Here's everthing so far:

Dr Sergio Canavero is a part of the Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group.

Kojima on Taboo:

The next project will challenge a certain type of taboo," he wrote. "If I mess up, I'll probably have to leave the industry. However, I don't want to pass by avoiding that. I turn 47 this year. It's been 24 years since I started making games. Today, I got an ally who would happily support me in that risk. Although it's just one person. For a start, it's good."

Procedure for the transplant named HEAVEN.

Person getting the transplant is a CG artist and a game development supervisor. https://www.xing.com/profile/Val_Spiridonov

Head transplant in MGS V?

Sergio is doing a talk in Cyprus which is presumably where the hospital in MGS V is. It's a location in the game anyway according to PC files.

Has a scientific article named The “Gemini” spinal cord fusion protocol: Reloaded http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/?linkname=pubmed_pmc_refs&from_uid=24244881

Sergio submitted this article on GEMINI just two days after MGS V was revealed. http://www.surgicalneurologyint.com...4;issue=2;spage=335;epage=342;aulast=Canavero

Dr Canavero believes that impossible is only a way of the mind. By changing perspective, everything becomes attainable.
He proved so when in three months at age 27 worked out the mechanism of one of the most intractable medical mysteries ever, central pain syndrome.

Just as more evidence that phantom pain is linked to the brain, I recall a report about a surgery done by Dr Sergio Canavero several years ago where a woman wound up with phantom pain in a 3rd arm that never existed. All from "tweaking" something in her brain and apparently messing up something with the brain's "map" of the body. Canavero has done a lot of good work, but there's always risk when you're on the cutting edge.

http://sci.rutgers.edu/forum/archive/index.php/t-44363.html

This is presumably the report: http://thejns.org/doi/pdf/10.3171/foc.1999.6.5.2 Titled Painful supernumerary phantom arm following motor cortex
stimulation for central poststroke pain.

Has a book: http://www.amazon.com/dp/1503243222/?tag=neogaf0e-20

Some of these chapter titles sound familiar.

Also what kind of doctor has photoshoots like this?

"Dr. Sergio Canavero" is supposed to be working at the "Turin Advanced Neuromodulation Group", but neither can I find that department's website, nor any mention of it or Canavero on the website of the University of Torino.

Most interesting!

So basically, this guy is
-Working for a non-organization
-Reported by a bunch of news sources and was on tedx (with the specific venue being an anagram for solid metals x)
-Working on many things regarding Phantom Pain
-has 11m of funding from an unknown source

And some other things. lol

Just a huge coincidence. Maybe Kojima had been following this doctor because of his work. Kojima is good like that.

My actual guess, btw, is that the doctor is not just a marketing campaign for MGSV, but was probably an inspiration for the game and they asked if they could use his likeness. I think a lot of this could easily be explained as Kojima drawing inspiration from reality and a real world interesting thing rather than the real world thing being an elaborate MGS marketing ploy.

A funny side story is that, should this indeed be a ruse, so many media outlets reported on the brain transplant story without doing any basic journalistic research and fact-checking whatsoever.

Italian media do that all the time ahah But I've more faith in the rest of the world, starting with Cambridge

edit: oh come on, anticipated .-.

(This 100%. But to pretend otherwise is more fun.)

Whether or not Kojima is involved, this guy is something else.

If Kojima somehow orchestrated some or all of this, it's the longest, biggest con he's ever done, not only fooling gamers, but the entire world press and media.

I have the same theory. Kojima probably drew his inspiration from him.

Youre saying Kojimas been preparing this that long?
/s

Anything that's been published since 1987 is potentially part of this. He's been in the biz for long enough to have widespread influence we're only getting the hang of now that he's leaving.

Okay, the "based off of this guy rather than an elaborate marketing trick" theory sounds a lot more likely.

...I'm on board.

This is why I have my doubts. This would ascend Kojima to a new level in marketing trolling, to a point that will pass all other marketing attempts.
Seriously. We've gone from "he used a guy to look like another guy" to "he snuck a guy into ted talks who tricked the worlds press and the science community at large."

Will there be a limited (1) edition where you get the head of the other guy that's donating his body instead of the arm?

So this Doctor is going to do a real-life head transplant. But that's not the weirdest part...

No, a head transplant is the weirdest part. Having something video game related as a connection or similarity is fine, but lets not act like kojima having something in a game is weirder than an actual head transplant.

Would be interesting if Kojima actually just thought he was quite a character (considering his very weird views) and got inspired thinking nobody would notice, but then the guy became publicly known because of this transplant attempt.

???? I'm having a LOT of trouble processing all this.

We have the doctor from the MGS TPP trailer looking completely like a real life doctor. He performs a head transplant, and we have a character in the trailer with bandages all over his head.....*mind liquidizes*
