2K Games/Take 2’s ‘Bioshock 2’ only survives for one week at the top of the All Formats Chart, usurped by a more modern-themed FPS from Sega in the form of ‘Aliens Vs Predator’. It is over 10 years since the original AvP was launched, but UK developer ‘Rebellion’ who worked on the original, can now claim the fastest selling game so far in 2010.

Sales of 2010’s previous fastest selling game, ‘Bioshock 2’ (on the same formats as AvP – Xbox 360, PS3 and PC) drop 71% putting it down two places to No3, behind ‘Just Dance’ which holds on to No2 with a sales increase of 55% thanks to strong half-term interest. The year may only have just begun, but we already have No1s from 5 different publishers. There is more half-term success in the form of ‘New Super Mario Bros. Wii’ (+59%) which rises 2 places to No4, while sales of both ‘FIFA 10’ (-7%) and ‘Modern Warfare 2’ (+4%) are reasonably static, leaving them down 2 places to No’s 5 and 6 respectively.

Perhaps also because of the Winter Olympics, Sega’s ‘Mario & Sonic at the Olympic Winter Games’ (+76%) slaloms back into the Top 10, up 3 places to No8. Nintendo remain well represented in the Top 10 thanks to top sellers ‘Wii Sports Resort’ (+25%) at No7 and ‘Wii Fit Plus’ (+11%) at No9. The Top 10 is rounded off by EA’s ‘Army of Two: The 40th Day’ (+13%) which sneaks back into the Top 10 at No10, keeping the Winter-Olympic boosted ‘Vancouver 2010’ (+274%) out of the Top 10, as it breaks into the Top 40 for the first time at No11.

I cant believe that Just Dance might actually see a slow week happen where it hits number one for that week.
So fucking random.

Heh - good to see Spirit Tracks back in the charts. For anyone outside of the UK, it's worth noting why I think that ST has re-charted as I found it quite fascinating.

When ST launched, the ads were fairly frequently aired, mainly on kids channels. The ads were typical Zelda fare - rousing music, gameplay clips and aimed squarely at gamers. They ran for a while, but over the past few weeks they have been replaced by a new ad campaign.

This one features a woman curled up on her sofa as with other "expanded audience" ads(lifestyle-type presentation, calm, straightforward voiceover etc.) playing her DS and getting stuck on a puzzle. The voiceover links the puzzle-solving to Professor Layton and talks about helping Link on his adventure, referring to the game as (IIRC) a puzzle adventure.

It's a really interesting technique, as it completely avoids what most gamers would put into an ad for a game like Zelda and positions the game in a way I doubt most people here would consider if they were asked to promote the title.

I've seen two ads in that vein.

I find the namedropping really funny - I would love to see what happens when the expanded audience reaches the endgame.

AVP sold faster than Bioshock 2, and therefore Mass Effect 2, what the hell :lol
People are starting to realize that metacritic works in the contrary direction:D
On a serious note, it's on three platforms and it's a pretty well known series.. But yeah, still suprising considering it is being published by SegaxD

What does 'fastest selling" mean anyhow? Reaching X ammount of copies sold during that week? Outselling the overall copies Bioshock2\ME2 sold since their release?

It sold more in its first week than either ME2 or Bioshock2.

The US commercials at the very least are amazing looking, even if it's PC footage it really captures the sights/sounds of the movies and makes the game look really frantic. Same for the campaign-specific launch trailers. They also specifically mention that it's a multiplayer title.

Crazy upset by Sega over Take 2 and EA.

when was the last time sega had a game that reached number one (that wasn't an olympic title)?

Funny how reliable France is.
I mean the rest may come and go but you'll be damned if there's no Mario and Wii____ games.
Heck if we had more than 5 games I'd bet good money that not far there's Mario Kart and Wii sport resort :lol

Surprising how reliable Just dance is also, Ubisoft must think they've hit gold with that one and I'd bet a gazillion virtual buck that they don't have a clue why

Bayonetta hanging in there. Did it have a price drop?

You can buy it for £18 from Zavvi... which counts towards the charts. Also, that is just €22 for people buying outside of UK, and still counts towards the charts.

I'm surprised by the drop of Mass Effect 2, since the price of the game already dropped in a couple of online retailers.

Clearly reviews only matter to the "message boards" crowd.

GI.biz have the platform break down for AvP, I can't see it in the Chart Track comments in the OP:

According to data from GfK Chart-Track the multiformat game has become the fastest-selling title of the year, with 58 per cent of sales on the Xbox 360, 32 per cent on the PlayStation 3 and nine per cent on PC.

I'm pretty sure they're aware of their own secret buy-this-first-party-game indoctrination trials.

I'm down on the bet, seeing how they fucking want to milk it to death, it's pretty much a dead give away they don't know why it succeed.

We'll see anyway when the sequels will bomb

I think it's a case of reviewers not seeing the point of the game, and letting their biases show a little.

Just read a Eurogamer review, and it concludes "the multiplayer was great fun but..."

but what? Isn't that what most people are buying FPS for nowadays?

Do they really think people are going to be put off by spotty AI and the occassional muddy texture in the SP? After everyone just gave 10's to Modern Warfare 2?

And they actually put "no iron-sights aiming" as if this was a bad thing. Halo anyone? Left 4 Dead? Bioshock? Gears? FEAR? I think the review community may have overthought this one a little bit.

lowrider007

Licorice-flavoured booze?
With regards to the ME2 drop I really think it's that's it's just a simple case that not everyone loves Bioware role-playing type games, I myself included, I'm sure the game is amazing but it doesn't matter how many awesome reviews it gets it's not my cup of tea.

Nice week, but very surprise AvP more than Bioshock 2 and Mass Effect 2 on their first week.

But I'm might get it why because Alien and Predator are well known and it is a pure FPS game.

Forza 3, amazing legs !!!

Hows the online playing community?

The most populated racing game I've played this gen was F1 Championship Edition, the last time I fired up the online mode it still had about 300 active players 3 years after launch. It had more players than some of the newer racing games. :lol

I saw Forza 3 at half price (£9.99) in town yesterday. I'll probably pick it up at weekend.

AvP was going to be a flop??? Gawd damn, Sega must be happy.

Not sure why it sold well initially, but did any other UKers see the ad for it during Predator on Channel 4 last night? Was well over a minute long and took up most of the ad break. If that doesn't sell even more people on it, nothing will! :p

It is going to be like any other socom game. The people who are into those already bought it day 1 and will play it forever until the next one comes out and they move on.

No, more like:

Hooray, now they get a financial hit with AvP, showing them that a higher quality game will sell better.

AvP is a much better game than Rogue Warrior and Shellshock 2...
