Resumes: Thief 4 Has Online, Is Using Unreal Engine 3, Other Info

So, after Eidos Montreal's mystery projects showed up, I decided to do some digging.

The bad news is that I couldn't really find anything about them. The good news is that I did find information about other things.

Since I decided most people would want to talk about Thi4f instead of the barebones mystery information, I felt this would be better in a new thread.

I have taken pictures of everything in case this information gets taken down.

Part 1: Thi4f

Unreal Engine 3:

These most likely relate to their third project, which is a new IP.

They could be their fifth project or Deus Ex 4 though, like the guy who seemed pretty involved with Deus Ex (including the DLC) and was just promoted up to game designer.

• Developing pre-production concepts into fully-designed systems (rewards schedule, shops, escape gates, public zones, etc.)

• Designing the side-content of the game's hub: activities, enticers, goals, flow and rewards

• Formulating the design guidelines for “extreme situations”; memorable scripted sequences with altered controls, camera and/or gameplay rules.

Celebrated single player games have included online play, and Unreal 3 can really shine when it's used well. Even taken together, this news is not enough to engage doom and gloom mode.

It was a modified version of a rather old Crystal Dynamics engine.

They might be switching though given Square Enix's big Unreal Engine 3 contract.
That makes sense then. Plus I'd assume they want to make the PC version in house. UE3 has support for all that DX11 stuff so they don't have to outsource.

You're new here, right?

Just trying to hold onto a little optimism. :p This news shouldn't be enough to engage doom and gloom mode, but it will anyway. Better?

That said, I wonder how they'll do multiplayer in Thief? Seems to me like the franchise is just begging for asymmetrical "cops and robbers" modes like Splinter Cell, Kane and Lynch, and the like.

Well, one of the resumes refers to "The City". I'm unsure if that's just a section of the game or the entire project.

If it is the entire project though, usually multiplayer and singleplayer share assets, so something that would work well in that kind of environment would be a likely choice.

NICE. Competitive stealth online is long overdue (was there ever one?) and coop stealth is very welcome as it was done in Conviction only.

So far so good.

First-person perspective or bust for Thief 4 please. Not too worried though, as back on Deadly Shadows Ion Storm/Eidos was clearly reacting to Splinter Cell and MGS (both at the peak of their powers back then, and both third-person stealth games) when they made Thief 3 in third-person by default. These days, first-person is all the rage.

After Assassin's Creed Brotherhood's online mode? I think there's a lot of potential here, although this is more about sneaking through the shadows than observing unusual behavior I'd think.

It seems to be third person.

I'd love this too. We need more brave games that decouple the first-person perspective from being strictly about shooting.

But still, will the ragdoll in this game be equally hilarious as Deadly Shadows'?

Get with the times, dude. Demon's Souls and Dark Souls have the "best" ragdolls now.

Ugh, I forgot that this had been posted a while back. Well, fingers crossed for full first-person support via a Back button toggle, a la Deadly Shadows, then.

Well, I don't think they ever actually weighed in on the camera perspective one way or the other, so it is possible.

What am I looking at in that shot? Is the setting actually "modern" this time? It's been rumored forever, and when I hear modern I hope the team is talented enough to make it an evolution of the Thief universe...and not simply our world with a couple of differences.

Stealth take-downs with the bow in third person? Kill me now. The game needs to have/requires a first person mode. It just wouldn't be the same if it only had a third person mode. :(

Online news has me very excited as it means we might finally get another spies vs mercs mode. God, that was amazing. Such a disappointment that Ubi cut it from the HD re-releases.

Doesn't look like a modern setting.

No problem. This one as well:

Notice he worked on the last level (is this an indication the game isn't far away from being unvealed?) and that his specialty is singleplayer, stealth-action, multipath, multisolution gameplay. :)

Thanks again.

I would be curious to know your source on that.

Update: It appears D’Astous has deleted the tweet and replaced it with a new one, this time not mentioning the “new and original IP” segment.

Original: Eidos Montreal General Manager Stephane D’Astous has revealed that the Deus Ex 3 and Thief 4 developer is working on a third and completely brand new project. It’s a “special” project, he’s also mentioned.

“Get the word out! Eidos Montreal is hiring AAA senior staff for its third project,” D’Astous wrote in a Twitter update. “A new & original IP. This project is going to be special!”

We can’t speculate what it’ll be because like he said, it’s completely new and original. We can only anticipate the project’s announcement.

I actually think UE3 is well suited for a Thief game. The type of gritty visuals that seem to come natural to the engine will work well for the game.

Just an FYI, the previous Thief game ran on Unreal Engine 2. So UE3 for the next game isn't that much of a surprise.
