Sega PC ports campaign continues with petition (Vanquish, Bayonetta, VF5)

I don't know, can we maybe get some popular YT guys behind this? Like TB? He's a massive Platinum fan.

edit: wait, doesn't he have some boycott against Sega? :<

TB is and it's been discussed. Unfortunately, unless his policy has changed, he is still boycotting Sega content due to Sega's Shining Force debacle.

I was actually going to message him when I saw some activity on his feed, but it might be better off if we didn't.

Couldn't hurt to try, I'm actually pretty sure his video helped push a decent percentage of the Dark Souls petition votes, as his videos get hundreds of thousands of views.
Not sure if his Sega boycott thing is still going on.

I think it would be worth a shot to convince Totalbiscuit to get on board, it seems like the boycott he had in place has been lifted.

It's nice to want things but who the fuck should port all these games?

We aren't asking for all the games to be released simultaneously, are we now? SEGA has ported a lot games over the years - even some rather unexpected titles such as Viking: Battle for Asgard and House of the Dead, I am sure that they can allocate a small group of developers to do a few more.

Even during the Twitter campaign a few weeks ago, r/Games was so against this idea.

The post just fell off the top page, I just can't comprehend why this would be such an issue.

1,200 signatures on the petition.

Hmm, ultra protective console fanboys?

I think one thing that was going for the Dark Souls petition that this one lacks is Blighttown. The prospect of the playing the game without the horrible performance issues was a huge draw for existing owners as much as those who didn't own a Xbox 360 or PS3 at the time.

Vanquished at 60 fps is the closest parallel here.

Terribad Bayonetta on PS3 might help us too I'd wager.

I was about to mention, though I have to ask (since I own the 360 version), how bad or rather how much was it improved post patch?

Something I may have missed in the discussion, but any reason Resonance of Fate isn't included as a candidate?

Patch fixed loading. Framerate and image quality were not improved.

Bayo on PS3, even post-patch, is inferior. There's still tons of slowdowns and stutters during gameplay/cutscenes.

I have both version and I get my 360 hooked only for this game, hell, it's one of the only reasons why I'm keeping my 360. Because I just can't play it on PS3 after playing the 360 version. D:

Nah, mods removed it again even after I changed the wording.

Tough to notice since they don't actually delete the post, just remove it from the r/games sub-reddit.

I signed it, good luck GAF.

Remember to retweet and stop by on Reddit if you want to help us a bit more.

Soon you will be unplugging that 360 permanently.

I found this reply to one of Grief's reddit postings rather humorous:

John Cheng (President of Sega America) here.

Hey everybody! Sega America is really super stoked at your interest in ports to PC for our great legacy titles. As a longtime fan of Virtua Fighter 5 myself, I completely understand the desire to bring these fabulous titles to a larger audience!

Unfortunately, in mid-1999, shortly before Isao Okawa announced our shift to developing third-party software the Evil God Cthulu appeared to Isao and demanded that we never port these games to PC. According to the terms of our blood-pact with the Evil God we cannot fulfill your request. Sorry.

Proof that it's me. (I think this may be a banned meme here on gaf so I'm not actually linking it)

I understand that. And obviously it's Sega who makes the decisions anyway, and they're in a much better position to know what is or isn't possible. I'm just disappointed by the sudden alteration of what seemed to be a list of three games that the majority agreed upon. And it seems others agree, but they don't want make a fuss about it because it would ruin the chances of the petition. Something I understand, especially after the time I spent posting on Sega's own forum to get their community to participate in the petition. While TaroYamada could easily alter the petition to include VC back in to the main list (and simply have 4 titles), something tells me that's unlikely to happen, despite how much the support the game got in the Twitter campaign and the original thread. And I don't want to end up in a position where I'm accused of trying to ruin the fan effort.

I guess now that the petition turned out the way it did, the best thing Valkyria Chronicles fans can do now is sign the petition and ask for the game specifically in the comments. Hopefully, they're still motivated to do so, despite the game being removed from Grief's original three choices.

I want to note the bolded, though of course it's reasonable from the vantage point of the petition writer to guess what's most reasonable. And secondly, if the point behind the petition is the selection of low hanging fruit, why choose three titles at once? The idea of low hanging fruit is in the interest of expedience - unless these are all contracted out at once (unlikely) I don't suppose they'll all be quick jobs once approved. We would probably be waiting a year before Sega has satisfactory data points on first choices, and in the meantime the -other- choices cease to exist as a relevant part of the movement. Besides, even as someone who supports the biggest of longshots, it's unreasonable to think Sega is going to just-so connect the dots unless they explicitly express that this is something they may pursue. We would be looking at ports becoming "viable" years down the line for something like VC. And if the ports fail commercially, those who abdicated their wishes in the interests of what they saw as pragmatism now lost their chance.

The decision to choose titles has splintered the movement and I don't think this is all that debatable, since at its inception the sentiment was clearly general and not about specific titles to choose as representative of the movement. This is even reflected in some of the signature reasons posted, which include people asking for Persona, Jet Set Radio Future, and Shenmue among other things. But if a constraint were necessary, the primary determinant should have been fan demand. That being said, I don't begrudge the success of this movement (I can't rain on the parade, the movement is beyond any one person at this point,) and I don't need a response to this or anything, but in spite of the good intentions behind the campaign I have issues with how it's evolved. Besides, I wouldn't do so, as more games for more people, the better.

We aren't asking for all the games to be released simultaneously, are we now? SEGA has ported a lot games over the years - even some rather unexpected titles such as Viking: Battle for Asgard and House of the Dead, I am sure that they can allocate a small group of developers to do a few more.

See, over the years. a port now for something like VC would have been opportune, as the franchise is merely in the doldrums. In a couple of years, it is dead.

Something I may have missed in the discussion, but any reason Resonance of Fate isn't included as a candidate?

Quite a few people initially did want Resonance of Fate. Resonance of Fate was made with the "first generation" or iteration of tri-Ace's ASKA engine, designed for PS3, 360, and PC development. The same thing they used for Infinite Undiscovery and I think Star Ocean 4. They've since demoed a second generation a couple of years ago but I don't believe anything came of it, and I don't believe the 2nd ASKA engine was used for the FFXIII sequels.

Taro Yamada you might wanna add the reasons as to why these 3 games were picked , so we don't have more people confusing this as some kind of popularity contest.

Both Vanquish and Bayo run on the same engine Revengeance does and is already ported to the PC. And VF 5S runs on Windows. Clearly these are not very expensive projects at all.

VC on the other hand has been exclusive to Sony platforms for quite a while and would cost more to port over. In fact Sony might even have a deal with Sega for the games exclusivity , otherwise we would have easily seen a 3DS version somewhere.

VC characters are on the 3DS via Project X Zone though.

I've tried, it's in the petition, it's been spread across multiple pages. The people who don't understand why we went this way will continue to not understand why we went this way, I'll talk to grief and see if he thinks we should drum something up for the OP.

It's not a bad suggestion I'm just convinced that it may not change much.

SEGANerds story up, I'll round all these reports up in the OP here soon probably.

I really liked this part of the article. I can't stress this enough. No one respects those that make lowbrow or ignorant comments. I know I don't listen to comments on Neogaf, youtube, reddit, twitter, etc that come off ignorant or needlessly attacking.

Please, don’t outrage on the phrases you tweet or text on social networks about this, not everyone does it, but some users do. It is clear that you want your voice to be heard, but remember that there are people who work at SEGA’s community team, they are persons too and are there to help you in getting your message to the proper people, final word does not rely on the community team, so it really helps their day and the campaign if you are polite on your say, right?

About as good as an explanation as you can get.

Ikaruga got greenlighted in 2 weeks. If Cave were smart enough they would start porting thier games right now.

Unfortunately the problem with that is that it doesn't have much of a long term future. Cave's software is full price because they want to keep it as premium value, but the moment they start releasing their catalog at 20/30$ (and the latter would be a big stretch for these kind of games) it'd be difficult to go back to the higher prices. Which would be ok if it expanded their userbase, of course, but eventually people who don't play an already niche genre for high scores and 1cc-s will most likely just stop buying them altogether. I suppose region-locking for Japan could help, but it's still risky.

As for the petition, has anyone e-mailed news sites/blogs? Rock-Paper-Shotgun, Kotaku, etc, even if they're not PC-specific, can't really hurt.

My suggestion maybe to get the point across more is to port the ports of older games SEGA has gotten around to doing years later on Steam.

Typing of the Dead Overkill: http://store.steampowered.com/app/246580/
Sonic Adventure 2: http://store.steampowered.com/app/213610/
Condemned Criminal Origins: http://store.steampowered.com/app/4720/
Sonic CD: http://store.steampowered.com/app/200940/
NiGHTS into Dreams: http://store.steampowered.com/app/219950/
Jet Set Radio: http://store.steampowered.com/app/205950/

(and get Binary Domain, it was a more recent game that was pretty great: http://store.steampowered.com/app/203750/ )

definitely signed, I want to play a few console games (namely bayonetta, vanquish and dragons dogma) but simply couldn't handle the issues on PS3. I could pickup a 360 for them but PC will always be the better alternative.

I own every one of these on steam including pretty much everything else. I would buy them again if they came out on GOG.

Unfortunately I only have Binary Domain and Jet Set Radio out of those options, most of those offerings don't even appeal to me.

It ended up getting removed by mods due to a no petition rule.

I wasn't disputing that, just addressing his claim.
