Media Create Sales: Week 27, 2017 (Jul 03 - Jul 09)

You need to consider that MH XX Nintendo Switch Vers. should be compared with the other two late HD-ports in the MH franchise (Famitsu)

PS3 Monster Hunter Freedom 3 HD Ver. 282.960 441.375 Capcom 8/25/2011
WIU Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate 110.149 224.986 Capcom 12/8/2012

Even without what's going on with Capcom and the MH franchise, the game's ceiling can't be realistically too high.

Still, I can see Comgnet preorders not being exactly truthful for several reasons, like bundles not getting counted, the console (potentially) having much higher sales compared to the current levels leading to more customers potentially purchasing it without preorders.

You're right that we should compare MHXX Switch with the games above. And of course the market has shrunk, etc. But you don't take the portable aspect of the Switch into consideration. That, and the fact that there aren't too many exciting big titles for the Switch yet, will help MHXX Switch to get reasonable sales in the long term, I believe. Pre-orders may be low, but I think that the game will have some pretty decent legs (just like the 3DS version of MHXX, and just like the two console ports above).

The switch game is coming by end of fiscal year so its most likely a enhanced port of some kind.

Is that confirmed?

Falcom has explained why they made The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III a PS4 exclusive (well, presumably it will get a PC version) and how that's been going:

DualShockers said:
Dualshockers: Now that The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III has been revealed, can you provide an update on the game’s development?

Falcom: As you know, the Trails of Cold Steel series is moving from PlayStation 3 to PlayStation 4, and that’s turning out to be a very difficult task. One big change for Falcom is that up until now, when it comes to graphics, movies, sound, and the packaging, we’ve been able to do that all in-house with a team of 50 people. However, now that we’ve switched to PS4, we have found that we have to leave some of the tasks to outside companies to take care of.

Dualshockers: Was there criticism from fans about The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III being announced as a PlayStation 4 exclusive?

Falcom: Some people did kind of complain because the series had originally been on a different platform, but what we really want to do is make sure that we are reaching the largest amount of fans as possible. The truth of the matter is, most fans have moved on to the PlayStation 4. That said, when the game comes out, we are going to look at reactions and continue to make decisions based on that.

Another thing to consider is that our games are popular abroad, and especially in those areas fans have really moved on to PlayStation 4. So that also weighed in on our decision.

Dualshockers: So would you like to see The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III in the west?

Falcom: Absolutely, even compared to a few years ago, in terms of revenue, the foreign market has become incredibly large, way more than I would have ever expecte. So it only stems from reason that going forward I believe our titles will release in the west.

Isn't Famitusu caught up with MC for Switch hardware sales??
Maybe???
I mean sounds reasonable since some of these stores had big restocks.
It's interesting for sure.

When that was posted a week or so back, I was surprised to hear him comment that way about Western revenue. Maybe games like Cold Steel are much more popular in the West than I thought originally. No way to tell though, we never get local sales milestones and no one in NPD threads ever talks about Falcom games. :(

What 3rd party release in Japan (we could talk world wide, but this is Media Create) are you even talking about?

I'm not sure what you are expecting. There isn't any huge 3rd party games and some of the more notable ones like Bomberman have done well.

Remember MC only tracks retail releases (as far as I'm aware). How many third party retail releases have their been recently? We have seen quite a few cases of digital titles selling extremely well on the Switch, most recently with Kamiko.

You do realize that there hasn't been any new third party releases for the Switch recently right? It's no surprise that first party games chart when they are the newest and biggest games.

No recent third party games? Didnt LCU released 13 days ago in Japan? Revealed to have charted at #9 last week and just a week later is already out of the top 20 consisting of a bunch of ~2k entries.

But yes, eventually the other half of the dilemma to overcome is the Switch just having a weak library in terms of mainstream titles. My point is that few third party AND ARMS could be seeing better numbers than what we're seeing now had there been adequate supply. Inadequate supply can be limiting no matter what the library is like. I am not the first person here to posit that ARMS will see a bump when presumably Nintendo releases more hardware with Splatoon.

I am not sure what you are trying to argue here. Are you saying that Bomberman and Seiken Densetu Collection would have sold more on PS4?

Where did I imply anything about the PS4? Nintendo still sells the 3DS. They're putting forth some effort in keeping it around for a bit longer. Third parties still have plenty of reason to look to it. Especially with it being a handheld in Japan. Delaying prospective projects or holding off for now while considering mobile in the meantime continues to be a option we're seeing chosen as well.

Famitsu and MC were just about equal last week (1040k and 1041k), so they're not compensating. It is a difference in tracking, which incidentally would align better with reports of higher shipments. I'm not taking Famitsu for gospel just because it's higher for once, though, will stick with MC myself.

Yes:

Anime News Network said:
Bandai Namco Group released its March 2017 balance sheet presentation on Wednesday and revealed that Tales, Taiko no Tatsujin, and Dragon Ball Xenoverse 2 (tentatively titled) games are planned for release for the Nintendo Switch during the current fiscal year. The company's 2017 fiscal year began on April 1 and ends on March 31, 2018.

Their games do okay on Steam (SteamSpy). TitS and Ys Origin actually have amazing sales numbers. And that's only PC (which might have better sales due to discounts, but still!).

PREDICTION LEAGUE DRAGON QUEST XI EDITION

Predict how much these titles will sell in the week (from Jul 24 to Jul 30):

[PS4] PlayStation 4 Hardware (7 days) - 125k
[3DS] Nintendo 3DS Hardware (7 days) - 95k
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI (2 days) - 755k
[3DS] Dragon Quest XI (2 days) - 955k

Aostia

El Capitan Todd
Since there was a question of what counts as big, I thought I'd try looking at this from a different angle.

I took the 3DS from its launch through March of the next year (due to how fiscal years work), and came up with the following Japanese third party titles that managed to sell 200K or more.

3DS:

Code:
Professor Layton and the Miracle Mask 117,859 / 396,914
One Piece: Unlimited Cruise SP 76,578 / 326,737
Monster Hunter 3 Ultimate [All Versions]	471,055 / 1,929,447
Inazuma Eleven Go: Light / Shadow 141,458 / 455,172
Resident Evil: Revelations [All Versions]	160,575 / 302,965
Harvest Moon: A New Beginning 79,809 / 264,042
Kingdom Hearts 3D: Dream Drop Distance 230,189 / 357,790

I repeated this with the PS4 and the Vita.

PS4:

Code:
Dragon Quest Heroes: The World Tree's Woe and the Blight Below	255,292 / 360,698

Vita:

Code:
Persona 4: Golden [All Versions] 152,499 / 345,377
Hatsune Miku: Project Diva f [All Versions]	158,009 / 227,492

The Vita does get an additional three or four months in this comparison, but it doesn't add any games.

I guess my question would be "Where do we feel the Switch will end up compared to these systems by April 2018?"

Put in this perspective I would say miles under 3ds and in between ps4 and vita

PS4 10k ahead PS3 means if it does 29k next week then it will stay ahead one more week... that way the lead after DQXI release will probably increase due near the holiday period for PS4 and slow period for PS3.

PS4 will probably beat PS3 in 5m and 6m targets.

SINoALICE had quite a strong debut. The main other note is that BanG Dream has been holding pretty well.

I'm not sure who at Sega is responsible for not making an f2p mobile Miku game yet, but given how Idolmaster and BanG Dream do, they're exceptionally bad at their job.

Interesting, do you see the PS4 baseline being higher than that of the PS3s from here on out? If so can it reach 10 million units?

Gundam VS. Oh how had the giant had fallen lol. It is going to be funny seeing ARMS doing much better than Gundam Versus when Gundam brand WW is doing really well nowadays while it flounder in Japan there. Bamco better sort their shit ASAP.

Splatoon 2 next week is going to be crazy lol. Lets hope Ninty can take advantage of that as much as possible with Switch stocks.

Falcom has explained why they made The Legend of Heroes: Trails of Cold Steel III a PS4 exclusive (well, presumably it will get a PC version) and how that's been going:

Source: http://www.dualshockers.com/nihon-falcom-interview-nintendo-switch-ys-viii/
This kinda feels like he's talking more an the the PS3 -> PS4 change than dropping the Vita

When that was posted a week or so back, I was surprised to hear him comment that way about Western revenue. Maybe games like Cold Steel are much more popular in the West than I thought originally. No way to tell though, we never get local sales milestones and no one in NPD threads ever talks about Falcom games. :(
We did get that 350k figure for the Trails series when XSEED announced the 3rd
Sales are good but probably below Japan numbers (meanwhile apparently Celceta did better outside of Japan)

So...1.5?

I'm guessing he means total unit sales for games over 200K, since I'm not sure anything else would make sense.

Like adding those together we'd get between 360K and 570K (the two Vita games combined), whereas the 3DS games would add up to like 4 million or something.

Switch would have been another flop if not for the intense first party support in the first year.

Third parties are really sleeping on it. I don't blame them for not supporting Switch right from the start but now it's time to announce some projects.

Talking to Level 5, Atlus and Marvelous.

Capcom is being Capcom.

Square Enix is the only third party who is really behind the system (not fully but good for a Nintendo hardware).

When is the Fall Direct?

So you think it'll have at most 2 third party titles that sell 200k by April 2018?

Which games could be seen as able to sell more than 200K right now?
Not even MHXX looking at the situation and at previous hd ports
Not even dqxi considering that we don't even know when is coming out and how the version is
Tales of..? It barely exists and it is not that on the Wii the brand new episodes sold so comfortably more than that number

I'm guessing he means total unit sales for games over 200K, since I'm not sure anything else would make sense.

Minecraft alone will be close to that number.

PREDICTION LEAGUE DRAGON QUEST XI EDITION

Predict how much these titles will sell in the week (from Jul 24 to Jul 30):

[PS4] PlayStation 4 Hardware (7 days) - 98.765
[3DS] Nintendo 3DS Hardware (7 days) - 78.901
[PS4] Dragon Quest XI (2 days) - 789.012
[3DS] Dragon Quest XI (2 days) - 987.654

Sure, but this one was about Japanese third parties specifically.

That said, Dragon Quest XI and Monster Hunter XX should manage that combined unless they're really having a dire performance.

Is there a reason that a lot of people in this thread seem so confident that DQXI will be released before April 2018? Some interview or something that I haven't seen?

EDIT: I'd be impressed if they actually released it that quickly (not that <8 months is actually quick) seeing as we know basically nothing about it at this point. I could definitely see it missing that window though, unless we've recently heard something different.

It looks it's a matter of time before Gundam Versus joins bomba bins. It already has bigger than normal discounts at online retailers and first week 60-80% sell-through doesn't inspire confidence after 60% of first day Media Create gave.

I'm pretty certain the only reason we know nothing about it is squareenix not wanting to kneecap the sales next week, being UE4 i cant imagine porting will take long (i wouldnt be surprised if its pretty far along already even)

It's certainly possible it doesn't come out. There are just so few third party Japanese Switch games we actually know about that it's pretty hard to have this discussion in general.

No recent third party games? Didnt LCU released 13 days ago in Japan? Revealed to have charted at #9 last week and just a week later is already out of the top 20 consisting of a bunch of ~2k entries.

Are you basing your conclusions on the fact that you consider LCU a big title that should have done much better in its re-release, or based on the fact its the only recent third party title and you want to talk about third party sales and thats all you have to use to support your hypothesis?

But yes, eventually the other half of the dilemma to overcome is the Switch just having a weak library in terms of mainstream titles. My point is that few third party AND ARMS could be seeing better numbers than what we're seeing now had there been adequate supply. Inadequate supply can be limiting no matter what the library is like. I am not the first person here to posit that ARMS will see a bump when presumably Nintendo releases more hardware with Splatoon.

In what reality does a port of LEGO City Undercover show any kind of legs on any platform in Japan?

Secondly, what do you propose Nintendo do exactly? They can't snap their fingers and have parts magically appear out of thin air.

LEGO City bombed, just like Disgaea 5 back in time, showing that third-party games can't sell on a Nintendo platform and thus they will cancel everything they had in works because they were all looking at how LCU of all games would perform.

I certainly accept that as a possibility (a good one at that) but a bunch of people here seem to think it's almost guaranteed to release before April '18, I was just curious what that confidence was based on.

Yeah that's a good point. I'm even curious if the number of announced games will be that much higher after TGS what with how slow JP third parties were adopting to the PS4.

Interesting, do you see the PS4 baseline being higher than that of the PS3s from here on out? If so can it reach 10 million units?

Do you expect the PS4 to stay on the market for a decade? Being par with the PS3 won't lead to PS3 LTDs unless the same time period is also realized.

If we expect it to take 18 months for major support to show up, it's likely we wouldn't hear about a lot of that until Spring 2018 if not August 2018, since a lot of Japanese games unveil a few months before release.

Ironically WB and NIS are the only third parties alongside KT and SE with a decent amount of games already announced in development for the console XD

Everyone's switching to mobile since the PS4 version didn't even chart xD

I'd say Ubisoft (Mario + Rabbids, Starlink, Steep, Rayman, Just Dance) and Bandai Namco (DB Xenoverse 2, Taiko, Tales, Namco Museum, One Piece, Pokken), despite not having anything at launch, have a notable amount in development as well (relative, of course).
