If you're looking to remotely control a DAW, make a bassline on a synth, put together some beats or mix together a bunch of tracks, chances are that the tool you need is
appstore.gif

Here's a few of my favourite apps to start, and later I'll try and go through the process of using some of these apps together to make a full tune, and if anyone else feels like adding their favourite apps into the thread it'd be greatly appreciated.

iElectribe

AirHarp

Air-Harp-Evolution-Press-2.jpg

So you're putting the finishing touches on your 18 minute epic prog folk tune and you can't find your harp. Game over, right? Wrong. It's Air Harp to the rescue! Air Harp re-imagines the classic lap harp for the iPad platform. Strum and pluck the strings.

There's a few options that allow you to input audio into your iPhone/iPad whilst monitoring the audio at the same time. I use the Amplitube iRig:

http://www.ikmultimedia.com/irig/features/

Also I believe Peavey and PRS have also released input hardware devices but I haven't tried them yet.

For example, here's the iMS-20 running into the iRig adaptor and then into the MultiTrack:

It's incredible how many quality offerings the iPad has for music production in half a year.

Before we know it tablets will be near mandatory for music production.

And holy shit at how cheap this prices are!

One question though. Can you actually create and edit sounds in Rebirth? I use to have Reason 3.0 on my computer but never messed around with Rebirth.

Great thread! Every time I see stuff like this I'm reminded of that ass clown Paul Thurrott who has his giant head so far up his own ass:

Paul Thurrott said:
When you go out and about with just an iPad, you’re sending a message that you’re not going to contribute. You’re just there to consume. This is why the iPad is, to my mind, uniquely unsuitable in the workplace.

Kind of, you can create and edit your own patches with the synth and drum machines, but you can't transfer audio files into it and edit those audio files.

I want the touchABLE, on my ipod touch =(

I'd recommend TouchOSC if you're using an iPod Touch instead of an iPad. You can design your own custom layouts and map them to whatever you want in Ableton which makes more effective use of the smaller screen.

I'm always pimpin' this in other threads, but nanostudio is a great DAW with awesome quality synth samples. It's got a triggerpad that comes preloaded with 808 and 909 drum machine samples as well as being fully programmable with your own samples as well.

How well does the iPad handle multitasking with this software?

Because with all of these VST's, ability to import sounds, and track editors, it's very possible to create music solely from the iPad.

It's just whether or not the iPad can handle it all.

Anybody?

SunVox

It's basically a tracker on your idevice. Comes with stock synths that are of the 8-bit nature. Also has sampling support. Import your own .wav files with the import tool (wi fi browser based thingy.)

Arpeggio, Portamento, Sampling loop points, Vibrato, all of that shiet.

You can craft the shape of each individual note that comes out of this. No pre-packaged loops or anything.

ITS KIND OF ADVANCED

It's also free on all other platforms (windows, linux, palm pilot, etc)

I think it can handle it pretty well. Damon Albarn is releasing a Gorillaz album that he created on an iPad during the US portion of the tour that just happened.

Looking at this thread is raising my hopes if Damon does release the new Gorillaz album next month.

not exactly music production, but related: sonorasaurus rex got updated today so that you don't have to sideload tracks via itunes, you can just use your ipad's ipod library. it's a really nice DJ app that i've used in actual clubs!

I just bought this on an impulse buy and I love it!! I've been playing for almost an hour now. I haven't tried any other DJ app, but the interface in this app is so easy to use it's impressive. It's really fast also (even if I had a few "low memory warnings") and even scratching is fun and doesn't sound too bad :) I haven't tried the option for splitting the output to speakers and personal monitor headphones (I need to get a stereo/mono splitter first) but that is also a great idea, and i don't think any other app has that. I can't wait to show it to my DJ friend, he's been asking me about DJ apps for iPad for a long time, I think this one will make him buy an iPad.

So now tried djay yet? There's been an update today, and it fixes the low memory problem. I've been playing with for a good half-hour (having with the Tron Legacy soundtrack) and it didn't crash not even once. They also added a few other improvements, but the crashes were the main problem and it's now fixed :)

Those last few app recommendations look awesome. I definitely want to check out Soundprism and djay.

I saw on the weekend that iMS-20 has been updated to allow MIDI in via the camera connection kit so I went out and grabbed the camera connection kit, but I didn't have a powered USB hub so couldn't test with my Remote SL. And then I noticed someone on eBay selling the MS-20 USB controller, and then I saw someone on Youtube controlling the iMS-20 with the MS-20 controller and I knew I had to have it.

So this is pretty crazy, I've got my iPad connected to the Audio Kontrol 1 midi in/out via the camera connection kit into into a usb hub one of those no-brand usb <-> midi cable adaptors. I'm using the External Instrument plugin in Ableton to send midi clips to the iMS-20 app on the iPad with the sound routed back out from the iMS-20 app, through the presonus tube preamp and then into Ableton, and I'm also controlling the iMS-20 app on the iPad with the MS-20 usb controller.

In other iPad audio news...

http://thenextweb.com/apple/2010/12/25/gorillaz-ipad-created-album-the-fall-available-now-for-free/

"The Fall," an album mixed and recorded by frontman Damon Albarn using the iPad, is available on the band's website (thefall.gorillaz.com) as of today (Dec. 25).

Over a dozen iPad apps were used to mix and record "The Fall," including Speak It!, SoundyThingie, Mugician, Funx Box, Gliss, AmpliTube and Xenon. The 15-track set also features Bobby Womack and was recorded over 32 days during the Gorillaz' 2010 tour stops between Montreal and Vancouver.

"The Fall" follows the March release of Gorillaz' last studio set, "Plastic Beach." In a recent interview, Albarn said he wanted to release the new album quickly to avoid arguments that its songs had been mixed or recorded outside of the iPad.

"I literally made it on the road in America over a month," he said. "If I left it until the New Year to release it, then the cynics out there would say, 'Oh well, it's been tampered with.' But if I put it out now, they'd know that I haven't done anything because I've been on tour ever since."

These may be silly questions as I know very little about producing actual high quality music, but as someone new to beatmaking and mixing.

1. Is the iPad a good replacement for beatmaking programs like FL Studio?

2. Would it be practical to learn basic producing/mixing skills on an iPad?

I'm considering getting an iPad sometime soon, and since it'd be mainly for entertainment, it'd be awesome if I could get into making hip hop beats for fun on it.

SOUNDSCOPE

The famous waveform-sculpting synthesizer finally available for iPad!

The latest generation of our Sound Scope synthesizer, with a completely rewritten audio engine, Kuzmoscillator™ modulator, echo, arpeggiator, more range, and higher resolution!

WAVEFORM EDITOR:

Use your finger to sculpt the oscillator waveforms! Try to draw a jagged shape for rich harmonics. Draw a smooth wave for smooth tones. Use a square shape to create hollow, flute-like sounds. Use the preset wave shape buttons as starting points for different timbres. The oscillators will morph to the preset shapes in time with the arpeggiator tempo.

New features: The flat lines silence each oscillator. The stair step lines turn on aliasing, for a harsher, more retro 8-bit sound.

PERFORMANCE AREA:

Simply touch the play area in the bottom third of the screen to play notes like you would on a keyboard. You can use a pinching motion on the ruler on either side of the screen to zoom into a particular pitch region for more precise control. Use two fingers to drag either ruler left or right to change the pitch region you are playing.

With the arpeggiator set to on, try using more than one finger on the central column; Space will step through all of the pitches you have pressed!

MODULATION AREAS:

Here you can change the arpeggiator and echo mode, and change their timing. With the arpeggiator on, you can use several fingers at once on the performance area, and Space will repeatedly step through these notes. With the arpeggiator turned off, you can play Space one note at a time like you would a keyboard.

The Kuzmoscillator™ modulator is an LFO control for pitch and volume. Drag across it horizontally, and you will cause the sound to go up and down in pitch. Drag vertically, and you will do the same to volume. The distance of your drag determines the AMOUNT of variation, while the speed of your drag determines the SPEED of variation.

CURTIS

The first granular synthesizer for the iPhone comes to the iPad!

Granular synthesis works by combining many tiny grains of sound from an existing recording, creating new sounds with the texture of the original, now with endless temporal possibilities. Play the sound forward, backward, or even at a single point!

Unlike scratching a record, pitch doesn't depend on how quickly you move through the recording. Try with spoken word, singing, synths. Mangle your recordings or create soft, gentle textures!

This release allows you to record audio with your iPad or add your own WAV files via iTunes. No more in-app server setup; just drag-and-drop!

IVOXEL

iVoxel is not only an amazingly sounding vocoder for iPhone/iPod and iPad - the unique concept of iVoxel turns this vocoder into a singing machine going far beyond the capabilities of traditional and software vocoders on any platform.

iVoxel lets you:

Speak or sing into your head set mic transforming your voice in a wide variety of ways.
Record words, syllables or other sounds into the voxel dictionary for later reuse.
Play different voxels live on the keyboard with ingenious pitch bending.
Arrange and play melodies with the built in sequencer and add the lyrics from a user expandable dictionary of voxels.
iVoxel is a combination of a voice optimized synthesizer and a vocoder with an unprecedented intelligibility. The vocoder part is based on the Matrix vocoder from VirSyn used by many famous artists - one of them the well known german group Kraftwerk. The channel filters used by iVoxel are based on the Sennheiser Vocoder VSM201 resulting in a rich and fat analogue sound characteristic.

Looks like power from the port might be a problem, so a powered USB hub or self powered devices would be best if you're using more than one.

Yep, my iMS-20 only works with the iPad over the powered hub, same with the Blue Yeti mic I've got on the way. There's a pic of my iMS-20/iPad setup a few posts up.

Here's a trippy little tune I made on the weekend using nothing but my iPad and iPhone.

1 track from iElectribe, 2 tracks from iMS-20, 1 track from Akai SynthStation and 1 track from iVoxel, all recorded into Multitrack DAW on the iPhone:

Looked like this when I was done:

I'm very simplistic here, but I am teaching myself to play simple piano runs and chords on the Virtuoso Piano app on the iPad. I've never learned piano before, so this is fun thing to do in addition to playing guitar.

synthstation49.jpg

If you’re an iPad-using, keyboard-playing musician, Akai has your dock. Their original SynthStation was a cute little accessory, but required playing a tiny keyboard (and iPhone-sized screen). The SynthStation49 looks more serious, with nine MPC-style pads, transport controls, and dedicated pitch and mod wheels. The iPad sits on what Akai describes as an adjustable “cradle,” so you can tilt it to whichever angle you want. That could mean tilting it up for reading notation or studio use, then down again for performance.
There’s also an internal audio interface with 1/4″ output jacks, so you don’t have to worry about taking up the dock connector or messing with the headphone jack. (Well, except you don’t get input, so vocoder fans will be disappointed.)
Most importantly, the hardware supports Core MIDI, so application developers don’t have to specifically support this particular accessory. And the keyboard doubles as a USB MIDI controller, so you could use this as a normal keyboard and dedicate the screen to, say, a fake book app to read music.
http://www.akaipro.com/synthstation49
With USB MIDI support via the Camera Connection Kit, this is far from your only option even from Akai, and a dedicated keyboard and stand might be just as practical. But it’s tough to beat on ergonomics. There’s only one caveat, really, which is that Akai notes this is awaiting Apple approval.

Songwriters, music producers and performers of all kinds will find that the StudioDock connects the iPad’s powerful processor, touch-screen interface and extensive library of apps to their collection of microphones, instruments, professional speaker and PA systems, MIDI controllers, sound modules, video projectors and much more.

With the StudioDock and an iPad, musicians and producers can record, perform, craft and create music in virtually any situation or location. Built to accommodate all current app-development standards including Core MIDI, the StudioDock is a universal device that bridges your choice of music-creation apps, instruments, and devices.

COMPLETE CONNECTIVITY
The StudioDock provides microphone and instrument users with two combination XLR and 1/4-inch inputs, each with its own gain control and switchable phantom power for condenser microphones. Guitarists and bassists will appreciate the StudioDock’s guitar-direct switch, enabling them to play, perform and record right into amplifier- and effects-modeling apps. Bands can connect outputs from their mixer and easily record their performances and rehearsals or use the StudioDock as a metronome or loop-playback device. Producers can use the StudioDock’s MIDI jacks to sequence external keyboards, samplers, drum machines and synthesizers, or perform using the StudioDock as the sound module and their favorite MIDI-compliant keyboard, drum pad or other controller. An assignable 1/4-inch footswitch input enables remote control of any app-defined function such as stop/start or record. Users can also connect the StudioDock to their Mac or PC using the USB port to send MIDI back and forth for creative, new applications of the iPad and computer used in tandem.

Users can connect the StudioDock’s stereo pair of 1/4-inch main outputs to studio monitors for critical listening, or to PA systems for use in performance settings. They can monitor on headphones, and independently control the levels of the two outputs, each on its own knob. Recording musicians will appreciate the StudioDock’s direct-monitor switch, which enables them to toggle between the incoming and playback signal on their headphones. Rounding out the StudioDock’s output section is a composite video connector, enabling users to employ the StudioDock as a source for video projection behind bands on stage, or for connection to most televisions and computer monitors.

RUGGED RELIABILITY
The StudioDock was built for the real world. Whether you're keeping it in the safety of the studio or taking it out for recording or performance use in the club or on tour, the StudioDock will not only deliver the connectivity you need for audio applications, but it also serves as a rugged, protective case for the iPad. The StudioDock completely houses the iPad on the bottom and three side surfaces. It also encases the iPad's screen in a protective bezel on three of its four edges, further shielding the mobile computing device from the potential for damage in punishing environments.

The applications of the iPad for music creation, production, and performance are limited only by your creativity. As an imaginative, cutting-edge music maker, the StudioDock empowers you to seamlessly connect the world of pro audio gear and instruments to the iPad and the massive collection of apps.

Nice one monchi, I'll be grabbing one of those Alessis Sound Docks for sure if I can still use my Blue Yeti USB mic and iMS-20 controllers with it at the same time.

I sure hope Alesis is aware of the next iPad's dimensions. That would be a real shame if it won't fit in the StudioDock.

Given that NAMM just started, I expect a ton of more stuff to show up in the next few days. Should be awesome.

It'll be interesting to see if any Android stuff shows up now that 2011 will see a gazillion tablets hit. Maybe even a port to WP7 for something?

I absolutely love Sylo Synth. It's something like $4 and you can record anything and twist it into any sort of shape you want. Great for both fucking around and making a freaky sample. There's a demo version available to play around with.

I also have iElectribe, MDP SAS-1, and a crap load of specialty instruments like the Air Harp (which is a great deal considering how much they've added and improved since it first came out).
