Want a one-way ticket to Mars? A Dutch company is looking for you

Mars One wants to send you to the red planet, but it's a one-way trip

If you've always wanted to live on a distant world, Dutch company Mars One wants to give you your chance to settle on the red planet. There's only one catch: You'll never be able to return to Earth.

Next year, Mars One will hold a worldwide lottery to select 40 people to train to be civilian astronauts. That group will be sent to live in a desert simulation for three months, after which the initial pool will be whittled down to 10. By 2023, this group will be sent to Mars to form the first permanent human settlement.

According to Bas Lansdorp, founder of Mars One, "We will send humans to Mars in 2023. They will live there the rest of their lives. There will be a habitat waiting for them, and we'll start sending four people every two years."

Once the new settlement has begun to thrive, the possibility for a return visit to Earth may open up. Still, that's not guaranteed. Says Lansdorp, "our astronauts will be offered a one-way trip. We have no idea when it will be possible to offer return tickets."

Joining up with Mars One is probably the most cost-effective way you'll ever set foot on Mars. After all, buying a round-trip ticket to Mars from space tourism company Space X will cost you $500,000.

GAF, will you sign up??

As soon as I land on the planet and I'm killing everyone else that came with me and claiming the planets for myself. This is a perfect opportunity to build a society based on my ideas.

Mars will be Best Earth. I will build giant robots and start a war with earth.

I remember the previous thread about these Dutch plans. I would so go, but I'm not forever-alone enough to be willing to go, at least not yet.

I'm gonna need a source for that ridiculously low number.

I would jump on this, but I somehow doubt they'd accept me with my dependency on insulin and specific food types to avoid allergies.

I think that's the groupon price.

If was in the twilight of my life and had accomplished everything I wanted to on Earth, then hell yes I'd sign up.

But the reality is I'm 20 and I want to do shit here.

With no police on Mars. What's stopping someone from going serial killer and killing off the whole colony. The temptation to become the first space age serial killer might be too tempting for some people.

It is pretty crazy that whoever does this will be legends on Mars. You will be making history, and setting up lots of wealth for family's future generations.

Yeah, I could handle it. I will be the token "PTSD guy".

It would be cool for 6 months. And then the depression of never being able to return would set in
It's not like leaving home to move to another country. This is leaving earth forever. Depressing wouldn't even begin to describe how someone would feel if they could never return to earth.

Obviously the space trip itself will never happen, but the simulation could be interesting to watch.

How will this even work. What is the plans for building living environments. What about medical issues and births. What about food. Can we power entire living quarters for long enough?

How are things going to be built on the surface, By the settlers? You need at least 2 people in every required profession before this even starts.

Without the threat of law and punishment how will the people selected be deterred from committing not only small scale stuff like theft but large scale crimes like rape and murder.

Something like this will only work when travel between the planets can be done in such a short time that its feasible and cost effective to go back and forth between earth and mars during construction. Then both a military and a government need to be established on the planet.

The colonist on mars will rebel against our taxes and dump their oxygen into the atmosphere.

Martian Oxygen Party. MOP. History always repeats.

This is just a ridiculous dream people have, like what Stalker said, it won't make any sense until there is a consistent way of transporting people back and forth from Earth to Mars.

The company recommends that you don't have sex until they have a huge established colony there just in case a woman gets pregnant there.
