Where the eff are my PS3 Custom Soundtracks?!

Hey Gaf, remember this flash from the past:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QnaxkncuPj8#t=03m30s

That was June 30, 2008. Today is October 1, 2009, 16 months later. I don't know about you, but I've NEVER seen this feature functioning on my own Playstation3. There are some games with custom soundtrack support (Burnout Paradise, WipeoutHD), but they implement their own systems, and none are ideal.

So what the heck happened with this? Did Sony just scrap it?

Agreed. It takes the piss. I don't even bother checking any more, I just assume the feature is missing. They should have made it mandatory.

If cross-game voice chat ends up being handled in a similar way then I will rage with the force of a thousand nerds.

Wasn't there a huge hubbub about how a major pub threw a shitfit and barred sony from doing that because their older games would have crashed or something like that? Or am i mixing things up?

I'd like to see it used more often, but it isn't necessarily Sony's fault since it's up to the developers to inplement it.

yep, they need to make it mandatory, as obviously no one has supported it (save KZ2).

When I got my Slim, I was surprised it wasn't there. I kept looking around for it. And Wipeout's implementation sucks too, since I don't want to wait 10 hours for my library to copy over and it can't stream over the network.

I know it works in SF4, Marvel vs Capcom and Midnight Club LA. It is really disappointing that there aren't more games using it. I think people spent so much time bitching about fixing the clock that they forgot to ask for something like this that would actually be useful. I love listening to my music while playing games.

Motorstorm is the only game that I can think of that feature this kind of custom sound track. But it doesn't work when you play online :lol

It's a shame because offline, the soundtrack is managed very well, you can skip tracks and control the volume with the dpad, which is fucking awesome. I don't understand why they haven't patched this yet. The game is awesome, but these custom soundtrack problems is just crazy.

To be honnest I think that no CST support is optimal yet for racing game. I wish I could just add track to the game's playlist instead of completely replacing it. Like, when I play Wipeout I want to listen to techno stuff, when I play Motorstorm or Burnout I want some rock stuff, and those games have some pretty good soundtrack already, why would I need to download the games soundtrack when there is everything on the disc?

The clock was kinda ridiculous. But I would definitely rather have custom soundtracks. It's great for games online and for games with terrible/no music. I thought it was crazy that Pixel Junk Monsters, a game with amazing music, actually allows this while Resistance 2 doesn't.

I can only hope MAG supports it.

I thought it was just up to the developer? The latest game to use it is that PSN title about searching for clues around the world? Interpol is it? I think its in more games that people realize.

I can personally confirm that one, but it doesn't seem to work all the time.

I don't understand the need for customised soundtracks. As far as I'm concerned in game music is part of the gaming experience and I don't see any reason to change it.

Yeah, custom soundtracks should be implemented per game, otherwise it's just playing random music over the xmb.
And that's bad...how exactly?

Sports, racing, puzzle games? I always played with a custom soundtrack on for NHL 09 on my 360. And no one's forcing you to use it.

I'm not complaining, most of the games from 2009 I've played have this. The only exceptions are story-driven singleplayer experiences, that often sport a great soundtrack of their own. Who'd want custom soundtracks on Final Fantasy XIII anyway?

To be fair, I've been bitching about the clock and custom soundtracks since launch. It took what two years for the clock?

Sometimes it is fun to re-play the game using variations of the in-game music, or using related music. Notable example for me included using this version of Windmill Isle Night in Sonic Unleashed, this version of Splash Wave & this other version of Splash Wave in Outrun Online Arcade, and finally, using Sea Gate & this version of This Is My Happiness in Sega Superstars Tennis. At the very least, it is always nice to have the option, I personally love it. :D When it comes to my PS3, I play Super Stardust HD exclusively with the SMG OST playing behind it. :D

VERY few games, from what I have noticed, have it implemented. Really sad that it is done on a case by case basis based on software/devs.

I've never cared for this feature anyway. Why aren't you guys complaining that you want custom soundtracks in movies -- it amounts to the same thing, nearly... :lol

I agree, it's a bummer that you can't do this in all games. Every multiplayer game ought to allow it for sure. I use it in Motorstorm PR and Burnout Paradise all the time. Next gen Sony better get this right, and from this day forward they should REQUIRE all devs put it in.

Sony doesnt require it. Its up to the devs to implement it. I believe implementing it takes up memory, and if they need that memory for the game, its not going in. Sony isnt all to blame.

Apparently, Sony has had this implemented at a OS level for a long time.

Yeah it sucks, and it's another case of Sony lagging behind Microsoft.

Could be worse, though. Look at the Wii. Can it even still play MP3s? I know they had an update that had something to do with another file type.

You can only play the music file in the photo channel at last check. I would give Sony the benefit that you can play music while doing other things such as Life with Playstation, browsing the net, and even in some games.

I completely agree when we're talking about Bioshock or Uncharted or Metal Gear. But some games can really be enhanced by it. For instance, Fallout3 had a good soundtrack, but the tracklist was too brief. If I were playing on 360 or PC, I could've dug out some Hank Williams and Perry Como tunes to cut down the repetition.

NHL 10 has it as well. It's pretty well done too. Being able to set specific songs to play for each teams goals is nice. You can even set a song to play when your BAP character scores. I was very impressed when I saw how deep EA went with it.

This is what I've always assumed on the matter. Same deal with YouTube support, etc.

If they don't have to, they probably won't. I have no clue if it's more technically feasible on the 360 or not, but making it mandatory was a good idea.

speaking of custom soundtracks, i don't get why the music has to shut off when you're in the menus and on the psn store and in the web browser and stuff like that... does HOME have custom soundtracks yet?

More like PSN is capitalist, XBL is socialist. Xbox requires you to do everything, but PlayStation just makes things available as the market demands, and if there's no money in it, the sellers cut the cost and the corner.

you can't put a price on sparks
part of the game you buy is the soundtrack. custom soundtracks are dumb except for games where they only have licensed music.

Microsoft places most of its app functionality on a higher level of the operating system, so everything is always running inside that 32MB OS and is always accessible from the Blade. Sony, for whatever reason (and this I'll never understand since XMB is much more bloated in RAM hogging and is much simpler in graphics) deals with OS functions as separate applications that do not multitask, so XMB has to quit and restart all the time as you go in and out of functions. The music player stop when you move into a function that doesn't support it or that boots as its own application, and so that includes the web browser and the store. Sony's original mock-ups for PS3's OS showed them browsing the web for game help while video chatting while playing the game. I don't think the interface was ever really meant to be so schizophrenic and to actually multitask that much, but the end result sure was a letdown for anybody who thought Sony had learned something from Xbox and the year-long headstart Xbox 360 had.

Yeah, it's a real bummer. I love the feature enough that I don't even consider online games for the PS3. I use custom soundtracks all the when I'm XBL, and even when I play sports and racing games offline.

Sony should require it for all future games.

I see you have never played Dead Rising with Queen's "Don't stop me now" playing. For 12 hours non-stop.
