RESIDENT EVIL 7 Review Thread

Dusk Golem

A 21st Century Rockefeller
Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Can't stand first person view so good luck to RE7, I will pass for now.

Hopefully the game is great and they get some money / motivation for other games. (DMC, other RE etc...)

Just hoping the 3rd person isn't gonna remain exclusive to revelations.

Nice.

Probably going to pick it up later with PSVR as I'll still be neck deep in Yakuza 0 and and GR2 for the foreseeable future.

But for now, happy that it's looking like a triumphant return for the series.

Is the review embargo also the livestream embargo?

If they knocked it out of the park I'll be so happy for them. A return to form, and perhaps one of the first full-length VR games. It would be great for Resident Evil to reclaim its position as one of the top gaming franchises.

I'm expecting it'll be in the 80-86 range, horror games have a hard time striking with everyone. It sounds like RE7 has some old-school mechanics in itself, and while I think some will fully appreciate and love that, others won't enjoy that as much.

Still stands a serious chance to be the best reviewed horror game this gen so far though, for comparison here are the top scoring horror games on Metacritic from this gen so far (that also have a lot of reviews, including from mainstream sites... I mention this since some indie games have higher scores but have been reviewed by less than a dozen outlets and not much mainstream attention, for example):

Evil Within - 75 metacritic
Until Dawn - 79 metacritic
Outlast - 80 metacritic
Alien Isolation - 81 metacritic
SOMA - 84 metacritic

Horror games have it rough due to how subjective they often are. But I do think RE7 stands a chance to be the best reviewed horror game of the generation. I fully expect we'll see more 9s, plenty of 8s, some 10s, as well as some 7s and 6s.

I have only played The Evil Within from those and it was heavily flawed so the 75 is about right.

Eh, all of the games listed have their fair share of shit. Scores are pretty fair, I'd say.

Horror games have been genuinely mediocre for a long time now.

I just hope this isn't a hide and seek simulator. Let me just kill my enemies and be done with them.

They're too scary lol. That's why I can never finish the SIREN games.

How's the madhouse run going? Thanks to you and Nemesis I did finally decide I'll play Normal first, then Madhouse since it sounds like they remix the game quite a bit.

If it was just more enemies, less item, and that sorta of stuff, I would have advised you to play it first, since you know your way around horror games.

But the mode changes key item locations, renders 1 puzzle useless, skips a cutscene that helps the story for me, doesn't reward you as much as normal for exploring, and even made a room useless that had a weapon since they removed it so you just go through all the trouble of unlocking it for nothing.

Easy is way too easy, Normal is where you should start for me.

Oh, and I'm stuck in a mini boss fight in Mad House mode. You can read about it in the spoiler thread if you want

Already preloaded and waiting for Steam to unlock it. And I will definetly try a speedrun right after my first playthrough. Game looks perfect for it with mouse controls etc.

I've been itching for another horror game since Alien: Isolation and The Evil Within. If the reviews and audience consensus is positive I'd love to pull the trigger on this.

First game I have pre-ordered in a long time. Very slightly bummed that my first playthrough will have to be on Xbox One (playing the demo there were some pretty bad IQ issues that I assume are absent on more powerful hardware) but I am beyond excited. RE is my favorite series and although I enjoyed the more action-oriented entries, I can't wait for what seems a return to what I fell in love with in the first place. Hopefully I will be able to play again on PSVR later in the year.

That Pure Playstation review....

After having my expectations lowered a little after reading some of the impressions from the other thread, I'm now in full hype mode again!

Traveling to Puerto Rico for two weeks tomorrow, so I won't be playing this for quite some time. Hopefully all/any PC bugs and performance issues will be dealt with by the time I get back.

My biggest complain about the game is the FP view but that's me because I just don't like it in general.

Good to see the impressions and the first reviews. It certainly looks like a departure from 6's reception.
