Right, Card. I was struggling to think of one that affected me personally.
I love Ender's Game, the Speaker trilogy, and even the Shadow saga. His message in all of those books was always consistent too -- one of understanding and tolerance of the 'other.' To find out that he was such an intolerant prick in real life hurt.
That said, all of the child wedding stuff in his books was always... weird. When I found out about his real life views, it was a bit of an 'a-ha' moment.
Sure, and it probably comes from a good place, but it's still a deadly opinion to have. So, disappointed.

The answer is a bit generic, but JonTron definitely fits this bill for me.
In fact a lot of the YouTube animators' community is this, whether it's full bigotry (hotdiggitydemon) or mere namby-pamby both sidesism (Harry Partridge). The fact that no one on YouTube ever wants to address any of this is pretty depressing.
If I ever found out Danny from the Game Grumps was a big pos that would be soul crushing, he added a lot of heart to the show.

Even though it's not as extreme as Jon's case, it still sucks to see HDD making an ass of himself on twitter with shitty comments or having Partridge making really bad criticisms of "censorship" where it only fuels the "SJWs are ruining media!!!" conspiracy. Really is a shame they have the humour and talent only to use it for the worst things.
Oh my god, yeah. I warily stuck around during the dickwolves thing only to then find out Mike is transphobic. Stopped reading the webcomic and sold all my PA books/merch. I know there was an apology and a donation to charity and all that, but fool me twice, shame on me.
H3H3 for me, they were the only group I've ever really cared about that truly soured me on them. Admittedly their case came mostly from ignorance rather than genuine hatred, but the quick succession of defending Pewdiepie, not saying anything about JonTron, and that blatantly false attack on the WSJ's reporters made it impossible for me to respect them anymore. Their downfall, where uninformed pseudo-political content became the norm rather than the exception in their work, has basically led me to stop watching all entertainment youtubers and focus on more academic/curated videos on the site.
that's definitely one. They had a couple of hits and used to get quite a bit of play in that nostalgic Linkin Park way but now they have been purged from history. I feel bad for the other guys who probably could've lived on that success for years to come.
First thing I thought of. "Start Something" was in my permanent CD rotation for a long time, but now I can't listen to any of their stuff anymore. Dumbass stuff like being anti-vax is one thing, but actions like Watkins' are beyond the pale.

His videos got me to try out some games I would have never looked at, listen to some interesting podcasts/videos, and he just seemed like an overall cool dude.
CoolGamesInc. even gave me some great ideas for projects that I kinda don't want to make anymore after all this.
Also, JonTron and Tom DeLonge. One is a fucking idiot and the other one is lost in alien research. Why?! -_-

I was even turning my head away awkwardly at some of his other shit saying I could separate art from the artist. Others called me out on my bullshit but they didn't realize just how much I loved his content for years and years.
Then the full on white supremacist shit came and I just couldn't ignore it anymore. Was it worth it Jon? You gained absolutely nothing from this besides lose the support of many from the industry, and gained the support of edgy white kids who think you should be able to say what you want online.

My first real-world example was arriving at high school to find a colleague of mine that I had been going to school with since elementary school under heat for publishing a "Hitler was a great leader because he really rallied his country together (but let me conveniently ignore the means by which he rose to political power and followed through on ambitions of racial extermination)" style article in the school newspaper. He vehemently defended it in the aftermath. Really tried to make it seem rosy and neutral like he did some astonishingly noble thing rallying post-WWI Germany to greatness by pure virtue of leadership.
I wasn't close friends with him for that entire time, but he never, ever struck me as much of a white supremacist up until that point. I just kind of completely cut association with him then and haven't heard from or seen him since graduating high school.

You know, this is me as well. All my favourite YouTube channels these days are the thoughtful personalities who are making video essays from the most mundane to the most compelling subjects out there. Extra Creditz, Lindsey Ellis, Nerdwriter, kaptiankristian, Idea Channel, Folding Ideas, Arlo, Hbomberguy, Errant Signal, Ethos, CGPGrey, Noah Cadwell-Gervais, MrBTounge, and Innuendo Studios.
All those channels are great. I mostly moved on from all those hot take gamer guy comedic channels a long time ago but still like the occasional chill LP group like Vinesauce and SBFP.

My first personal experience was in high school. Had a female friend in math class who was really sweet to me. One day while the teacher was preparing for the day's lesson, A male classmate that sat near me made a heart gesture with his hands to me as a joke and I did the same in return. I then noticed that the girl saw this and gave me the dirtiest look which told so much about her. I think this happened the same year I realized I was gay, so that really hurt and I couldn't look at her the same way.
