Some interesting tidbits from GameInformer:

http://www.gameinformer.com/games/battlefield_4/b/pc/archive/2013/06/12/everything-we-know-about-battlefield-4-multiplayer.aspx

Some really interesting stuff in here. Some of it is rehashed, but there is quite a bit of new info/confirmations.

The Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and PC versions each support 64-player maps and run at a solid 60 frames per second. The Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 versions, however, are still limited to 24-players per match and 30 frames per second.

Given the larger squad size, Squad Deathmatch mode now includes more competitors.

Like Battlefield 3, the soldier classes you can play as are assault, engineer, recon, and support. All classes now have more shared weapons so players have more versatility when selecting their loadout.

Each class and weapon has a deeper persistance tree than previous Battlefield games.

DICE is changing how specializations work. It won't go into the finer details, but the developer is creating a system where you and your squad can bump up your specializations as you play if you are doing well.

Gun and player customization are being broadened. You can now have multiple sights on your weapons and add optical magnifiers on the fly. (clarification: dual scopes, switching sights, adding a zoom scope, etc.)

Vehicle progression is deeper as well.

DICE has two new game modes it plans to reveal in the near future, and it plans to drop a few modes that were featured in Battlefield 3. The confirmed modes thus far are squad deathmatch, conquest, rush, and team deathmatch.

Hardcore mode is returning.

The crazy wave technology featured in the E3 single-player demo is also coming to multiplayer. All the wave data is being pushed over the network, which means that every player will have the same sea experience at the same time.

Given the increased focus on naval combat, DICE is making sure you aren't a sitting duck if you lose your sea vessel or parachute into a body of water. Soldiers can now swim sprint, use sidearms in the water, hit the crounch button to dive underneath the surface of the water, and even deploy C4 to take out boats.

Players can rent their own Battlefield 4 servers on consoles from day one, and DICE plans to give them more server modifiers than were available in Battlefield 4.

DICE knows the destruction in BF3 was disappointing so destructibility is coming back in a major way. Expect to see the microdestruction introduced in the Close Quarters map pack, plus large-scale destruction like the crumbling skyscraper in the E3 demo.

You won't be able to completely flatten urban areas, which is a design choice rather than a technical limitation.

Like Titanfall, DICE is using a proprietary matchmaking service instead of using the Xbox One native service.

DICE is also incorporating a skill level system on top of your player rank to help match you with players of a similar ability. You can set your rented server to only accept players of a certain ability.

DICE learned its lesson with Battlefield 3, and plans to keep a healthy amount of DICE sponsored servers for people who don't want to deal with the quirky rented servers.

Rather than build its own battle recorder, however, DICE plans to use the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 recorders.

Battlefield 4 also includes a spectator mode.

Given the difficult learning curve for some of the more powerful vehicles like jets and helicopters, DICE is including a practice mode or tutorial system of sorts so you can learn the tricks of the trade without hurting your team in a ranked match. (me: FINALLY!)

Battlelog is being revamped to be more directly integrated into the game and to give console players the same experience as the PC version. DICE wants the console players to have the ALT-TAB experience just like PC players, so you can check your stats at any time.

You can alter your loadout directly from the Battlelog app so it will be ready for you when you jump into a match.

Hearing lots of good things. DICE is really delivering and showing their commitment to fan feedback.

Basically everything we're hearing, we heard about BF3. You guys should really go back and read some of those threads, and see all the broken promises.

Sorry, I'm still a little salty over some of that stuff (Caspian tower, deformable terrain, server-side hit detection, e-sports support).

Please be Titan mode, please be Titan mode, please be Titan mode...

If I had to make a predication, it would be some 'spiritual successor' to Titan that would involve aircraft carriers/battleships and focus on Sea combat. They have really been pumping Sea hard as a key pillar of the game, yet have only showed a very small, limited look at it. I think they've got something big planned when it comes to these new modes along with sea combat.

But, we'll have to wait and see. So far, DICE has earned a lot of goodwill on this one.

Rather than build its own battle recorder, however, DICE plans to use the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 recorders.

We haven't seen much about the built in Xbox One and PS4 recorders and how much functionality they have but I still think a full BattleRecorder is needed.

I want something with the functionality of Theater Mode in CoD.

The ability to pause, move camera around in the word, etc.. would be so awesome.

Sure, you can do that with spectator mode and then record each view separately but being able to do it after the fact would be so awesome.

Wait, so if you and your squad are doing well, your reward is perks that make you even better?

Looks like it. I remember before BF3 was released, someone mentioned "team streak" rewards and Alan Kertz (Demize on Twitter) mentioned how it would be interesting or something to that effect.

Hype building...

I always thought it is counterproductive balance and challenge wise for a game to become easier the better you get at it. noob-friendly and cheap perks/add-ons should be open from the start and lock out the better you get.

The stream and all of the new details have completely sold me on BF4. It looks like a real improvement in every department, which makes me very happy.

Please be Search and Destroy, please be Search and Destroy, please be Search and Destroy...

;)

I agree though (the Titan could be a carrier. An AC130 would have been better, but it's deployable by the commander). But if you're gonna kill CoD you gotta have its best mode!

there's already search and destroy

I didn't want to like this game but goddamn this takes shits all over BF3 and I must have it. Here's to putting another 1,000+ hours into a battlefield game with BF4 ;)

Thank god for this. Never even bothered with jets in BF3, and I would have skipped the chopper too if not for the CO-OP mission that allows you to get a feel for it. The garbage single player in BF3 was completely useless in terms of training the player on how to use vehicles.

Eh. I would rather the game award teamwork within squads so people play medics. If the streaks are minor boosts like a one time squad heal them it should work fine.

There has been extensive discussion on this and my opinion is that it makes no sense to punish skill. Which you indirectly do by rewarding the lack of skill.
It can also help preventing teams tying with each other too often and prevent to many games that would otherwise run the full map time.
The human get's better in something by reward of skill, that is actually more effective then punishing failure. Our brain is wired like that.
I get you point but for example the rubber-banding in Mario Kart wasn't a good thing.

I read "Battlefield 4 Steam" and got too excited :(

Ha ha yeah... i think people would even pay extra just to get rid of Origin.
EA Should budge and reason if it can't be as successful as Steam and they can't beat them they might as well join them. Stubborn and greedy corporation.

Talking about not-so-greedy corporations: I just received my free HD TV-decoder (worth about 150/200 Euro), complementary from my provider for being a loyal customer. Yay.

Adding a spectator mode makes a lot of sense. Hardly takes up bandwidth in these days with a big pay-off, especially in the competitive scene. I remember watching pro's play CS 1.6 and just watching, kinda like how let's plays are big now.

sweet.

- Recon doesn't look like a douchbag anymore
- Still has the standard BF3 motion sensor
- Support has grenade launcher
- Engineer seems to be the same
- Climbing ladder is quicker
- The enemy getting shot and falling down looked sweet
- the flag symbols are finally not IN YOUR FACE
- Hand gestures when giving commands
- you can open and close shutter gates, how cool is that
- Tanks seem to have a very limited amount of ammo, so far I've only seen five or six 120mm grenades

Guys let's list the weapons and gadgets we have seen so far:

- AK 5C
- U100 MK5
- HAWK 12G
- RFB
- CZ 3A1
- P90
- M84 Flashbang
- M34 Incendiary
- Scout Elite

New gadgets:

- Angled grip
- canted ironsights
- green laserpointer
- lots of different paints for weapons

The more I see this game, the more I want. Looking good and should make an interesting departure from the pretty long in the tooth COD series.

What's to stop people from destroying these large buildings at the beginning of the round? Or will chances be it will just happen straight away almost every time?

Can see that getting frustrating.

I don't know if this has been posted, but I see some important things: now your equipment is not slot locked, you decide what item you put in each of the slots, and it seems that at least in this alpha the main four weapon categories (Carbine, PDW, DMR and Shotgun) are available for all classes? :O

Interesting that they've rejigged the classes slightly.

I always thought giving support C4 was a little fishy considering the endless ammo thing. Giving it back to Recon as it as in Bad Company 2 might encourage snipers to be a bit more helpful when it comes to vehicles.

I'm super happy that support gets a grenade launcher now instead, could make the class very strong defensively.

Also the 120mm shells regenerate after a while. And the chinese tank is a Type 99.

well squad frags would give you more ammo for a grenade launcher assuming squad specialisations are back, which Im not sure they are. I think you unlock perks for your squad based on your perfomance.

I meant frags i mixed that up with EXPL.
If no one else has chosen it, even more so as a engineer, i always choose explosives.
Unlocking squad perks based on performance? Sounds interesting.

Probably takes a while to do enough damage to bring a big building down. And just sitting there attacking a building is a waste of time for your team. Though I'm sure some morons will sit there just attacking buildings for the heck of it.

Oh boy, I see they still insist on splitting the player base with a bajillion different modes and a hardcore version for each of those as well. I guess everyone threw out that old saying, "Less is more."

Reposting this:

  • 1080p, 60 FPS, 64 players confirmed for XB1 and PS4; 30 FPS, 24 players confirmed for X360 and PS3
  • Two new game modes coming, some of the ones in BF3 are being dropped
  • Confirmed game modes: Squad Deathmatch, Conquest, Rush, and Team Deathmatch
  • Specialization system is changed so your squad is rewarded with specializations as you do better
  • Hardcore mode confirmed
    • Ammo is magazine-based, not "pool"-based
  • 5 players per squad
  • 4 classes (Assault, Engineer, Support, Recon)
  • In-game VOIP confirmed
  • No Battle Recorder; can rely on built in XB1 and PS4 recorders
  • Practice mode/tutorial mode confirmed for vehicles
  • Better Battlelog integration for consoles
  • "Levolution"
    • Every map will have changes that can alter the makeup of the map/level.
    • Also refers to the verticality they want to add to maps.
    • So far, not scripted--can take out supports to bring down skyscraper
    • Urban areas can't be flattened by destruction; design choice, not engine limitation
  • Commander mode
    • One player on each side that does not occupy a player slot (64 players + 2 commanders)
    • Can be played from console, PC, or remotely with a tablet
    • Scan and EMP UAVs can be deployed; vehicle scans, tomahawk missiles, infantry scans, and gunships can be deployed based on whether or not certain bases are capture
    • Supply and vehicle drops
    • Set attack orders for individual squads
  • Vehicles
    • Enhanced vehicle disabling: Vehicles are disabled based on the parts that are hit; however, tires can't be shot out (it's not that granular)
    • Limited MBT 120mm ammo, which can regenerate
  • Other/mechanics
    • Squad assists can count as kills if you contibuted the most to the kill (maybe >90%?)
    • Reduced suppression: Support now contributes the most to suppression and it has a greater effect at long range
ADS near cover allows a "peak" cover system. Not sure if you can lean left/right, but seems you can pop up above cover
    • "Click to spawn" deployment options
    • Interface is muuuch less click-heavy vs BF3
    • Killfeed is gone; kills displayed in center of screen
    • Movement system has been tweaked for momentum; it takes a moment to get to full sprint speed
    • Directional callouts--the default "enemy spotted" voice seems to indicate directions/location relative to your position
    • Swimming
    • Hand gestures indicate commands
    • Ladder climbing is faster
    • Proprietary matchmaking system instead of system matchmaking
    • Skill system, in addition to matchmaking; can set skill reqs for servers
    • "Partial mod" support; likely to be server-side modifications (vehicle count, damage mods, player count???)
      • Can dive to avoid gunfire
      • Can shoot pistols under/above water while swimming
      • Can sprint swim
  • Spectator mode
    • Confirmed for PC, "we'll see" for console
    • Views: Table Top, First Person, Third Person, Free Cam
    • Can "set" up to four free cams around the map to quickly jump to certain location
    • UI can be turned off
    • Can click on player from table top view and get PiP view of their screen
  • Class info
    • Assault
      • Standard health bag
      • Small health pack, which you can toss onto someone. It regenerates their health, regardless of their proximity to you. If you toss onto ground, can still be used to regenerate health
      • Defibs need to be charged before you can pick someone up; seems they still need to be unlocked
    • Recon
      • C4
      • Motion sensor ball
      • Range finder
      • Ability to use different zoom levels in one scope
    • Support
      • Ammo bag: deployable ammo
      • Ammo pack: ammo that can individually be given to someone
      • Grenade launcher as equipment/gadget
  • Improved environments
    • Metal detectors can expose you, storefront gates can be shut to cut people off, fire extinguishers create smoke screens, bollards can prevent vehicle access
    • Water reacts dynamically to vehicles and events (skyscraper falling)
  • Weapons/equipment
    • Flashbangs
    • Incendiary grenades
    • Pistols can be customized
    • Tons of attachments/customizations (green hipfire laser sights, different foregrips, barrel types, bipods, silencer/flashlight combo)
    • Over 1200 items
    • Canted/dual sights
    • More shared weapons between classes

I'll post the BF4 News/Info thread after the livestream concludes today.

I always thought it is counterproductive balance and challenge wise for a game to become easier the better you get at it. noob-friendly and cheap perks/add-ons should be open from the start and lock out the better you get.

Yeah, not sure how I feel about that. I like some kind of reward, but not one that necessarily creates further separation.

Can see that getting frustrating.

I've been thinking about that all this days. That's one of the things I hated about the perfect desctruction on Bad Company 2. The noobs came and destroyed all buildings when defending. It was really frustrating.

I think they should give a perk if you own the base AND the building is not destroyed. Maybe revealing position of all enemies on map or something like that. If the building is destroyed you can not have that perk even when you own the base.

The no item lock is something I wanted since BF3.

And sad that Carl Gustav is no returning (untill now).

Isn't the "pre-alpha" thing just marketing garbage? Those leaked screens of the game with unfinished textures were from the real alpha build(ie. the in-house alpha build). Calling this pre-alpha is just PR drivel.
