As far as I can tell, this is the first Fallout related trademark filed by Zenimax, all other Fallout trademarks are owned by Bethesda. Well, actually Zenimax filed a trademark application in 2009 for a Fallout logo, but it was for whatever reason abandoned (applicant filed an express abandonment), so I don't think it counts.

Bethesda currently owns ten live Fallout trademarks, the most recent being filed in January last year for "Entertainment services in the nature of an on-going television program set in a post-nuclear apocalyptic world".

Why these particular applications are filed by Zenimax directly I don't know, maybe they've changed their policy in trademark filings? Anyway, there you have it. Hopefully it's the start to the next entry in the cherished series and not simply some mobile application where you can scan IRL soda bottle barcodes or something.

Maybe they are trying to cash in on the popularity it has with merchandise? Saw lots of Nuka Cola shirts on sale at PAX East. Maybe Zeni wants that money instead? IDK, I'm probably just blabbing, but just filing something for Nuka Cola really doesn't mean much in context of a possible Fallout 4 reason.

Steve, the dog with no powers that we let hang out with us all for some reason
Maybe they are avoiding some franchise exploit, like that mexican company that trademarked and sold a Duff beer with the logo and all.

Preorder Nuka Colas for Fallout 4 please

I think they're just trying to protect their property from being exploited so this probably has nothing to do with anything.

Merchandising. Merchandising.
