Both the Xbox One and PS4 version of Battlefield 4 have been showcased running at 720p resolution and 60 FPS during trade shows, but as confirmed by Frostbite Technical Director Johan Andersson on Twitter, it runs at a higher resolution in the PS4 developer environment and the final resolution will be apparent when the game will launch (which, mind you, is not a confirmation that the retail PS4 version will run at a resolution over 720p. It just means that it’ll be optimized before launch, and then we’ll see).
Can Xbox One users planning to get the game hope for the same treatment? Apparently not, as confirmed by an “EA representative in charge” to the Japanese site Game*Spark, that got hands on time with the game at Eurogamer Expo.
According to said EA rep, the Xbox One retail version of the game will still run at 720p , 60 fps, the same as the alpha version showcased at Eurogamer Expo.
In addition to that Game*Spark’s writer mentions that graphics “look blurred and a little flat, probably due to lower resolution textures and somewhat worse lighting compared to the PC version”.

Not everything is negative though, as the writer mentions that he paid particular attention to the stability of the framerate during his hands-on time, and it was smooth. No remarkable frame rate drops were visible except during sudden changes of the point of view during crowded fights.
He concludes by saying that despite the flaws mentioned above he did not feel dissatisfied after standing in line for an hour to play ten minutes, and the feel of the game is exactly the same as the PC and PS4 version, so it’ll definitely be a “must buy” for those considering to buy the console.

That said, since I’ve learned to take what representatives on show floors say with a bit of a grain of salt, I sent a mail to our contacts at EA asking for further confirmation, and I’ll keep you posted if I receive anything noteworthy.

special thanks to

I'm guessing that the PS4 version will have the higher resolution when optimized but maybe not 1080

Update* (from orginal source)

Google translate:

After a review of the product QA personnel of DICE booth , it was that the frame rate and resolution of the PS4 version product version and Xbox One that is aimed at the same . We modify the contents of the article to match. The final specification is unknown until it is officially published information from EA / DICE.

At the bottom of the GameSpark article there is an update. Now, I don't speak Japanese, so this is Google Translate, but:

Just read the update on that article. Seems they are be aiming for resolution and framerate parity which is expected but pretty damn shitty for PS4 owners if that's the case. Unless they manage to hit that 1080P 60fps on both.

Update 2: (dualshockers translates the original sources update to be more clear)
http://www.dualshockers.com/2013/09...lution-for-battlefield-4-on-xbox-one-and-ps4/
Earlier today we reported about an article by the Japanese site Game*Spark that mentioned that an Electronic Arts “representative in charge” told them that the retail version of Battlefield 4 for Xbox One would run at 720p and 60 frames per second.
The original article was just updated with the following:
After the review of the product, during a Q&A session with the personnel at the DICE booth, we learned that the developer aims to have the same frame rate and resolution for the Xbox One and PS4 retail versions. We modified the contents of the article to match. Final specifications are unknown until officially published by EA DICE.
As I stated at the end of the previous article, it’s always better to take what reps say with a grain of salt. Future Xbox One users needn’t worry, at least for now, there’s till hope for a higher resolution version for you too.

Update 3: (Technical Director on Frostbite at DICE Twitter) back to square one

Did someone mention games would see a downgrade from E3?

HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

I'm actually serious.

edit: MS needs to parachute it's engineers into D.I.C.E. ASAP. The Xbox One is much more capable, but the unoptimal decisions are going to bite in the ass.

It doesn't sound bad, but i'm not sure how much of a difference the resolution will make ?

Anyone got any 720pvs900p screens for comparison ?

Any chance that PS4 will be 1080p & 60 FPS or no? I know it said optimized resolution but I'm not quite exactly sure what that will actually translate to. If so though, huge deal.

That's about 50% more pixels on PS4 if the second statement is true.

I can't for the life of me remember where I heard that percentage before.

It's bad if one of the most popular franchises are running at 720p at launch. Think about what's going to happen for BF5? Pretty much either even lower resolution or ~same graphics. I'm sure that in this gen it won't take as long for the devs to "learn to be more efficient" as it did in the last gen.

With a couple of cuts the PS4 can run at 1080p on a mix of Very high / Ultra, but I think DICE will aim for 900p so they can keep frame drops to a minimum.

Maybe my reading comprehension has left me but.. i still don't see any real confirmation from EA anywhere.

This. Not that I care one way or another(I'll just get whatever version is better) but it seems like these FUD threads have been popping up non-stop.

Let's do some meaningful discussion now:
According to said EA rep, the Xbox One retail version of the game will still run at 720p , 60 fps, the same as the alpha version showcased at Eurogamer Expo.

When did EA say that? I don't trust dualshockers

I don't get the hubbub. A bunch of games run on lower resolution on the xbox 360 to tradeoff for performance. It's the same thing here.

Well, 1080p if over 2.25x the pixels than 720p and PS4 is nowhere 2.25x more powerful than XB1. So if PS4 version would run at 1080p, the graphics would at least have to be turned down quite a bit. So probably no. 1600x900 (1.56x over 720p) is probable.Though I think it will be a bit lower than that still.

Make the PS4 version minimum 900p and I'll consider it. Really though it should be 1080p, but I'll settle for lower given the is a launch title. 720p can forget about it though.
