What is SuperBot's "very amazing" PlayStation 3 exclusive?

Sony silent on Smash Bros. rival rumour.

Sony has declined to comment on a rumour that it is making a PlayStation 3 exclusive Smash Bros. rival.

The console manufacturer told Eurogamer "we do not comment on rumour or speculation" when quizzed about the game, reportedly in the works at US developer SuperBot Entertainment.

Word of the mystery brawler first emerged on The Paul Gale Network, which claimed it featured a number of Sony mascots, including Parappa the Rappa (Parappa the Rapper), Kratos (God of War), Sly Cooper (Sly Cooper), Nathan Drake (Uncharted), Sweet Tooth (Twisted Metal), Colonel Mael Radec (Killzone) and Fat Princess (Fat Princess).

The report also mentioned a Sandover Village stage (from Jak & Daxter), Hot Shots Golf characters in stage backgrounds, a LittleBigPlanet stage and a Buzz! trivia mini-game. A James Bond character is also mentioned.

Current speculation points to SuperBot Entertainment, a Culver City, California-based studio confirmed to be working on a "very amazing PS3 game" for Sony Computer Entertainment America, as developer of the game.

SuperBot's website describes the company as "an exclusive developer of Sony Computer Entertainment America" and reveals it is "currently in production of a yet-to-be announced PS3 title".

According to a job advert, SuperBot is after a senior combat designer with "a strong familiarity with fighting games and fighting game theory".

Another job advert asks for a lead designer with "a strong familiarity with online mode and matchmaking design as they apply to console gaming".

On SuperBot's website are pictures of arcade fighting sticks.

Update:

this guy is senior level designer. Some comments from his twitter. https://twitter.com/#!/TheAuburnSky

1.Our capture station and waiting area - Parappa is a permanent resident http://twitpic.com/6a60jz [Backup]

2.The character artist sitting a row ahead of mine is modeling polygonal female boobies. Carry on...

Then posted this pic

3.Our studio fighters getting their brawl on http://twitpic.com/6au76k [Backup]

4.Racing to finish a level design doc for today's review - map layout is looking spiffy if I do say so myself.

5.Slam! Second level design pitch approved by our studio leads! Now onto Sony Santa Monica for a final green light.

6.In the middle of a skype video interview with a level design candidate from Osaka, Japan.

7.New Sony Playstation commercial vaguely foreshadowing our soon to be announced title - http://www.youtube.com/watch?feature=player_embedded&v=HBuK3EcY6vk

8.Checking out the original art assets from a Sony IP title we're appropriating for my level - very cool seeing this environment in raw form.

9.Fuck you clown!

(THIS more or less confirms it)

And looking at his previous work there are no fighting games.

Character player blablablabla (from Kratos)

Seems that someone is going to get fired

Just been thinking and are there enough Sony Exclusive characters to make up a roster of 35+ (and not all bald marine types)?

edit - apparently there are!! But what I really mean is are there really enough characters thematically similar that could piece together into a game quite well without making it ridiculous?

Sure there are. However, they're a very mixed bag, more so than Nintendo's, and that may make things a little more difficult.

As difficult as it was combining the different Nintendo worlds, it will be a piece of cake compared to Sony's characters.

Kratos ripping Sly Cooper apart?

Done well, it could be awesome. Not done well and it will be a disaster. I wonder how far out the announcement is.

Sony doesn't have enough memorable characters for this.

I would be extremely interested in what type of cohesive art style they could fit all their characters in, hard to imagine a light hearted character like Parappa fighting someone like Kratos.

If its 'gritty' enough, I look forward to this type of fighting game finally getting some respect from the dudebro crowd. Love 4 player vs fighters, they are a lot of fun.

You can tell Sackoy has some sick thoughts in his head, the things he will do to Kratos.

Sony have so so many IP's, this could work.

The only bald space marine type there is with them is Nathan Hale.

I meant outside that list (and perhaps not space marine) with the likes of the Resistance series, but thinking about it now, there aren't that many.

I think the only stumbling block with these is thematically Nintendos characters fit together quite well as they don't try to be relaistic, but when you have someone Parappa The Rapper fighting the main guy from Infamous, or Daxter fighting Nathan Drake things may get ludicrous

I don't think their characters are strong or lovable enough to carry the game like Nintendo's are.

I'd say a third of Nintendo's characters at least in Brawl were filler or novelty characters.

What franchises could this possibly pull from by the way? I can totally imagine Sully and Drake as well as at least one villain from the Uncharted series, but will they have to go down the route of lots of characters from every game to fill the roster?

The bigger question than roster is, with the "strong familiarity with fighting games and fighting game theory" and the pictures of arcade sticks on their webpage, will it play like a fighting game or a Smash Bros?

I'll second, third, whatever we're up to on Sony's mascot not being lovable or well known enough to pull this off. Not mention is the game going to be really grim given Killzone, Resistance and GOW or cute given Hot Shots Golf, Little Big Planet and Sly Cooper.

It occurs to me that the maiden in black from Demon's Souls is a sony character. If they can get her VA back...

Ok, that would make me buy a copy.

I'm going to enjoy watching this bomb. The only thing Smash Bros-like games not named Smash Bros. have in common is that they're bomba's.

You could just about quote everything to the left of your post.

Even though they are third party Solid Snake and Dante really need to be in this. Knowing how crazy licensing is though... it will probably never happen. Crash is also obligatory.

I would hope a fighting crossover wouldn't just harvest content from 1 generation given Sony's been around for 3 and have a tonne of IPs ...
