PS3 launch event in France: guess which troll is banned until the first price drop

The launch events weren't good, but what do you expect if you offer limitless pre-orders with home delivery.

Last week wasn't the PS3 the highest pre-ordered console in history, unless these shops were lying, everyone's sat at home waiting for their PS3s.

Unless all the preorders were fake, we'll see in the sales thread.

UK - Good (not excellent sellout sony land FTW)
Spain - Excellent
France - Terrible
Germany - Meh
Switzerland - Poor

I can tell you the Irish launch went well, not a sell out, but quite a few lineups at midnight.

Ireland - Good

Any other countries want to sound off?
I think we should just wait for actual numbers and not go by a few pictures and news reports.

No not badly. But it is not the whirlwind that many expected this time last year.

It seems that the supply = demand so far. What will be interesting is sales over the next few weeks. It will probably track the US sales + a couple of k...

right... they are 1st, which is bad, because they were supposed to be even more 1st in sales? right... ehm.

oh maybe you have the sales numbers? Do you?

No, I don't. I do, however, know how to read the writing on the wall. You might try looking at, well...any of the reports that have been made thus far about the launch in France.

Threads like these are why I joined GAF. They bring out the most pathetic levels of desperation from the Keep Hope Alive! crowd.

I'm loving all the wii60 fanboys spinning this launch as a failure.

This looks to be the best euro launch since the GC. Plenty of stock and plenty of sales. If the PS3 doesnt become the biggest selling eurolaunch console then you guys can sell my left bollock on ebay.

Nope supply != demand so far. Supply > Demand, at least in the UK today.

Go to any website (gameplay.com, play.com, amazon.co.uk, game.co.uk) - all of whom have PS3s in stock. Argos Extra in Preston (for those who don't know, a catalogue shop where you can type in the product code to check the stock level) had 50 consoles in stock at 9:15 this morning and on my way home I checked a couple of hours ago and they still had 50 consoles in stock. They have 6 Premium & 6 Core 360s in stock and 0 Wiis in stock.

Now most people will likely go to dedicated games stores on launch day to get their PS3, but they haven't sold out either although I don't know their remaining stock levels.

But this isn't a knock against the PS3. It's important to remember that it IS £425, it IS March, the Brits are saving for their summer holidays at this time of year and Xmas is ages away. Sales of the PS3 will inevitably pick up by Christmas, and it's Sony's job between now and then to keep consumer's mindshare with the Playstation brand as they now have two extremely strong competitors.

Well it was more about launch events and turnout rather than sales at the moment, since that is all we have to go on right now.

Its weird how Spain and France are right next to each other... yet Spain loves Playstation 3 and France hates it.

Whats up with that?

I've bought my PAL PS3 this morning at 10:30...I was sure to be buy it quickly but no..30-40 people were waiting to buy it.By memory, the queue was longer than the 360 or Wii one (i have all three systems).
So everyone has his story :)

Edit : In France of course!!

I think the sales will continue strong over this weekend and they should get through a large portion of that launch stock, people know there are loads around so there is no big rush with them. My brother only decided to pick one up yesterday and went and pre ordered.

If they do not get through that stock Sony really is fubared IMO, because it would have to be some Christmas to make up for it.

By that time retailers and developers (who are watching EU very very closely) will have started to ditch them and scale back projects/shelve space...

I think the other problem is that we will never get actual figures from europe. So likely all we will have to go on is how many Sony themselves tell us have been sold.

People's stories always seem to reflect their general stance as well, though, so I don't really go by those all too often.

I just got back from going to the bank, I had to wait in traffic for 3 hours because of the sea of people buying a PS3 :( They all looked so happy.

I'm sorry but you aren't seeing the bigger picture...it doesn't matter how many it sells this weekend, but how many it will sell next month. It ha launched to a lukewarm reception at most locations and absolutely horrifically bad in France. Regardless of how many it sells, it is only selling to the hardcore and the rich...once this launch period passes, sales will fall in line to last just as it has in US and Japan.

But...if this launch really was this awful, I (almost) feel bad for Sony. What the hell happened??!! The PS2 was also priced ridiculously high but that didn't stop Europe from buying them.

The PS2 was £300 without any competition but the PS3 is £425 with two very competitive systems for much lower prices.

What you don't seem to understand is that the launch party was a fiasco cause almost everyone who wanted a PS3 had already preordered it but the sales are good
and 360 isn't doing very well in France only 500.000 unit sold so far

as far as I can remember Ireland used to own the most Playstations per capita compared to any other country but Japan, so I think it's safe to say the PS3 launch probably went off okay here

Considering what's going on in Japan right now, I don't think we can base anything off of anything at the moment.

I think you're onto something. The PS3 is definitely well on its way to being every bit as successful as the GameCube.

we will see on Monday... you are aware that Both Wii and 360 sold 350k in launch month, right?

Just putting things into perspective... People dont realize that Sony has had 3x more stock on day 1 than Wii and 360 had during launch period, total.
The Wii sold 700K. 350K was for the first week.

Is it normal in France that a shop opens after 10.30 on a weekday?

About the PS3 launch in Ireland:

From E.N.N (Ireland)

Some games specialists have been taking pre-orders for the PlayStation 3 since last year even though it is the most expensive console to go on sale in Ireland with a EUR630 price tag.

However, the queuing may not have been strictly necessary. A quick ENN survey of several city centre games shops in Dublin on Thursday found that the consoles were still in plentiful supply. One high-street retailer admitted that although it had taken some pre-orders for the machine, customers who made the trip to the store on Friday morning would more than likely walk out with a console.

Another music retailer carrying the consoles said it didn't have many PS3s but hadn't taken any pre-orders at all, and early birds would more than likely be able to get a console first thing on Friday morning. Yet another high-street chain store had only taken pre-orders for about a third of its PS3 stock allocation.

Games industry sources said the reason for this state of affairs -- apart from the hefty price tag, of course -- could possibly have been the lack of advertising compared with its predecessor, the PlayStation 2. Cryptic "This is living" ads have been running on some TV channels in Ireland to advertise the date of the launch, but in true PlayStation style, they fail to mention the name of the console or the manufacturer. The source said the ads for the PlayStation 2 were much more widespread, despite being equally puzzling.

The PS3, which was originally due to launch in Europe four months ago, is still expected to sell out in "record time". Only 20,000 of the machines were allocated to the Irish market by Sony.

I'm in France and I went to buy my PAL PS3 this morning at 11:45... I was pretty sure to get out of the store quickly but no... 100-200 people were waiting to buy it...

...OR NOT. :)

Without proof anyone can make shitty anecdotes like yours.
The PS3 is not as popular as the PS2 was and every single online french press is proving it.
Heck, you could even see the flop in direct on MTV France.

This is actually awesome, Sony told MTV to come, Microsoft used it :)
