Marvel shares new info about their console plans, Spider-Man will be ongoing series

Jay Ong has done two more interviews about Marvel's upcoming plans:
http://venturebeat.com/2016/06/16/j...-return-to-blockbuster-games-with-spider-man/
http://www.gamesindustry.biz/articles/2016-06-15-spider-man-leads-marvels-epic-new-console-strategy

Summary:
  • Jay's team is specifically focused on console-style games for Marvel. The mobile and social stuff is already hitting it out of the park, so his group is dedicated to making their console games great again.
  • Insomniac/Sony's Spider-Man series will be the only console Spider-Man series going forward. They want to find excellent teams and then dedicate the IPs to them so they can focus on quality. That's not to say Spider-Man can't be in a cross-over game, but you won't see something like Activision console Spider-Man games coming out alongside these. Jay explicitly says "The future of the Spider-Man console games is with Sony and Insomniac."
  • Movie tie-in games are over for Marvel. This is the same as their mobile strategy. All games will be given lengthy development cycles with all the budget they need and have no concerns about hitting a specific date tied to a movie/comic book/whatever. Marvel is very clear that developers cannot be rushed or underfunded if they're going to make great games.
  • That said, Jay notes that on the mobile side, the games tend to have tie-in events when films or certain initiatives like Women of Marvel launch. He doesn't explicitly commit to this happening on the console side, since it probably varies a lot per game, but don't be super shocked if you have downloadable skins or DLC for a game when a movie or comic book initiative comes out, especially if it's a living product.
  • When asked about whether Marvel's console games will have cross-overs and cameos like the films do, he states "The world's full of surprises. You never know."
  • Jay notes that in the past, they used to take about 30% of console game opportunities that are presented to them. These days it's more like 10%.
  • He's also clear that Marvel will only work with developers who they think will make excellent, top tier titles instead of just "good" games. So far their two publicly announced partners are Insomniac and Telltale. He speaks very fondly of the LEGO games, but IIRC that's run out of the mobile licensing division.
  • Marvel will also only work with developers who are clearly very excited about the IP itself instead of just the IP's money making potential. He notes that he can usually tell within the first 30 seconds if someone is actually passionate about the IP in question.
  • There's an implication that the publishing partner is also important to them. I imagine this is especially true for retail games.
  • Jay mentions that the success of the films and the success of their top mobile games, along with the break away from the movie game model, has resulted in way more developers being interested in working with them. He mentions that developers have even gotten more open to the idea during his two year tenure as titles like Marvel: Contest of Champions have crossed $200 million.
  • As for working with Insomniac specifically, Jay mentions that they're only 10 minutes away from the studio and 10 minutes away from Sony as well, so that they're in contact every day, which they think is very helpful for getting their new initiative going well. They also openly admit that Spider-Man is the most commercially successful superhero so they're more than happy to start with him.
  • Jay notes they have several other console games in development that will be revealed over the upcoming years. I probably wouldn't expect an immediate impending announcement (beyond perhaps unveiling Telltale's game) since he wasn't teasing any more reveals soon.

If there's a MVGU, I wonder how console exclusivity will work. Is it all Marvel franchises with Sony or just Spider-Man?

They specifically say the future of it is with Sony and Insomniac, so probably not.

That suchs, but one can hope.

I do like how he's able to tell if the developers are in it for the money. Hope that'll bring some quality games.

Sounds great, sign me up. I hope that Spider-Man is just a special case being exclusive though. I hope that does not continue with other Marvel properties.

i wonder if sony/marvel worked out deals for more than just spiderman. I have mentioned before that i can see thor/hulk from god of war team and sucker punch could work on avengers type game with multiple characters and each with one specific power.

So they're basically taking after Warner Bros' approach of how they handle their IPs within a gaming context, essentially treating them as their own subsidiary franchises to cultivate from the ground up rather than relying mostly on brand recognition from movies and such as leverage, because they know that shit is no longer effective enough in the market.

Ita nice to hear they won't focus on movie tie ins after the Civil War fiasco with Avengers Academy. That's not so say I wouldn't like to see those plot lines brought in.

Movie tie ins have always been weird to me because I can't really recall any selling well. The only one I actually enjoyed was a Monsters Inc one on PsOne and it was just a demo lmao

I didn't really get the sense that they had another game with Sony, but the interview didn't rule that (or another console vendor) out.

I'm surprised they wouldn't consider publishing the games themselves. Perhaps they will if this initiative is successful.
Disney just jettisoned their entire console games publishing division after talking about how much better it is for them to just license to experts.

Telltale self publishes their games so presumably that is not published by Marvel either.

I really hope they change their stance on this. Good games can still be made and be played across multiple platforms. Granted, I have a PS4 and have no problem playing the upcoming Spider-Man game, but I feel like it's extremely limiting by keeping it exclusive with Sony. Having other consoles involved, even if later on down the line, seems like a better call for the fans.

*EDIT: It would be interesting if they assigned different character to different manufacturers. For example, Spidey would be Sony, Ironman would be Microsoft, and Captain America would be Nintendo. Or something like that.

This is great news for Marvel games, and will probably be great for the industry in terms of the money flowing in. That being said, I just hope that these types of deals mean that great studios like Insomniac become larger to accommodate these types of games, instead of devoting entire development cycles to what could potentially be a "MCU" instead of making original games around original IP.

Great news!

While they're at it, they could also remaster Marvel Ultimate Alliance 1+2 (I saw the news about the ratings for these games in Taiwan...I hope it's true).

And also release a console version of Marvel Heroes.

I like spider-man

I don't believe you.

This has me excited. I don't need the MGU to function like the MCU where the whole point is to lead into Avengers style games. I just want great games ala the Arkham series across the different IPs. Sad that Sony isn't at least going PS4/PC with the Spider Man game to let others play it, but that won't stop me from enjoying it.

Hopefully Marvel is as committed as that summary makes them sound, if so we should be getting some great games!

I guess as long as they don't milk the IP to death, keep it fresh, and keep it selling...this could be a very good, secure deal for Insomniac, in terms of being a bankable wage-earner for a longer period.

M-rated Wolverine developed by Platinum. The good Platinum, not the TMNT one.

M-rated Deadpool game by Ninja Theory.

M-rated Punisher game by the dudes who made Spec-Ops: The Line.

They don't really need Sony to make a Game with Imsoniac, so I wonder why they lock their biggest IP behind a exclusiv agreement. I know there was the rumour that the game licence was part of the Spiderman Movie agreement, but i don't think this was confirmed.

Hmm makes me wonder if more than just Spiderman could wind up exclusive to Sony. I'm not saying I want them to but the way he talks about them being close and always in communication that can very well be the case

Give sucker punch a captain America game lol

Platinum is like the Targaryan family in Game of Thrones. Every time Platinum makes a game, the gods flip a coin to see if it's a hit or a flop.

We'll likely never know for sure.

Who exactly owns Spiderman?

Actually now that I think about it, this is what I want to know too.

I mean, Marvel/Disney owns his property in comics, tv shows, and now movies, but what if Sony worked a deal out for the franchise on video games in return for the deal for movie rights going back to Marvel Studios?

If the partnership works,w e could potentially even see Disney working with Sony on other things since they dont have a game studio any more.

Yfw Disney and Sony vs Nintendo and Universal.
vs Microsoft and Six Flags

I don't think they're looking at it from the perspective of "We need to assign our IPs to different consoles" as "Who is willing to pay us a big royalty fee and still make a high quality game?"

Honestly, I don't think what is keeping this deal exclusive with Sony is some sort of 'want' on their part; the speculation has always been that Sony fought for the deal during the negotiations for Spider-man entering the MCU.
