Those players - the same who’ve queued through the night to pick up a retail copy of the game - have reportedly thrust Black Ops 2’s second disc into their CD drives to find that it reads as something entirely different: EA’s Mass Effect 2.

Redditors and Steam users have rightfully leapt on the problem. We haven’t been able to verify the mix-up ourselves, but we’re working on it.

It’s okay to laugh. While the second disc is necessary to complete installation, affected players can enter the serial number on the box into Steam’s product activation window to activate the game. But they’ll have to wait umpteen hours for the download to finish and do their best to avoid eye contact with their Friends list in the meantime.

the disc looks like a CoD disc, but the data inside actually belongs to Mass Effect 2

update:

confirmed!

Rumor has it that about a thousand customers who purchased Call of Duty: Black Ops II for PC today were also treated to a surprise copy of Mass Effect 2. If you were one of the affected, chances are you thought it was a mistake, but we prefer to think that it was an omen, and when the universe talks, you should listen.

If the universe thinks that you should be playing Mass Effect right now, who are we to argue? In fact, we want to help! The first fifty fans affected by this phenomenon to send us a picture holding their special disc 2 will receive a code for a FREE PC copy of Mass Effect Trilogy.

Um, I only have one disc. What's this 2 discs business?

Xbox version here, is this limited to the PC release? Why is it on 2 discs?

I thought they meant it just reads the title of the disc as Mass Effect 2, not that it's actually Mass Effect 2 on the disc, that would be a whole lot funnier.

Well from the video on Polygon it's actually a real Mass Effect 2 disk with Mass Effect 2 data and a Black Ops 2 painting xD

But yeah this is unfortunate and yet so very funny in a sense, maybe that means that both games play in the same universe and that the characters of Black Ops will soon discover space technology!

Though I really hope that affected users get it resolved quickly :/

it's not actually a big problem since the game is steamworks, they just have to download it.

It's fair to assume that some people buying a retail copy instead of digital do it so they don't have to download the game. So Activision should be considering to compensate them, allowing them to trade in Disc 2 in a couple weeks by itself won't cut it, they could give codes for free map packs or maybe they take the lame route and give a -20% Season Pass coupon.
