It does have that stink of "halfassed and pointless spinoff that publishers think can be used to 'test' the market for interest in the franchise but in reality mostly serves to hurt the reputation of said franchise" to it, doesn't it.
Where do you get the idea that it's halfassed or even pointless? With Lunar I could see that as it's been redone several times. The interview shows lots of promise and honestly Neverland has never done any wrong, unless you hate action rpgs and seeing your nostalgia crushed. In which case that can't be helped :p

I fail to understand the need to 'rewrite' anything. Incredibly disappointing. I'll keep an open mind, but my interest is already waning.

A closer look at the interview and seiyuu cast!

http://zepy.momotato.com/2009/11/18/new-lufia-game-details/

Maxim: Nakamura Yuuichi
Selena: Inoue Marina
Tia: Toyosaki Aki
Guy: Miyake Kenta
Heidekar: Namikawa Daisuke
Artea: Chiba Susumu
Lexus: Ogata Kenichi
Iris: Sawashiro Miyuki
Jimmy: Sugita Tomokazu
Jemmy: Hanazawa Kana
Gades: Konishi Katsuyuki
Dios: Ginga Banjou

Toyosaki Aki sure seems to be landing a lot more roles nowadays.

For you haters tho :lol

Turn based command battle systems aren’t new anymore, so we’re making it an action rpg now (Kojima)
Viva la revolution!

Lufia 2 can't help it if it has the most memorable cast of the series. Okay yes that's saying next to nothing but hey oh well. Even if they did an entirely new game with an original cast they'd still be under the Maxim and co's shadow and probably getting help from the descendants of their descendants or something. Plus the hero would have red hair and blah blah ugh yeah might as well just stick with what works.

Can't wait to see the new Ancient Cave as well. With the new combat system I can imagine playing that all day everyday forever.

It seems like it's hardly going to be anything like the original from how they talk about it, so I'm more concerned about this just being a fun Lufia game instead of living up to the original (well, with the exception of the ending).

While I really enjoyed all three Neverland Lufias, I'm still going to be cautiously optimistic.

The 3D route would've been balls to the walls awesome if it used that style similiar to Lufia II's artwork. That cover with Maxim was badass, I actually made my entire decision to buy the game based on that.

Whether or not Neverland does a good job with the concept (it seems at least somewhat likely, since they're a good developer working in an idiom at which they are well-practiced), it is hard to come up with any possible reason why S-E requesting an ARPG spinoff-remake-reimagining-thing of Lufia II is actually a better idea than just contacting Neverland and asking them to make a new Lufia game, like, actually in the style of the existing ones.

Well from the interview, it sounds like SE just wanted another Lufia game and gave Neverland the freedom to do whatever they want. And it seems it was Neverland that decided that it's an action rpg take on the 2nd entry. Given SE is looking to maybe make future bank on the franchise, that doesn't have anything to do with the changes. It looks Neverland is making these franchise changing decisions.

The team itself decided to go Action RPG it would seem. S-E seems to have said "here's the cup, now go crazy!"

Not trying to be a troll, but is anyone else sick of the JRPG migration to the portables? I'm glad we're getting FFXIII soon, but the BULK of JRPGs this generation are on portables and aside from a few specifically designed for that purpose, it's far less comfortable playing a game for extended periods of time looking down at one (or two) small screens, with orchestral soundtracks muted by small speakers, and my large Gaijin hands cramping up from too much PSP/DS. I'd rather be relaxing on my couch with a JRPG playing on my LCD TV with surround sound.

If you want cheap development costs, do it on Wii. I'm just so tired of waiting so long inbetween JRPG console releases and even longer for good ones (only "A tier" JRPG this gen as far as I'm concerned was Lost Odyssey and that's debatable).

I think with the right design, a new Lufia could be a good fit for a portable system. Dragon Quest, Kingdom Hearts, not so much...

Okay, in that case I take back both what I said about this being a lame publisher "test" and also (tentatively) what I said about it probably turning out good anyway because Neverland know what they're doing. :lol

Not thrilled about the action RPG route, but will reserve judgement. I'll get Golden Sun DS for my Lufia-ish 2D puzzly adventure.

Aww ick, it's DS 3D. :X (I saw a picture that might have been a scan, some please tell me if even mentioning scans is banned) That said, it didn't look TERRIBLE, and the character art itself is actually neat. I wonder how it will play.

Actually don't mind this game being an ARPG. If it was turn based for most fans I think the nostalgia glasses would be so thick no game can ever live up to that kind of expectation.

Yoshichan

And they made him a Lord of Cinder. Not for virtue, but for might. Such is a lord, I suppose. But here I ask. Do we have a sodding chance?
Just saw the scans. I'm buying a DS Lite when this game's going to be released.

RPG of 2010, FFXIII stands no chance in my world.

Looks good in the scans.

The whole Wave Device concept is interesting, since they serve the same role the Dual Blade originally had. I wonder if this means the Dual Blade has been written out? Also curious to see if Arek is going to have a more prominent role now, even if he's still a neutral party.

I wasn't even aware that Lufia had a story. The only bit that interested me was

The fact that Selan and Maxim marry and have a baby midway through the game. That was pretty cool

They should have just called this game 'Tia' and have it cover

Tia's journey back home when she is dumped, and her finding a new man

Well that reasoning is stupid as shit. Who cares if turn-based combat is no longer "new"? And besides, action-RPG is new? WTF

Japan has largely even up on consoles. America and Europe does not pick up the slack in sales of jrpgs so I'm not sure how they can work around that. I guess you have to hope for a handheld/console merger next gen.

A wonderfully reassuring thing to hear from a member of the production team that brought us Infinite Undiscovery! Turn-based is archaic, but IU is the new hotness.

Seriously, you can't just call a whole goddamn genre old.

Fuck the guy who said this first and made everyone else believe it

I loved Lufia back in the day, so even if this doesnt reach those standards for quality, as long as its a good game, thats enough for me :)

So its a remake-ish of Lufia 2 right?

I remember playing it way back when and being surprised when
The main childhood friend doesn't get the guy or tragically die midway through the game, but realizes she can never get what she wants and makes a conscious desicion to leave.
It's not something you see a lot in games

Yeah, playing it at such a young age and witnessing that you can't just call the game nostalgia. Games today still pale in comparison in story when it comes to Lufia. Grand adventure on an epic scale that contains every emotion possible. As long as the game doesn't lose that aspect it can still be a success to fans. And of course Ancient Cave.

I have so good memories of lufia II. I got the SNES cart the year it was released (thank you Nintendo Power). I was only 12 but damn was the game awesome (english is not even my first language!). The story was much more mature and emotional that the RPGs I could play at that time.
Tia gets heartbroken, Maxim marry Selan and have a child with her and dear god the ending. When their ghosts visit their baby and how it says that that night they were awaited at the celebration but they never came :(
. There was a lot of side stuff like the capsule monster, the ancient cave, the casino, the dragon eggs hunts. I remember being stuck at some of the infamous puzzles for a while at that time. The one in the mountain where there is a 3 x 3 grid of plant you have to cut down completely in a limited number of steps and the sliding panel puzzel thing was annoying. The music was so awesome especially the boss theme. It's also introduced the wild arms like tools system for puzzle solving. The game was hard if you didn't grind (well for a 12 years old :)). Oh god I remember being angry at that
stupid spider boss when you're looking for the glass apple.
The only sad thing I can remember is that my cart (US) had some glitches in it. I remember the ancient cave's boss to be extremely glitchy graphic wise and one of the item you can get in the casino (a statue I think?) would crash the game when used outside of battle. I think I haven't replayed this since 2000 :(. Time to plug back my SNES!

As for this remake well I'm disappointed that they are rewriting/changing the plot. Add to the fact that it's now an ARPG and you have a recipe for disaster.

Out of curiosity, doesn't the creation of a world that's different from the original, and has new/altered locations imply that they created an alternate timeline/world?

Like say, they do things in this that cause Ruins of Lore (and maybe the other two) to not have much (if any) continuity with the world of this one, even though they still have it with the SNES version?

I assume that was the intent if they're that serious about starting things over, but this happened to come to mind.

Replaying Lufia 2 right now...

God damn.

I was about to scream for happiness when I saw this thread title and then I saw your post.

Wtf is with these companies that have to change gameplay with sequels when it already worked just fine with the original games.

Exactly how I feel. Get so tired of this "turn-based is viewed as archaic, so we have to change it" bullshit.

I guess it's back to waiting (hoping) for the Lufia games to hit the VC.

At least it isn't an RTS..... *shudder*

Who is this Kojima fellow anyway? I have to say looking at his track record I'm not exactly filled with great confidence about this.

Thing is, I used to punish the shit out of him back in the days. What've happened to my JRPG skills :(... Oh, what happens if Tia dies in battle and you beat him?

In honor of this game being announced want to have a returning to Lufia 2 thread? My last one completely failed, but I think with enough people getting excited about this remake, I think we could be successful. I'm really excited to see what they do with this remake, as long as it's still a good game I'm all for it.

Then you honor the crappy storyline where Tia isn't strong enough to beat a Sinistral :)
