PJ Sidescroller is the best original PS3 scrolling shmup, by far. OK, way to sell it short, the competition is of course abysmal, but the game is really great. Controls are sharp, gameplay is meaty, enemy and bullet patterns are clever and don't require too much rote memorization (can be solved by quick reflexes and quick thinking), visual aesthetics are perfectly realized - the game practically looks like it's running on a vector rendering hardware rather than a pixel based screen, music is sublime and relaxing. Their fluid engine is used for spilling them over enemies to destroy them, to create dynamic mazes in which you have to navigate away from lava and for damage cooldown in the water.

Seriously, the game is almost impossible to put down. It is also very much a non-esoteric game, it's not like PJ Eden where you need to have a bone for an experimental games to like it. It's more like Shooter or Monsters, where anyone who's a fan of the genre could enjoy it.

I'm getting a bit tired of fake retro vector graphics. Looks like Gravity Crash and TerRover. Thenagain it has HFB's music and is made by Q-Games...

Even though I've liked every Pixeljunk game besides Monsters (don't like TD games) and this game reminds me a lot of possibly my favorite shmup of all time, Gradius V, I'm still a bit hesitant to buy this since there's no demo, no reviews, and no detailed impressions at all on GAF.

Edit: Actually, I just saw one poster in the PS store thread with some good impressions on the game. Will probably buy.

Haven't played co-op yet, but if you are a fan of shooters I would pick it up. Not too much bullet hell torture porn either. Checkpoints are well placed, bosses are fun and most have multiple stages. Visuals are @__@

Holy shit this game looks like an orgasm on screen. If only Q developed for all platforms...And by all platforms I mean Steam releases..... :(

I wanna play this game so badly but I'm in Japan and I've no idea when it's getting released. So anybody wanna exchange a 20 US dollar PSN card for 2 1,000 yen PSN cards?

PM me if you're interested.

It'll be out in Japan in a couple of weeks... we rushed the submission process in the US so people could make use of the PSN recent campaign they have over there. (it's also why they get a day 1 patch for some trc violation - nothing to do with the game btw, just logistics and alert type stuff - and Japan doesn't), still I think it was worth rushing it through.

I'm kind of in the same boat. I haven't even bought Shooter 2 yet (loved the first one).

It's not a sequel and is an entirely different game really, so grab it if you want to play a fresh side scrolling shoot-em-up with tons of action :)
It might even encourage you to go back and finish up Shooter 2.

We will be releasing a demo in a few weeks! It takes a few more resources to prepare the demo, and a whole new submission process.

Sweet. I had figured you guys were just not going to bother, glad to hear otherwise. This has actually swayed me to just buying the game outright once I get home from work.

That's much appreciated! You definitely won't regret it and everybody who enjoy themselves playing sidescroller makes the PixelJunk team really happy :)

Can't wait for the EU release tomorrow. Shooter 1 and 2 have also been excellent games by PJ, so getting this is an absolute must.

local co-op yes, with shared score and lives so you're going to have to work together!

Hi Dylan, yeah? :)

Have been talking to you on twitter (Gavin), asked about co-op on twitter and GAF for a quick reply heh!

Will get this the moment it goes online. :)

Looks brilliant.
Love the way the graphics perfectly seem to emulate early arcade shooters at times.
Something other games with a similar graphical style have attempted, but never got quite right.
Only a few hours to go. :D

chubigans

y'all should be ashamed
I have zero time for this game right now, but bought it anyways to support q-games. Best of luck on the launch HiVision!

I really hope Q games make some Vita titles in addition to their PSN games.

This looks a lot better than I thought it would. Very, very nice.

Not really feeling this one. It seems to be focusing on the part of Shooter that I didn't like so much (the fighting)

I'm still chiseling away at PixelJunk Shooter 2 (near the end), along with some other games I bought over the last few weeks, but this looks so cool that I just might have to squeeze it into my playlist as well.

i'm still hesitant to buy this, as i am quite the L7 weenie when it comes to these types of games. you guys say it's not quite "bullet hell" but the trailers scare me.

let me put it this way, i can deal with 1942 on NES or 1943(?) in the arcades, but most others are just too hard. i can't multitask very well at all. (although i think i did alright with Biohazard Battle on the genesis back in the day.)

funny thing is i have exactly enough dollars in my PSN wallet to buy this with PS+ discount. so many games in my back log but MAN are those screens pretty...

I'm in same boat but I was told there's an easy mode straight from the off so I should be ok :)
Now just hurry up PS Store in uk and let me buy it.

Commanche - we have a casual mode, and we also have generous checkpoints. If you remember in those old games, you lose your lives and that's it, well we let you continue from the last checkpoint even if you lose all your lives; your score and weapons are reset. The game is challenging but it shouldn't be frustrating at all... it's addictive instead.

hmmm, well i like the sound of that. also didn't know it was 1080p@60fps. consider it purchased!

it doesn't happen to have the custom soundtrack feature built in, does it? seems like devs stopped including that a while back because of memory constraints or something. O__O

Will get this downloaded tonight. How do you guys keep producing these titles to such a high standard? I love the Pixel Junk series.
