This year marks not only the 25th anniversary of the Final Fantasy series, but also the 25th anniversary of Megami Tensei (on September 11th) and the 20th anniversary of Shin Megami Tensei (on October 30th). So, let's play to celebrate!

There are no rules. Play whichever game you like as long as it's somehow related to the series. Try to show as much of your playthrough as you can. Whether it's by posting screenshots or detailed descriptions. You can go through the series in order if you wish but you really don't have to. Let's play as many different games of the series as we can!

Beware of spoilers! There will be screenshots everywhere, especially of bosses and important scenes and the games will be discussed freely. If you want to look at specific games only, take a look at the summary in the second and third post. I will try to keep up with every post to help you follow specific playthroughs.

Here are the most important releases to give you an overview of what games were released and which ones are playable in English. There are a lot more games in the series and I really hope some people will play them, too. Take a look at the links at the end to get information about those games and more detailed information about the ones I listed.

What's a good game to start with?
  • I'd recommend starting with Persona 3, either the "FES" version, that's on PSN (in NA) or the PSP version.
  • If you want to play something from the main series, try Nocturne (Lucifer's Call in PAL regions) for PS2 or Strange Journey (not released in PAL regions) for DS.

How to take screenshots:
  • For most of the games you will need to use some kind of capture device or just play them on an emulator.
  • For the PSP games: Take a look here and here.
  • And never forget: If all fails, you can still use your camera! In fact you won't have much of a choice if you play on DS or 3DS.
  • When Persona 4 Golden comes out: remember, the Vita has a built-in screenshot function (that sadly doesn't work with PSP games).

For PAL players:
  • Need to get rid of black borders in your pictures? Take a look here.

You'd rather play something else?

The OP beautification project:
This is actually the first thread I ever created here on Gaf. There's still much room for improvement. So if you have an idea how to make it look better or something useful to contribute, please tell me!

Special thanks to cj_iwakura who gave the permission to use the screenshots from the wonderful article on Hardcoregaming 101 and created the anniversary banner.

So, then:

Thanks for putting the work in, Jucksalbe!
Megami Tensei 2 was the first RPG I ever played, and this series has been really special to me ever since. I'll definitely be replaying that for this thread at some point, hopefully with screenshots and stuff. I actually just started replaying Raidou 1 last night, so it's good timing for me. I wish I still had a capture card I could use with my new PC, but alas...

Koroviev

Perfect timing! I'm currently working on wrapping up my first playthrough of DS:O and still have to finish Strange Journey, Persona 3 FES and at least one more playthrough of DS2. Motivation get!

Nice OP, btw ;)

You know....this would be just the right time for Atlus to release more of the PS2 classics on PSN...

why is Raidou 1 also very rare and expensive? I've been looking for a cheap copy for years now and online stores are selling them for a very high price.

I actually saw one 6 years ago, but if I were to convert it, it was around $100! no way Im paying that much.

It was released in the era when Atlus games had really small print runs and rarely got reprinted. Most of the other ones that came out during that time were popular enough to be reprinted, but Raidou 1 isn't very popular so I guess there isn't much of a demand for a reprint.

Maybe I should finish playing SMT I was pretty much lost on what to do after the guy told me to think about my choice when I was with the rebels leader

Isn't the second one generally considered to be much better?

oh well, after I graduate, I think I'll cough up the dough to get one along with P3 vanilla for my SMT collection.

For the thread, after I finish Psychonauts, I'll continue Innocent Sin. I've been putting that game on hold because of my OCD tendencies to complete the map and I end up wasting time just in one floor of a dungeon. Currently in Aquarius Shrine.

It has much, much, much better combat and fusion, yep.
I think the first one has an edge on story, but both are pretty cool in that respect. I love the time setting, it's really something that's relatively unexplored by RPGs, and adding the occult/supernatural aspect just makes it that much neater. It's kinda like Shadow Hearts in that respect.

I'm down for this. I may have to pick a portable SMT game as I'm playing Dragons Dogma at home. But I'm not sure which one I should go with.

Must know the source of those Junes pics!

I started replaying SMT1 not long ago, so this ties in nicely.

I'll try my best to keep screens going.

Isn't the second one generally considered to be much better?

Gameplay wise, no contest, but I think the original's story is much better. Ties into SMT2, of all things, and has Rasputin.

2's great too, just not as.

It was dirt cheap for months until Raidou 2 was announced, then the price skyrocketed.

Only (desirable) games I can think of that're missing are the DemiKids/Devil Children titles.

Sold me on the GBA. Guilty pleasure of mine, and Dark is great.

Yeah, now this is a thread I can get behind. Not what I'll play first, I still haven't beaten P4, might just wait for the vita version. I might replay Nocturne. It's all up in the air right now.

I'm a latecomer to the series - having started with Persona 3 in Summer 2011 - but not even a year ago, the series was something I read or heard about in passing but never had any interest in. Today, I own almost every North American release (with the exception of Revelations: Persona, Persona 2: Eternal Punishment, Raidou 1 and the highly regarded Jack Bros.) and it is without a doubt my favourite RPG series. The combination of Kazuma Kaneko's art style, contemporary/obscure settings, use of religion & mythology, dark/"gothic" tones and the emphasis on mechanics/systems always made each game unique when compared to other RPG series as well as games in other SMT subseries. Whether you're comparing gameplay & mechanics or themes & settings, the diversity between each subseries is something you don't see in other megaseries like Final Fantasy or .hack.

I put myself in a bind where I've started every game in the series I own, put in a moderate amount of time into each, but haven't actually finished or made any considerable progress in any of them. I plan on finishing Persona 4, Digital Devil Saga 1 and Nocturne by October.

Have you tried any of the portable games? They might be a bit easier to finish, if only because you can have them on the go. I have a game of Devil Survivor: Overclocked going right now, while I forum browse at my desk.

Huh, strange coincidence I decided to finally play one of these for the first time after hearing so much about them but never having played the series. And this is from someone who started playing RPGs in the late 80s on PC and then DQI on the NES on up through Ys on the TG-CD and then onto modern JRPG and WRPGs.

Playing FES on Vita through PSP emulation, will see if I can take some screenshots while I play.

Do you mean Persona 3 Portable? FES is a PS2 game, but it is available on the PS3 via PS2 classics.

Great thread! I'm a late comer to the series, as I was introduced to it with Nocturne several years ago. It was due to all the raving about the atmosphere, strategy, and difficulty that lead me to pick it up a little after release. I was one of many who got creamed by Matador since I simply didn't understand the amount of preparation that battles sometimes required, along with the fact that buffs/debuffs are actually useful (and often times necessary) in order to vanquish many of the bosses.

I picked up Persona 3 next and beat it on normal mode. After that, I gave Nocturne another go since I felt I better understood the base mechanics of these games. I beat it on Normal mode and loved every minute of it. I've gone on to beat almost all of the US released games on harder difficulty, and I relish the adventure in each one.

About two years ago or so I tried to play either SMT 1 or 2 with a fan translation patch, but I couldn't get into the awkward first person perspective (I never grew up playing first person RPGs either, only top-down JRPGs). I've since gotten into Strange Journey, and I'm willing to bet that that was just the game I needed to ease myself into the more demanding 16 bit games. I plan on giving them a go sometime soon. My fiance and I will be moving to Japan in a year as well, so I also plan to pick up a SFC and some of these games to work on my language skills if they're affordable.

I really love this series :D I only wish I could have grew up on it. I'm currently playing through P3P on my Vita. The first hour was a bit harsh with the transition to the cursor, but I'm enjoying the game way more now then I did before. I always enjoyed P3 and P4 equally, each having different pros and cons. I think I enjoy P3P more than P4, because it fixed a lot of the problems I had (though I did enjoy the strategy that came with the inability to control characters... that was actually a perk for me. Despite that, I still refuse to play without direct commands since I'm given the option, so I'm not really sure where I stand anymore!) I also just beat Persona 2 on the PSP (I always forget which one it is). Solid game, I would love to see some mechanics return from that. I also think that having played that, I could get more into the negotiation system in SMT 1/2 more easily than I could originally since I was so used to Nocturne prior.

Yeah, Strange Journey is a big love letter to 1&2. If you can handle that, 1&2 are doable. Problem is, they're very obtuse about where to go and what to do, especially SMT2.

I prefer the first game myself(better MessianVSGaian, as opposed to Messians ruling the world), but both are great.

The intro of 3 becomes twice as amazing if you're familiar with the Gaian/Messian war from SMT1&2.

I love the time setting, it's really something that's relatively unexplored by RPGs, and adding the occult/supernatural aspect just makes it that much neater.

The Raidou games seriously have some of the best settings and overall art direction in all RPGs. Kaneko demon juxtaposition with 1920s cities never gets old. Pre-rendered backgrounds for life!
I'm in sort of a bind where I've started every game in the series I own, put in a moderate amount of time into each, but haven't actually finished or made any considerable progress in any of them.

This is definitely a pattern I've noticed among a lot of Megaten players. I think I'm on the high end of games where I've seen the credits simply by beating all the NA released games except for the ones on Nintendo portables (Strange Journey excepted) and Eternal Punishment (why did I pass this up back in the day!?)

I'll only be peeking in this thread every once in a while cuz I'm afraid of spoilers, but looking forward to reading new impressions of the games I've already beaten.

cj_iwakura

Sadly, I've already spoiled the little connections between the games, but it's actually made me even more determined to get into them at some point!

Well, it's not too big a deal in 3. 1 and 2 are very close, but 3's more like(prologue spoiler)

Messians and Gaians being stupid. Hikawa shows up.

You know what, screw it. I'LL KILL ALL OF YOU.

Hikawa spoiler maybe (regarding the previous games)?
I remember reading that Hikawa was the MC from SMT2. Was this more speculation, or was there some good evidence for it? I can't really remember, I'd have to go back and read it.... something about the MC being cursed in SMT 2 to relive the rebirths of the earth/universe/whatever, and this is in fact Hikawa

Weren't DDS1&2 announced for PS2 classics? Any word on that?

That'd be great if it hit the US. I've still yet to beat DDS2... which I have, but my cat put some solid gashes in my DDS1 disc when I was near the end. (Or maybe something else did it... it had to be the cat, since I will every so often leave a CD sitting face-down on a table for a few hours in stead of putting it up immediately). I just got another copy of it last year but I haven't gotten around to playing it yet since I plan on restarting at this point.

Also a late fan to the series, got in at Persona 3, then Nocturne, Persona 2 EP, DDS1&2, and Persona 4.

Need to restart Strange Journey, and i'm currently playing Devil Survivor 2 / Persona 2 IS PSP...

Didnt really like Persona 1...so based on that, think i'd be able to enjoy the older SNES titles? I like first person RPGs...but the dungeons have to at least look interesting.

Well, I loved all the Persona games and Strange journey but disliked a number of things about the PS1 copy of Persona 1. Never played the PSP version. I plan to try it again sometime soon. The dungeons in the SNES game I played (still can't remember if it was 1 or 2) were about as interesting as Persona 1's dungeons, visually speaking, from what I recall. No frills really :p

I love Strange Journey and would really like to finish it, but I've gotten stuck several times on the later dungeons. It's not the difficulty, but rather that I've had to look up completed maps to progress the story. Anyone else have this issue, or am I missing something? :(

Some of the maps are brutal, but I never looked up any.

You shouldn't have to look up maps if you're actually approaching dungeons with the desire to fill the maps out completely to begin with. If you do that, then you should never need to look anything up. It's this mindset that also made me love Eridanus, instead of loathe it as so many others apparently do.

Wait, there are people that don't try to uncover entire maps in games?..... But why? :(

I like filling out the maps and had no issues with the first three or so dungeons, but then I ran into some instances where you couldn't find the hidden door unless you faced it, and it wasn't a dead end. That's what has thrown me for a loop, and I'm not sure if I'm missing a detection device or something.

Do you mean Persona 3 Portable? FES is a PS2 game, but it is available on the PS3 via PS2 classics.

Yes, sorry. One of the problems of the series is keeping all the SKUs straight. This is something that FF actually did farely well until all the -2 and what not started confusing things...

Actually now that I think about it more FF is just as screwy with spinoffs but confirmation bias makes it easier to understand ;).

I gotta finish Innocent Sin PSP. I'm in Gold but I kinda... stopped... playing. In my defense, I've already completed the PSX/fan translation so it isn't important to me to finish as would an EP PSP announcement run would. But I do still need to finish it to see the Atlus translation to completion.

I see a lot of disdain for first-person RPGs, but a lot of it seems to come from people who just don't have a lot of experience with those kinds of games. I would like to invite everybody here who has played through SMT3 before and has a new cycle save to give the first-person camera mode a try on the new cycle, because it makes the game feel so much greater. It seems really obvious to me that the game was designed with that in mind, based on the way the dungeons are designed. Especially the Amala Labyrinth.

I tried that, but I miss looking at the Demi-Fiend too much.

Nice OP. Love the Junes stuff.

Might play the SFC version of Shin Megami Tensei off and on when I have time. Too busy at the moment, and I'm busy with my FFMQ playthrough as well. Or Devil Children since I have one of those games sitting around here. Those are fun. I've never played them in English, though. I think two of them came out in NA?

Aaaand obviously I'm going to play Persona 4: Golden when it comes out here, so that'll count too.

Has Atlus JP done anything? I notice they've never really been the anniversary hype type of company, which is kind of respectable.
