective.. the game suffers from the lack of needing other stuff and with most optional stuff being a DPS race... well... you see why quickly.

Grind Combat will be hit or miss. Anyone who played at launch and remember the original knows the new one is a gigantic improvement. But it still has its fair share of issues. Namely how fast you can get one-shotted or other hard to deal with mechanics. Granted this is just for end-game. Leveling, soloing etc, it's absolutely fine with the right equipment.

Customization is utterly amazing in this game. You can get lots of creative / unique aliens and there's plenty of good choices for making your character and your bridge crew. Which is also part of the fun. So if you like seeing what kinda creations you can make, this will really scratch that itch. (Though be warned. KDF has MUCH less options in regards to uniforms, customization etc. We still can't customize our rank 5 diplomacy / marauder bridge officer like the Feds can.)

End-game is pretty much a rep / gear grind like other MMOs. Take that for what you will and look at your past MMO habits for if you'd like it or not.

For everything I complain bout, I can tell you more good thing I highly enjoy. It's odd in this aspect. It's worth trying out and it's by far one of the better Trek games out there. While I am on a leave of absence from the game until this new update most likely. I still keep a close eye on it cause I want to come back.

Were/are you in a Klingon fleet? The GAF fleet is looking to join an existing KDF side fleet for our Klingon alts.

Loaded this up again today without realising that they had been an update, so that was a nice surprise. Seems I had a whole load of 'zen' and stuff I never claimed. So I've claimed that.

Heh, well feel free to join GAFleet and contribute some of the Dilithium you could buy with that Zen to the fleet Starbase... ;)

well, I gotta get back into this. I have a lifetime sub that I got before the game came out, yet I stopped playing the week after it was released.

You've probably got close to 15,000 Zen from your stipend to spend then. That's a fair number of ships, or about 1.35m Dilithium you can buy stuff with. ;)

Again, post your character@account name and we can get you in the fleet.

It's an alright game if you're somewhat interested in Star Trek.
If you're not a fan, I can't in good conscious recommend the game.

I think that's spot on. I tried to play STO before watching any of Star Trek. Then, I watched TNG and DS9 and tried STO again and was hooked. I guess I was looking for a fix.

I was in the beta and played for a short time afterwards. I didn't really enjoy the game at all. It seemed very buggy and poorly put together. I tried it out a few months ago though and it is so much better. I deleted my original character to start all over again and have been having a blast. It still seems like it could use more end game stuff to do besides grinding reputation. I started my new character in late November and I am already at max level with both rep factions maxed. Still, its a lot of fun to play, especially if you love Star Trek.

It's Star Trek; 99% of aliens were Humans with funny noses... ;)

That said, we've got Undine and Tholians in game:

Undine:

Tholian with and without EV suit:

Again, if you're still playing and want in on the GAF fleet, post your character@account name!

Yeah, but like in TOR they are just human bodies with different heads on them. I know the reason why but it just irks me.

Does the F2P differ greatly from Gold?

Just wondering if there is any p2w in it. I just glanced at it and saw a limited bridge officer or something. I forgot what that is about, but seems suspicious.

You'll never feel limited by not paying real cash. Plus, you can convert in-game currency into their cash store currency through a player exchange system, so you can always grind for any high-tier items that need "Zen".

yeah, STO always had one of the better F2P systems

I havent played in a really long time, maybe I should start again

I will take a fleet invite: Varishna@Varishna

Yeah, IMO it is the best F2P system I have seen. It is really easy to turn the in game cash into a decent amount of Zen. Most of the useful stuff from the Zen store can be sold on the exchange as well, such as the lockbox keys and Fleet modules.

Yeah, one of the few 'cash store' systems that seem to work and make sense. You still get a load of free content, but if you really want that new star ship, or 'rare race' to play, go buy it! Cosmetic uniforms are a nice touch too.

Hmm okay. Did launch buyers get anything special when it went F2P?

Also, is ground combat still bad?

All MMORPGs can be boring if you don't really care or have any attachment to the world or lore being used. Part of the enjoyment one gets from Star Trek Online is being able to play within the Star Trek universe. I would say the same can be said for Star Wars: The Old Republic and a varity of games that have their own fair share of issues.

I do feel the game has improved since it's launch. However the way you play it hasn't changed and no one should have expected it to.

So any new character creation options with the Expansion?

All i want is to be able to create a Jem'Hadar

You can't specifically create a Jem'hadar race character, but there are plenty of pieces that let you create a character that looks exactly like one, and then you can later get the Jem'hadar gear from a couple of later level missions if you want. I know we have at least one such player character in the fleet.
