What is Battle Rap?
Battle rap is a performance art focusing on lyricism, wordplay and delivery. Rhymes are delivered acapella in high pressure situations in an attempt to break down their opponent through personal shots, freestyled rebuttals, lyrical schemes and stage presence. Put simply, it's entertaining watching rappers berate and break down their opponents using creative rhymes in a competitive atmosphere where reputation is on the line. And because it's a dog-eat-dog scene, there's a constant pressure to survive or you face the end of your career.

Pretty new to battle rap culture myself. I've followed it casually for a long time, pretty much since the early days of YouTube, but started following it actively recently post Summer Madness 2. I thought maybe a thread to talk about it would be apt considering I've seen interest around GAF. Being it's competitive and all, I think it'd make for pretty good discussion for who beat who, etc. as well.

Leagues
Several leagues exist across North America and the world that play host to different local and foreign rappers taking the stage to square off. Some big ones:
  • Ultimate Rap League - New York's biggest league, and possibly the most prestigious in all of battle rap as the spiritual successor to the Smack DVD movement.
  • GrindTimeNow - The largest West Coast battle league.
  • King of the Dot - Canada's largest battle championship, centring in Toronto but featuring branches across the country.
  • Dont Flop - UK's largest battle league.
  • UW Battle League - Arsonal's own battle league

Recommended battles for people new to battle rap to check out:

Watch with GAF!
plug.dj is a website where people can watch YouTube videos together in sync, and often we use it for sessions where a bunch of GAFers get together and watch battles. There are no rules or expectations and everyone is welcome, just get in and play battles you like!

Fun fact: around the 17th century, battle rap more or less existed under the name of flyting in Europe. You can wikipedia it.

One of the best battles I've ever seen is The Saurus vs. Mac Lethal. Mostly freestyled and you could tell they were really enjoying one-upping each other.

I'm glad you made this thread, but you should put some classic thesaurus or illmaculate battles.

One of my favorite battles was DNA VS DISASTER. DNA really played the underdog role and came out on top.

Finally someone made an OP for this. Hollow is my fav.

Grindtime is dead (practically). Most of the rappers moved on to KotD/URL

Good OT yo. The Hollow vs Big T was a great battle, I'mma Hollow fan.
Hollow is the GOAT for me. I don't think dude has ever spit a wack verse, freestyles most of his stuff and pretty much ticks off every box for me.

You can ask my NYB n***as, I'm hot like J Flow was in Marcy,
And you gon' the L like you 'bout to go to Canarsie.

god. fucking. damn.

I'm glad you made this thread, but you should put some classic thesaurus or illmaculate battles.
I'm a battle rap noob! I like both of those dude's work though, but I'm not well versed enough to suggest their best. Got any recommendations? Even the stuff in OP is mostly recent Smack centric.

Mostly familiar with KotD. Watch a lot of battles on that. Kid Twist was one of my favorites.
Always liked Kid Twist myself, as cheesy as he can be, it's always entertaining.

Dizaster is painfully over rated. When dizaster got in DNA's face over some line and DNA retorted with something like "we're both battle rappers, everyone knows you're not about to hit me"... so good.

How do you not have Jin in here? One of the all time greats! Jin vs. Verse was one of the best ever. also he was actually freestyling, and does so constantly, much more impressive than spitting pre writtens.

IMO both Dizaster and DNA are overrated. Both suffer from copious amounts of filler. But at least DNA has some clever bars from time to time.

I can't remember a single line from Dizaster except for the Prince of Persia one.

Yessir! Dude's wordplay is hilariously crazy and crazy hilarious.

Thesaurus vs Illmac.

Plus the Jumpoff 2v2s are a great place to start so get some of the references.

That Jin vs Versus battle was hilarious

Jin - "I can tell you, I be analyzing his rhymes, he said "words connect words connect" like 6 times! Ayo! He said a bunch of shit just to make it rhyme!

Jin was amazing back in the day. Then Serious Jones killed him, but he bounced back by winning that 50K tourney, and then his battling career was ended by Iron Solomon. I hear Jin is crazy successful in China now.

Yeah, but regardless of how he did in rap battles, those guys can't touch him at all when it comes to freestyling, especially his delivery and awesome punch lines. He was all freestyle vs. iron solomon, you can say solomon is a better writer, but for sure not a better freestyler. I just that people still give these guys credit for things they don't do. People should be made 100% aware that these are battles of the pen as much as they are of the lyric. Jin's a freestyle genius, and you really can't say the same for pretty much anyone else posted on here.

Jin freestyle Friday compilation.

The egg roll and dumplings line was crazy.
Will add to OP in the morning. Most of Jin's stuff doesn't hold up all that good to me now but back in the day he was the fucking man and the first exposure to a lot of people through 106. And he definitely still has quotables from his time there.

I debated on QP vs. Soul Khan because.. well Soul Khan might give the wrong impression of battle rap, but I guess the more varied the perspectives the better :p And he's certainly unique and underrated.

Grind Time Now is mostly a Florida league now. The biggest West Coast league at the moment is actually KOTD West. It's run by Lush One, who was the dude who made Grind Time Westcoast so big.

Also, Soul Khan is a beast. He's got the ability to come with jokes or come with hard aggression.

JC and Chilla Jones is probably the best battle I've seen, maybe ever. Watched it like 4 times and each time I picked up something I didn't previously catch.

All better freestylers, IMO.

Jin used pre-meds in all his freestyle battles. Especially when rebutting lines about his race. Don't get me wrong, he is a great freestyler but his battles were never 100% off the top. Very few freestyle battlers ever did come completely off the top like that. It was mostly a mix of freestyled lines and premeditated punches.

All better freestylers, IMO.

I agree with this list minus Hollow. Hollow really does have a lot of gibberish in his freestyles and he doesn't have a lot of consistency either. His performance during the Jump-off 2v2's (Houston Division) really makes that clear.

And here I was thinking I was one of the only ones around here that followed this stuff. Good OT sir.

Here's one of the recent ones I enjoyed quite a bit. From a league I honestly haven't heard of before (dumb name as well) but none the less a great battle. Found out about it because I follow Daylyt's stuff.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TbwOCOCE3SU Daylyt vs CT
As usual, skip 3min in the video to actually watch it. Daylyt is a beast, highly suggest people check out some of his other battles.

Another quick one. If you follow battles a lot like me, its easy to find this shit hilarious. Purposefully bad bars battle from Don't Flop (UK) Two dudes I haven't heard of but I had quite a few laughs from this one
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNtw6Fon_QM

Soul Khan is really good. I haven't seen him battle in a long time though.

Followed the Dumbfoundead blueprint and retired. His plan the whole time was to get as much popularity off battling as he could then use that momentum to bring more attention to his music, which is pretty damn good to be honest. His group is called Brown Bag All Stars. They have a 90's east coast sound.

Give wrong impression of battle rap? wut

Soul Khan vs J Fox - The most uneven battle rap of all time. Soul Khan destroys his oppsition with incredible bars.

Rone vs Profit - Very funny and clever battle.

Who do you guys think is going to take the Rex vs. Hoffa rematch that's going on today? (I think?)

Honestly, I like Hoffa's style more but he's been shaky recently. Too many battles with too many weak rounds. Rex has a lot of momentum and I feel like he's probably prepared for this better than ever.
